Saturday 3rd June 1973:
One of our regular Saturday bashes round Polmadie and Eastfield started off in an unprecedented way with a green-liveried Longsight 25 on the morning Oban-Glasgow. I can only assume that it must have gone down to Oban on the previous night's 01 00 passenger and news from Queen Street or the overnight Cadder-Oban freight.
Helensburgh Upper-Queen Street: 5204
Polmadie Depot: 12, 208, 397, 408/13/17/21/32, 1606/57/97, 1721/52, 1811/30/61, 5006/10, 5388, 5414, 7579, 8046/89, 8107/12.
Eastfield Depot: 2413, 3211/41/84, 3391/95, 3417/18, 3545, 3860/95, 5007/13/19, 5100/12/47/50/55/60, 5347/54/59/60/62/63/68/69/72/73/79/80/84/86/89, 5400/01/03/13, 6846/48/49/55, 6937, 7544, 8027/80, 8108/10/18/25/79. (Plus 5392+5394 seen passing on the main line with a push-pull service).
Usually we would return home to Helensburgh Upper on either the 16 38 Queen Street-Mallaig or the 18 35 to Oban but, on this occasion, one of us must have had an evening engagement as we returned to Helensburgh Central on an EMU. Seen en route were 1976 at Queen Street High-Level and 3392 and 3889 at Yoker Yard.

By this time I was working in the Scottish Region Train Planning Section, Buchanan House, Glasgow and living in the city's West End. This particular evening, for some reason, I decided to go back to my parents' house near Garelochhead for the night....which meant an early start the following morning to catch the bus connecting with the 07 47 EMU from Helensburgh Central.
Hyndland-Glasgow Queen Street (LL): EMU
18 23 Queen Street-Garelochhead: 37 081 (Stock: TSO SC4110, TSO SC4145, TSO SC4133, BFK SC14055).
