How did you get on btw.......was there a derailed hoover in the way? ;)
I watched "Dave" make a fleeting visit to the Wensleydale Railway today as they dropped 47714 off, so there can't have been any damage. General wibble suggested the Class 70 had damaged the track causing the 50 to fall off.

Another reason for me to dislike GM diesels, as if there weren't sufficient reasons already.
I find it abhorrent that something that broadly resembles a class 47 has one of those ghastly engines inside!

I had to cut short my visit on Friday for reasons I'll not go into, so just did one return trip with the 20s down the hill for the 37s back up. I say 37s, but 508 fagged on Keighley bank, so 57 did all the work as far as Ingrow loop, where 508 was resuscitated. 57 dragging three dead locos (the 20s were on the back) plus 6 Mark 1s was entertaining.

See posts 1,643 and 1,656 up thread for details of my previous haulages from 508 (back when it was 37090). 57 received the red pen treatment!

I remember 37090 well as a Cambridge line regular but especially for a Shoeburyness to Spalding Adex when the train divided (not intenionally!) near Bishops Stortford.

Both the Crewe test trains active today, with a generator and my first trip on a twin-tank.

I think this was the only time the Milton Keynes-Penzance dropped a no-heat loco. However the guard told us it was being ripped at BTM as, to be fair, it was already getting warm in the Mk3s. So we got off at Cheltenham.

In a continuing theme, instead of going to Poole we went back to New Street for something no-heat that turned up with something that wasn't no-heat.

I also remember 37090 well as, after arriving at Stranraer on the overnight with a 27+47 combo, it was on the early train to Glasgow, it was freezing, and the boiler didn't work.

Friday 19th August 1983

After a packed week mainly split between moves out of Inverness and Glasgow QS with a couple of flurries around Edinburgh, the final day of my Freedom of Scotland arrived.

Good to start with a required Syphon after a week on the WHL...

37188 Glasgow QS to Tyndrum Upper, 1B07 06.00 Glasgow to Mallaig
37026 Tyndrum Lower to Arrochar, 1T16 07.40 Oban to Glasgow QS
37085 Arrochar to Crianlarich, 1B08 08.04 Glasgow QS to Oban
37027 Crianlarich to Bridge of Orchy, 1B10 08.34 Glasgow to Mallaig
37022 Bridge of Orchy to Dumbarton C, 1T24 09.19 Mallaig to Glasgow
37026 Dumbarton C to Arrochar, 1B11 12.55 Glasgow to Oban
37085 Arrochar to Glasgow QS, 1T32 12.25 Oban to Glasgow

Walk across the city and my only visit to Glasgow Central in the whole week, but not a bad move...

37090 (required) Glasgow C to Carlisle (via Dumfries), 1M89 15.50 service
87007 Carlisle to Preston, 1M52 17.10 Glasgow to Euston
87029 Preston to WBQ, 1M47 17.20 Glasgow to Birmingham NS

It's interesting to see what was working just a few years after my near 40 year rail enthusiast hiatus had started at the end of 1984. With all these converted ETH duffs about, you might have enjoyed it in my and @Falcon1200's days!

I never had 47230.....and it was actually one of my last 5 to see. I finally saw it passing my house on the Paisley dogfood train in 1981. 225 and 248 were also among my last 5 for sight......but then i got them both for haulage on the same day in 1983!

I started bashing in around 1981 and I've posted some of my Class 40 moves in this thread before (there are some starting at post #5958) unfortunately a lot of my books from this era have been lost in the years since. My only complete records are from 1985 to 1989 which is when I packed it in myself :)

So many of us packed it in at some point and then drifted back.

A bit like bands from the 80s that are now back on tour!

Ah, 40s as well! In that case we may have bumped into one another somewhere in N Wales that year! I've lost 2 books, so I have a hole in 1982, which is real pity, as I was out and about lots that year. 1985 was when my interest dwindled with so much fewer loco hauled services about and not as many Adexs, Reliefs and Footexs. I didn't really like the big logos and numbers either.....it felt a bit like dumbing down to me! And there were no 40s left ....
By 1987 I was buried in the acid house scene and trains became irrelevant
So many of us packed it in at some point and then drifted back.
While I always noticed things whenever I travelled by train after I'd lost interest, it wasn't until I started using the Caley Sleeper a couple of years ago that my interest was rekindled.....and I'm now building a model railway to recreate my early spotting and bashing days in miniature! The modern railway is a pale shadow of the one that I knew, so my only option is to recreate my own railway, exactly as I remember it.
