A day's spotting under the wires. I even have a list of what I saw that day. 82006 being a highlight.

I will post my lists once I get back home. (I am enjoying that curious Scottish drizzle in Mallaig right now).

Well 37518 was doing most of the work on the back, with 45407 providing scenic clouds of steam and not much traction on the front. For the run back from Mallaig the kettle is piloting (=being pushed by) the 37. As there are no steam heat pipes on the 37, it'll be a chilly trip.
Annoyingly the afternoon trip looks like being 57001 + 45231, both required.

Didn't record what I travelled on to and from Kidderminster (or have lost the records) but did enjoy Ivatt Mogul 46443 for a round trip to Bridgnorth on the SVR. And scored D1062 for sight...

3/5/99
A trip to Doncaster and back:
158908 Rochdale to Leeds
90027 Leeds to Doncaster
321903 Doncaster to Leeds
158903 Leeds to Rochdale

From memory I think some sort of farce may have developed on the ECML, hence my catching the 321!

3/5/2000
142033 and 155341 commuting to and from Manchester.

3/5/2001
155343, commuting.

3/5/2009
142058 Castleton to Manchester V, with 158872 returning me home.

37518 thrashed just as well on the return. Other kettle was 45212 - my dodgy memory.
The trains cross at Arisaig, but you can't be sure of a train to train leap there, as it is a foot crossing at the Mallaig end of the platform. You would need to be on the first train to arrive and have time to make the crossing before the second train arrives (and blocks the crossing). Thanks to the diesel power, trains run early.

Interesting one would be 158752 to 158758 on the 0619 warrington Central to Manchester oxford road service all stops. Before it formed the 0717 Manchester oxford road to llanduno Junction service. Just after the Manchester Victoria to llanduno Junction service ended and started from both Manchester oxford road and Piccadilly respectively around 1994 to 1996.
Also remember was very rare it did happen very occasionally but had 158747 and 158749 on hire to regional railways north west from cross country covering this early morning commuter service. Prior to returning to a pacer and yes first class was declassified.

Sounds like a splendid trip out. I'm just quietly astonished that 47478 made it all the way there and back. It was a right old bag of spanners. I imagine it was a decent sized train, so everything north/west of Missed would have been slow and noisy (just how I like it!)

It was 12 coaches as far as I can remember. Pretty good going up the West Highland line with that kind of load. 47478 did a cracking job getting us to Carlisle and back - timed it doing 96 down Stoke bank on the way back.

Presumably not all 12 went to Mallaig with a single black 5 though?

No, at Mallaig we swapped sets and had the West Highland green and cream set with the Black Five while the main train was serviced at Fort William. Load was 7 coaches

47478 with its silver roof was always a good one. ;)

47460 1816 York – Selby
47525 1852 Selby – York
An evening Deltic bash, or so I thought at the time. 47525 had a reputation for being very fast indeed, but it was still a disappointing evening.

Saturday 03/05/80
82008 0125 Crewe – Carlisle (off 81005 Euston – Rugby, 85005 Rugby – Crewe the previous evening, so a fine roaring overnight with three different classes).
86036 0353 Carlisle – Carstairs
26027 0643 Carstairs – Edinburgh
40159 0840 Edinburgh – Grange over Sands
40159 1740 Grange over Sands – Edinburgh
40169 2230 Edinburgh Waverley – Falkirk SRPS Yard
The SRPS were running a trip from Burntisland to Grange over Sands, with stock that included a Gresley buffet car and an Observation saloon. The route was via Beattock, Shap, and Morecambe (run round), with 40159 providing the entertainment. The train was limited to 70 mph, but despite that we were let out right in front of a Glasgow – Euston 87-hauled express at Carstairs! When we turned off at Carnforth there was a queue of electrically hauled passenger services on the Up line behind us, including the Royal Scot. On the return trip we negotiated (for a limited period) entry into the observation saloon at the front of the train, and sat at the very front right behind 40159 as it slogged up Beattock. At Edinburgh another treat awaited us in the shape of 40169 and some sociable Grangemouth drivers, who gave us a footplate ride over the Forth Bridge to Inverkeithing. We carried on round the Fife Circle, Dalmeny, Winchburgh to Larbert, where the 40 ran round, and then through to the SRPS Yard at Falkirk Grahamston. There – with thanks to the SRPS volunteer staff - we dossed the night in the stock – specifically in LFK Sc14901.

Saturday 03/05/82
47030 1817 Plymouth – Paddington. This was a relief train, and I was hoping for something a little more interesting than this dud duff.

Tuesday 03/05/83
Having alighted from 40057 at Grantham, I was obviously hoping for something big on the 2300 Kings Cross – Aberdeen via Leeds …
47018 0054 Grantham – Leeds – another dud duff.
40086 0300 Leeds – Hull
DMU Hull – Scarborough
45103 0745 Scarborough – York
I can only assume I knew the 40 was allocated to the 0300 Leeds – Hull. I needed the track for a 40, so it had to be done. (This was another of those wonderful trains which used to run conveying newspapers and mail overnight, long since gone).

(Friday 02/05/86)
47714 2330 Glasgow QS – Perth
Saturday 03/05/86
47430 0110 Perth – Inverness
37262 + 37419 0635 Inverness – Rogart
37414 + 37421 0808 Rogart – Inverness
37420 1055 Inverness = Kyle
37420 1710 Kyle – Inverness

Tuesday 03/05/88
43125 + 43005 0935 Plymouth – Bristol TM
47556 1200 Bristol TM – Newport
DMU Newport – Abergavenny
47483 1341 Abergavenny – Shrewsbury
47573 1531 Shrewsbury – Wolverhampton
85011 1624 Wolverhampton – Birmingham NS
86225 1648 Birmingham NS – Stratford
DLR Stratford – Poplar – West India Dock – Tower Gateway – West India Dock – Stratford
EMU Stratford – Liverpool St
86220 2130 Liverpool St – Stowmarket
309 604 2327 Stowmarket – Liverpool St
A day full of cans and duffs, with a selection of units thrown in for good measure. This was my first run across the North London Line electrically hauled throughout, and my first trips on the DLR. I thought (wrongly) the move back from Stowmarket was booked to be hauled, so I wasn’t best pleased when a 309 turned up on it.

Sunday 03/05/92
47840 1029 Reading – Derby
3440 “City of Truro” 1350 Derby – Paddington
47423 2020 Paddington – Reading
This one-way tour with City of Truro ran via Saltley, Solihull and High Wycombe. It managed a pretty fair turn of speed, and as far as I know it hasn’t done another main line run ever since.

Saturday 03/05/97
43013 + 43088 1705 Reading – Coventry, via Acton Main Line, Acton Canal Wharf, WCML
321 416 Coventry – Rugby
90007 2021 Rugby – Euston
43190 + 43174 2230 Paddington – Reading
A little evening bash to do some rare track for an HST, diverted due to engineering work.

Finally some more edited highlights of the 1994 German bash:
Tuesday 03/05/94
03 1010 Erfurt – Leipzig
01 1531 Leipzig – Arnstadt
44 1093 Arnstadt – Meiningen & return
Plus 5 x 232s, 1 x 228, 1 x 155, 4 x 143, 1 x 109, and 1 x 216.

45118 1652 Harrogate – Leeds
55013 1730 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
DMU Wakefield Westgate – Leeds
46041 1906 Leeds – York
40074 1925 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – York
The 1652 Harrogate – Kings Cross was usually a 31/4, although it went over to HST not long after. This was the only occasion I saw a 45/1 on it. It re-engined at Leeds to 55013, so I did a round trip to Wakefield before heading home to York. Then at York 40074 put in an appearance, so I couldn’t refuse that.

Friday 04/05/79 – Saturday 05/05/79
47425 1710 York – Leeds. Very poor loco, lost 10 minutes, 73 mph max speed.
40070 1805 Leeds – Carlisle via Mirfield, Hebden Bridge, Copy Pit, Preston, Shap.
(Sat)
40077 0145 Carlisle – York via Newcastle.
There had been a spectacular 41 wagon freight train derailment at Settle Junction, including some explosives, so it was taking a while to reopen the route. I knew the Nottingham – Carlisle train would be diverted, but I wasn’t entirely sure where, or whether or not it would get a 40. This was my first run of any sort via Copy Pit. A cracking evening out.
On arrival at Carlisle I had to get back to York – which with the Penmanshiel Tunnel collapse was relatively easy, as all the “East Coast” overnights were running via Carlisle. For reasons unrecorded the 2250 from Edinburgh (1925 ex Aberdeen) to Kings Cross was running very late, so they put on a relief with 40077. That’ll do nicely.

Sunday 04/05/80
Emerging from my doss in the stock at the SRPS depot at Falkirk, I headed off to Queen Street to see what I could discover. (The TOPS office at Queen Street was readily accessible and the staff were always good for a chat, and passing on the gen as to what was out).
47703 0759 Falkirk Grahamston – Glasgow QS
47197 0850 Glasgow QS – Dundee
27044 banker to Cowlairs
40063 1113 Dundee – Glasgow QS
81008 1515 Glasgow Central – Motherwell, EMU return.
40063 1645 Glasgow QS – Montrose
27042 banker to Cowlairs
40032 2016 Montrose – Edinburgh
I assume that whatever re-engined this train was not to my taste, as I headed off onto the West Coast once more …
47461 2345 Edinburgh – Carstairs

Monday 04/05/81
50022 + 50024 0030 Plymouth – Bristiol Temple Meads via Westbury, Bath Spa.
50009 0335 Bristol Temple Meads – Paddington – also via Bath Spa.

Saturday 04/05/85
27045 2330 Glasgow QS – Perth

Monday 04/05/87
47707 0730 Glasgow QS – Polmont
47380 0803 Polmont – Glasgow QS
154 001 0903 Glasgow QS – Aberdeen, 1343 return.
37408 1650 Glasgow QS – Bridge of Orchy
37406 1911 Bridge of Orchy – Glasgow QS
Straight off a night shift, onto a move to score 47380, then a run with the experimental prototype 154 unit. We recorded a maximum speed of 97 mph on the return journey. A fill in with 37/4s, then back to work another night shift (Yawn …)

Wednesday 04/05/88
Across to London Bridge to cover the various newspaper trains departing from there. I was hoping for a 73/0, which were occasional performers, but no such luck.
73107 0330 London Bridge – Dover Western Docks via Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Folkestone.
EMUs back to Waterloo East.
73136 0932 Waterloo – Bournemouth
Reached Southampton Parkway in 57 minutes – a fine run.
33117 1116 Bournemouth – Weymouth, 1228 return
73212 1339 Bournemouth – Southampton
73140 1417 Southampton – Brockenhurst
EMU 1214 Brockenhurst – Lymington Pier and return
73129 1521 Brockenhurst – Southampton
73209 1642 Southampton – Bournemouth
33108 1746 Bournemouth – Weymouth
33117 1902 Weymouth – Bournemouth
73126 2004 Bournemouth – Waterloo
33114 2252 Waterloo – Southampton

Friday 04/05/90
90012 1200 Euston - Manchester Picc
31463 1645 Manchester Vic – Preston
87006 1645 Preston – Crewe
90017 1754 Crewe – Birmingham NS
47478 2111 Birmingham NS – Reading
I think this was a work-related outing, with some bashing thrown in later for good measure. 47478 was one of my most hated Duffs!

Saturday 04/05/91
Unusual for me – a day out on a diesel railtour…
47810 0041 Reading – Bristol TM
50015 + 50008 0337 Bristol TM – Penzance
Ran in top-and-tail mode from Plymouth, with 50008 leading. Visited Carne Point and Drinnick Mill. 50015 detached from the rear at Par, but 50008 then stalled at MP 284.5, so 50015 was sent for and reattached to assist through to Penzance.
50008 + 50015 1119 Penzance – Bristol TM, + 37673 1322 Par – Bugle.
50s ran in tandem to Par, where 37673 attached to the rear. Reversed, so 37 leading to Bugle with 50s assisting in rear, then reversed again and proceeded to Goonbarrow Jn with 37 idling on rear. 37 detached there, and 50s continued through to Bristol TM.
47972 1839 Bristol TM – Worcester Shrub Hill
HST Worcester – Hereford.

Finally the 1994 German (primarily steam) bash featured 03 2001, 41 1185, 01 1531 and 50 3688, in addition to 3 class 232s, 2 class 219, 1 class 228, 1 class 202, and a sprinkling of electric locos

That SRPS tour was pretty cool.
Yes, they were (and remain) a very hospitable bunch of people. It wasn't the last occasion on which I made a last minute appearance on one of their tours ...

Nothing as exciting as CW2 to report:

4th May 1985:

47426 Newcastle - Durham 1M73
Beer
45113 Durham - Newcastle 1E08

There was a barmaid in one of the Durham pubs who several of the lads found somewhat attractive. One day she appeared on the platform at Durham for the train we were catching back to the Toon - with a boyfriend in tow. Withered.

4th May 1992:

West Midlands Travelcard action:

87028 New St - Wolves - Cov
87027 Cov - Wolves - Cov
87022 Cov - Wolves
86236 Wolves - New St
87028 New St - Cov
86231 Cov - New St

4th May 1993:

A work trip to that London:

86248 New St - Euston
86242 Euston - New St

Very poor. But free.

It gets better tomorrow...

Plenty there to keep me entertained.

In 1994 the various Plandampf events in Germany were still in full swing. I spent the day variously bashing class 232 diesels, new track, and steam locos. The steam involved was 41 1185, 01 1531, 03 2001, and 38 1182. The undoubted highlight of the day was a D train powered by double-headed Pacifics 03 2001 + 01 1531. The train was late away from Arnstadt because of the unscheduled loco change, but the climb up the hill to Oberhof was utterly unforgettable. Both locos were worked flat out, with the crews seemingly competing with each other as to which loco could create the most noise and the fiercest exhaust. Just simply brilliant.

EMU Helensburgh Central - Dumbarton Central
5352 Dumbarton Central - Fort William (ADEX)
5350+5352 Fort William - Dumbarton Central (RETURN ADEX)
EMU Dumbarton Central - Helensburgh Central

5352, which was not in the best of health to start with, was overloaded with 9 mark 1 coaches and - on a typically dreich, damp West of Scotland morning - took several attempts to climb the bank from Craigendoran to Helensburgh Upper. At one stage we had to reverse down into the old WHL loop at Craigendoran (clear of the electric line and without overhanging trees) in order to have another run at it. Eventual arrival in Fort William was about one hour late, so we only had two hours in which to enjoy the torrential rain instead of three. My friends and I did however make the trek out to the newly-opened Tom na Faire depot and - although we were declined permission to go round (which never happened at the old depot!) - we could see everything from the adjacent hilltop monument. Luckily 5350 was spare, so she was coupled-up to her bad sister for the return journey, which was happily incident-free.

Locos seen or passed on the outward journey were: 5382, 5348,5379 and 5415.
Fort William depot contained: 5376, 5381, 5350, 5390 and 8100.
The only loco seen on the return journey was 5353.

A single 27 on the WHL on load 9! Madness. I'm surprised it got there at all. Excellent memories.
