Our prebooked stay at Saalfeld was at an end, but Ken and I agreed to prolong our stay in the DDR to visit some of the steam worked narrow-gauge lines in the north of the country. We made the necessary prepaid hotel reservations (on which the extension of our visa validity depended), packed our bags, and headed north.

At last, one of Saalfeld’s class 01 Pacifics came out to play. 01 0519 worked the 1317 Saalfeld – Leipzig as far as Camburg. Ken established that after turning the 01 would work back from Camburg on the 1608 Leipzig – Saalfeld, so we planned a bash around taking that as far as we could before returning north for our overnight from Leipzig to Stralsund, where we had booked more hotel accommodation. We did DR 119 023 the short distance under the wires to Grossherringen for DR 242 115 to Naumberg to pick up DR 242 050 on the 1608 Leipzig – Saalfeld which re-engined to 01 519 as booked at Camburg. Sadly, time was against us, so we couldn’t take it all the way back to Saalfeld, instead alighting at Jena Paradies for DR 110 638 to Camburg, replaced there by DR 242 050 for the run to Leipzig. The stock on this train was 3-axle coaches, and the sliding door in our coach was wedged open, causing a sub-zero gale to howl through the coach!

(Thankfully Saalfeld’s 01 519 was saved from the cutter’s torch, and I was able to travel with it once more in 2016 on a special from Nurnberg to Singen).

Leipzig station. Wow! Definitely the most impressive so far. It was enormous, and brilliant. It still holds a special place in my heart. At Leipzig we had time for some food in the station restaurant before joining our overnight, D710 2241 Leipzig – Binz via Berlin. This got DR 250 085 on the front via Halle and Bitterfeld to Berlin Schoneweide, where it was replaced by DR 132 344 for the long snowy howling overnight run to Stralsund.

I was heading up to London to cover the overnight services to Scotland. I had just enough time to take Deltic 12 to Darlington to intercept a southbound relief. Unfortunately it was not the hoped for Deltic, however I soon picked up Deltic 18 from Doncaster. Deltic 22 was already attached to its train when I arrived into KX; next stop Edinburgh!

Rumour had it that Deltic 9 would re-engine the 2035 Aberdeen-KX (1E43) at York. It seemed a little strange to me because although I knew it was scheduled to work a railtour on the Wednesday, I thought it would be sent later to London on the 0807 York-KX. I waited patiently in the buffet watching all of the overnight trains depart without a Deltic. 1E43 was scheduled to depart around 0330 so just after three I wandered out of the buffet and up to the end of the platform in the hope of hearing a Deltic. Nothing! Nothing could be heard so I returned to the buffet thinking of my bed that I was missing. 1E43’s arrival was announced over the public address and with that Deltic 9 appeared from the depot. I dashed out of the buffet and over the footbridge as 1E43 pulled into York. No 9 replaced a class 47 and I was happily on my way to London. Deltic 7 had been allocated to the 0940 to York and with its return working to KX expected, the outlook for the day was good. No 7 was soon in trouble as it lost an engine at Hadley Wood and at York as had happened the previous day it was despatched to York depot for repairs. That was my final haulage with Pinza. It did return briefly a couple of days later when it worked its last service, the 0807 York-KX, however it failed before it reached Doncaster. With No 7 out of service the day wasn’t looking that optimistic but Deltic 21 seemed to appear out of nowhere working a relief service to KX. It had managed to reach Edinburgh after it re-engined a northbound overnight service at Newcastle. Although No 21 was restricted to one power unit it seemed to perform faultlessly in its last days of service. I was able to take it to Peterborough where I caught up again with Deltic 9. My final run with Alycidon into “The Cross” had ended a very good day.

For reasons unknown – possibly weather related – D710 was diverted off its booked route, and ran via Angermunde, Prenzlau, then Neubrandenburg. This caused some delay, so to regain time the train omitted Stralsund Hbf and took the avoiding line to serve Stralsund Rugendamm instead. That regained all the time lost by the diversion. DR 110 527 soon arrived to shuttle us back to Stralsund Hbf. Thankfully we were able to check into our hotel early and get some much-needed sleep after the long and eventful overnight, before regrouping again in the afternoon to visit our first narrow-gauge target.

DR 110 221 did the 1548 Stralsund to Bergen, where DR 110 129 was waiting with the 1703 Bergen to Lauterbach. That ran round at Lauterbach and we took it the few clicks back to Putbus for 99 4802 on the 1800 Putbus – Gohren. Yes, working narrow-gauge steam on a proper train at proper fares, not a tourist trap. The 99 did very well and ran around at Gohren to form the 1930 back to Putbus. We alighted at Binz Ost to trudge through the snow-covered streets to reach the “main” station in Binz, which even had a station buffet. After enjoying a pleasant beer there, we joined DR 110 391 on the 2154 Binz – Stralsund. Some interesting branch lines covered, and my first DR narrow-gauge steam as well.

I arrived into Edinburgh just after 0400 with Deltic 22, rather than fill some time by taking 0435 to Glasgow I decided to wait around hoping that a Deltic might work to Aberdeen. The prospect of this was fairly good as the first four overnight services from KX arrived with Class 55s. Shortly before 0700 Deltic 6 arrived from Craigentinny hauling a single Buffet Car. This meant that it would re-engine the 2315 KX-Aberdeen which was unusual in the fact that as an overnight service it carried a Buffet Car for part of its service. For me this was the first of several visits to Aberdeen with a Deltic.

Having arrived into KX around 2300 I along with many others were hoping that Deltic 21 would be turned out on the 0005 to Newcastle but it wasn’t. It ended up being turned out to work the 0100 Newcastle (Sleeper Only). This was a bonus providing there were spare berths because No 21 plus the front two sleeping cars would be attached to the 0705 Newcastle-Edinburgh. I along with many others managed to get a berth in the Edinburgh portion. In fact there were that many bashers there that some could only get a berth in the Newcastle portion. Having arrived into Edinburgh around 0900 there was little prospect of quickly returning south. Deltic 8 was readying itself to work to Carstairs and I was contemplating following it. However, Deltic 21 after going to Haymarket for fuel made a rapid turnaround and worked out of Edinburgh on a relief service to KX. I then repeated my same move as the previous day taking No 21 to Peterborough and then travelling on the 1603 KX-York, followed by the 2019 York-KX with Deltic 17. Had No 17 arrived into London on time (it was 25 down) I would have been able to take Deltic 9 to Edinburgh on the 2315 KX-AB. The first bit of bad luck since Christmas.

This was more of a beer trip than a bashing one, however I wanted to travel out of Fishguard Harbour, with the track being required. Back in the Eighties the service in West Wales relied on bus connections to Fishguard and after having a Crompton into Milford Haven I took the bus from Haverfordwest directly to Fishguard town centre. I was travelling with a friend and we imbibed several lunchtime beers before deciding to head to the station. I think that we had left ourselves about 20 minutes to get there and on the way asked directions from an old lady who advised that it was just down the hill. As I walked down the hill I saw a ferry in the distance across the bay and initially thought that it must be berthed out of service. As I continued downhill I realised that the ferry was in fact in service and berthed alongside the station. We now had about 5 minutes to get to the station about a mile away. Knowing that if we missed the train the next one wasn’t due until the evening. The prospect of waiting or having to depart Fishguard by bus forced me into a unwanted sprint. I left my drinking companion who thought there was no chance of making the train. With several beers juggling about in my stomach I managed to reach the station only to find an empty station. My friend was able to amble up to the station as 33027 arrived on the late incoming service. Anyway I was rewarded with a new Crompton out of Fishguard.

A fine set of high mileage Deltic moves.
Personally, I would have been more tempted by Deltic 8 to Carstairs, as getting a Deltic on the Carstairs portion workings was comparatively rare.

A service train with a Deltic coming off for an AC loco forward would have been exceedingly rare too. Maybe the odd York-Shrewsbury might have done the same?

With the York - Shrewsbury it was a regular swap to AC at Stockport and several Deltics did that in their latter years. Carstairs is the only other place I can think of where service trains were involved.

Even including railtours other locations would have been very unusual, though I recollect one time at Carnforth (away from my records but memory suggests 55003?) when a Class 84 was involved.

EDIT just dredged my records and it was 55003 for 84003. 23/07/78. That train was officially an Adex from Chesterfield but certainly it was organised more like a railtour.

Deltics to Carstairs were not that rare, it was just being in the right place at the right time (usual story). I only managed to get one Deltic into the station. I was tempted to take No 8 but it was a little problematic with it being restricted to EH only. Getting south out of Edinburgh with it would be difficult especially after returning from Carstairs it then worked on the 1455 to Aberdeen. It then returned to Edinburgh on the 1823 service, meaning that it could only work one southbound service, the 2115 Aberdeen-KX Sleeper (It was the only dual heat set of overnight stock).
I believe there was only one Deltic basher who did this move; No 8 was his machine. At the time he was a young BR Management Graduate who would later hold senior positions with both Virgin Trains and Network Rail.

Ah yes, I get your drift.
My first Deltic into Carstairs station was a failed frozen 55006 being propelled by 81006. I only ever had one other Deltic on a bona fide portion working. (All explained in detail much earlier in this thread).

It was an early start from Stralsund this morning as we headed off to Rostock to see if we could locate any sign of active standard gauge steam. DR 110 691 took us on the 0636 to Rostock. We didn’t have any luck with steam at Rostock, so we proceeded with our original plan to cover the narrow-gauge line at Bad Doberan. First we had to reach Wismar. The incoming train arrived behind DR 112 437 then reversed at Rostock and the loco we had just arrived with from Stralsund, DR 110 691, took over. I wasn’t best pleased by that move until we departed Rostock and discovered DR 112 437 was still attached to the rear, pushing mightily, so we ran in top-and-tail coathanger mode to Wismar. From there DR 112 326 took us forward to Bad Doberan.

The Bad Doberan to Osteebad Kuhlungsborn West narrow-gauge line, nowadays known as the “Molli”, just about blew my mind. Here was a steam train in normal passenger service running through a medieval town centre and along the streets just like a bus or a tram. 99 2323 took us on the 1319 from Bad Doberan and 1432 return. It was like entering an East German time vortex, where steam trains and ancient buildings were the new “normal”.

From Bad Doberan we dropped onto DR 112 437 (again!) back to Rostock, where we hung around for another couple of hours in search of any standard gauge steam workings – still without success. Eventually we returned to our hotel in Stralsund behind DR 132 539 on E416 1650 Wismar – Stralsund, howling nicely into the cold winter night with load 13.

I know that this could be mistaken as a posting from @D1537 , but you will notice that it couldn’t be because there is a Class 45 in the move.

I could have taken Deltic 21 on the 0005 KX-Newcastle but I knew that Deltic 17 was allocated to the 0550 KX-Aberdeen. With the prospect of it being the last Deltic to work throughout between Kings Cross & Aberdeen I decided to make sure I was in position to cover the service. I did a fill in move to Leicester before taking No 17 north. The journey went okay until the train came to a standstill south of Northallerton. A signalling failure making the train over 60 minutes late into Edinburgh. Unfortunately No 17 didn’t work through to Aberdeen being replaced by a class 47. I retreated along with several others to the pub to wait for the southbound overnight services. No 21 had also made it to Edinburgh via the 0810 from Newcastle and was then allocated to the 2025 Edinburgh-Kings Cross. Taking this to London would then get me into a decent position to cover the final day of scheduled Deltic operations.
The only other Deltics out today were:
55002 0749 York-Liverpool and 1205 return.
55009 0718 Edinburgh-Carlisle, to Newcastle where it was removed because of boiler failure. After repairs it went onto work 2030 Newcastle-KX.
55019 worked light engine to KX before working the 1403 to York. It then returned again to KX light engine.

47490 had hit an object on the track which had broken something. After a while the next Euston arrived to help out.

We stopped here to inspect 47490 properly. I can't remember if 1H45 pushed the train to New St or something else came to rescue, but if it was the latter it can't have been interesting as I went home.

It was time to leave the DDR today, as our visas were expiring, so it was another early start from Stralsund. DR 112 437 (yes, that loco yet again) on the 0636 to Rostock, where we connected into the main train of the day, D438 0917 Rostock – Koln. DR 132 427 worked this as far as the border station of Lubeck, where DB 218 498 added a couple of coaches and took over as far as Hamburg. Here we exchanged to an electric loco, DB 110 290 for the long run to Koln via Bremen, Essen and Dusseldorf.

At Koln, Ken and I parted company. He was en route to Brussels to intercept his wife (and fellow basher) Jane, with the intention that we could / should / might all meet up again in Hungary in a few days’ time. That left me with the rather daunting task of navigating myself from Koln towards Hungary, armed with only the Thomas Cook European Timetable, naïve intuition, and some verbal suggestions from Ken.

Inevitably I chose to keep it simple, so I boarded D223 1449 Amsterdam – Wien Westbahnhof, which had DB 110 120 from Koln to Frankfurt via Bonn and Mainz. DB 111 004 dropped on the other end to take us through to Nurnberg.

Tulyar’s last run on an ordinary BR passenger train which may well have been a positioning move to get it to London, prior to the ‘Deltic Farewell Railtour‘ on 2nd January!

I was returning from a trip to York (details post #2545, 31/12/2021).

This was the day that I found out that Deltic 1 and 20 had been withdrawn ending months of speculation as to whether they would return to service. I took some time out in the early afternoon to visit the scrapyard in Doncaster Works where No 20 was already in the process of being dismantled. No 1 stood alongside waiting the same fate.

I was aware that the Clayton West branch was scheduled for closure and decided to travel the branch even though it was in the dark.

Thursday 31st December 1981

So here we are with the last day of Deltics and everyone was wondering how things would pan out. The news that had been gleaned the previous evening was that Deltic 2 had failed working the 1205 Liverpool-York and was declared unfit to work the final Deltic Scotsman special. No 15 was allocated to work the outward leg of the special to Edinburgh with No 22 working the return leg. As a consequence No 22 was allocated to work the 2215 KX-Aberdeen sleeper as far as Edinburgh. The remaining serviceable Deltics (21, 8 and 17) would be returned to York on the 0940, 1403 & 1603 services to York. Deltic 15 would be sent south on the 1550 York-KX meaning it would be the final Deltic to arrive into KX on a service train. I was therefore planning on how best to cover these last services. Having arrived into KX sometime after 0500 I was still asleep in the stock of my overnight train when I was woken by the sound of a Deltic. Unknown to me Deltic 22 did not work the overnight sleeper to Edinburgh, instead it was held back to work the 0550 KX-Aberdeen. I decided that I would take No 22 to Edinburgh and then return south by HST to cover the 1550 York-KX. I took No 22 north and by York more information had been gleaned. Deltic 19 which had spent several days out of service at Doncaster had worked the 0005 KX-Newcastle and was scheduled to work light engine to York. However Gateshead were short of traction and sent 19 onto Edinburgh via the 0810 from Newcastle. It was now booked to return from Edinburgh on the 1630 Aberdeen-York meaning this would be the last Deltic hauled train. Another piece of promising news was that no locomotive had been allocated to work the 0550 forward from Edinburgh meaning that there was a prospect of having Deltic 22 throughout to Aberdeen. When I arrived into Edinburgh I was disappointed to see a class 47 waiting to take the train forward to Aberdeen. I was however pleased to be in position to cover that last Deltic hauled train. I had about seven hours to wait for my train south and filled it with a few journeys with type 2 traction, however my thoughts returned to the Deltics that I would be missing in the south. I had in fact made the right move because things in the south had turned out quite bad. Deltic 21 had successfully worked its final train to York. No 8 however was declared a failure due to flat batteries leaving Deltic 17 to work the final train out of KX. A lot of bashers planned to take No 15 to Grantham with the 1550 York-KX and then head north with No 17 to York. They could then travel to Newcastle to pick up No 19 on the final train to York. These plans were scuppered when a broken rail between Newark and Grantham brought services to a standstill. Deltic 17 and its train were eventually terminated at Grantham. Deltic 17 returned south although it disgraced itself by failing around Knebworth. Those bashers hoping to take No 17 to York were left scrambling to get any train to Darlington or Durham. By comparison I had a rather less stressful day finally arriving into York with Deltic 19 a little after 2300 bringing a close to this chapter of Deltics.

Two for the price of one. 30th and 31st Dec 1982

An 11.55 Man Vic - Edinburgh additional caught the eye as a potential Class 40 working on the 30th and we were rewarded with 40106. It was well loaded with bashers and even a few normals and was reasonably festive. 40106 also obliged on the return 16.18 Edinburgh - Man Vic relief but unfortunately (or so we thought) was removed at Carstairs. Salvation appeared from Carlisle in the shape of 40035 which was a most acceptable replacement and boded well for the morrow.

New Years Eve celebrations began early and the roadshow was much increased for the repeat performance, again 11.55 ex Man Vic. There was some trepidation re spending New Year's Day stuck in Scotland as tonight there was no return additional to take us back, especially after a minor contretemps and delay at Carstairs when 035 pulled up in the platform in order to run round but the shunter was unable to uncouple. The solution was to propel back to Carstairs Sth Jcn and then via the on to Edinburgh. This is the only occasion I know of when a service train ran via both Carstairs platform and the avoiding curve.

We did manage the connection onto the last up service from Edinburgh which was the most unseasonal 47424 and then 86241 southwards.

As on Xmas Eve 83 I had a seven mile walk home getting in just before midnight to a warm fire but an otherwise chilly welcome. "I thought we were going out?" asked she who must be obeyed. "I have been" was my reply.

It was still frosty at Easter.

I was on 40035 from Carlisle as per post #2437 on this thread. Crazy days.

Thursday 30th December 1982

I've often said I can barely remember many of the days I had out 40 years ago. Today is the best example of all. Back in May (post #649), I posted a partial set of moves for 30th December 1982 as I had a question in relation to one of the locations...

Now, those moves were recreated from class listings I had as I didn't have my moves book from winter 82/83; I still don't have. I have some separate books with moves by class, but at that point didn't have my 87 (or 40) listing, so assumed that the final stage of this great day to Oban must have been either a Can or an 87. Now I have my 40 and 87 moves.... How on earth did I forget that it was in fact...

40035 Carlisle to Manchester Victoria (via Shap and Bolton), 16.17 Edinburgh to Manchester additional.

Wow (and it did it the following day in reverse too, according to the Motherlist). 40106 had done a morning relief on 30th up to Edinburgh. I wonder if we had gen or fell onto it; if the latter, that must have been my luckiest move ever.

The rest of the day (in the quote) wasn't too bad!
