Having had 40063 on he first leg of my journey out of Glasgow I wondered what would take the train forward from Perth. This is where the Edinburgh and Glasgow portions joined, with Edinburgh loco booked to take the train forward to Inverness. There was a very big risk that it could be a Class 47 but today 40184 performed the duty. Onto Inverness and a string of 26s only interrupted by an unwanted but required 47 heading “The Clansman”. After taking my seventh 26 of the day, unexpectedly on an Aberdeen service, I headed back to Edinburgh to cover the overnight services south.

A bank holiday so I took the opportunity to cover the Mondays Only 0055 Man Vic to York. It was meant to be a good bet for a class 40 but whenever I took this train it was either a 45 or 47. It was booked an engine change at Leeds and I always had more joy with this, today being no exception in the shape of a non boilered 31.

Day 3 All Line Rover
Having taken a Deltic hauled sleeper to Edinburgh I headed over to Glasgow to cover the Dundee and Aberdeen services. I found that some days in Scotland everything dropped into place and then others fell flat. This was a flat day! After picking up only one new 27 and with class 47s being in abundance I decided to head for the safe haven of the West Highland Line. I headed out to Tyndrum with a required 37 and on my return to Glasgow I had two options open to me. Option 1 was to stay on the train that I had just arrived into Queen St. It included sleeping and seating accommodation and would be routed out to Mossend Yard before it was attached to the Inverness-Euston service. The only problem with this choice was that the train could often be very busy. The alternative option was to take a diesel unit out to Larbert and pick up the Perth-Euston which was a fairly quiet service. I chose the second option but the question would be, which was the best choice?
