Saturday 9th October 1982

Missing moves books, class listings, 40 somewhere in the day (The Bangor was 106 all day) bla bla bla...

47201 Rhyl to Llandudno Junction

I did 106 as follows...

WBQ to Bangor, 1D34 morning Bangor
Bangor to Man Vic, 1J30 morning Bangor return
Man Vic to Colwyn Bay, 1D21 afternoon Bangor
Llandudno J to WBQ, 1J31 evening Bangor

I don't know why I did the leap back from Colwyn Bay to Rhyl and ended up on the Duff. There must have been some dud gen.

Saturday 18th September 1982

Another one of my days recreated from my class listings...

25035 WBQ to Prestatyn
31253 York to Leeds
46047 Leeds to Man Vic

Now, 25035 was on The Bangor diagram and the bail at Prestatyn was the usual leap for 1E86 09.00 Llandudno to York. The fact that I ended up in York suggests the missing move was 40049 Prestatyn to York...

It was 049 from Prestatyn to York, but I also managed to get down to Sheffield to pick up 40077 on 1M34, the return from Skeg.

Saturday 11th September 1982

This is the first report from 1982 I have "reconstructed" from my class listings rather than my moves book. I know the gaps will be made up of 40s as the Llandudno-York and the York-Llandudno were 40-hauled on this day. The diagram that 25139 was on according to the Rat Haulage website was 40141 on the Motherlist, so who knows...

Anyway, here's the bits I've got. Not sure of the order...

25069 WBQ to Rhyl, this was on The Bangor
And I guess I picked up 40197 on the 09.00 Llandudno to York (although Prestatyn was the usual leap) or 40168 on the 09.30 Llandudno to Euston.

Whatever happened, I at some point had...

25139 Rhyl to Llandudno Junc
47346 Llandudno Junc to Rhyl
25069 Bangor to WBQ.

Don't worry, I'm not going back and filling in all the gaps, just the more interesting ones. So, this day turned out to be as follows...

25069 WBQ to Rhyl, 1D34 The Bangor
40168 Rhyl to Chester, 1A41 09.30 Llandudno to Euston
40141 Chester to WBQ, 1J66 09.44 Llandudno to Man Vic
40183 WBQ to Llandudno, 1M71 09.00 York to Llandudno
Unit presumably to Junction
47346 Llandudno J to Rhyl
25139 Rhyl to Llandudno J (this should have been 40141)
Unit or ETH Duff to Chester
40044/40001 Chester to Bangor, 1D63 17.27 Crewe to Holyhead. Motherlist says "These two loco were coupled in multiple but apparently
unable to power in multiple (it was discovered at Holyhead) due to one of the control air cocks on 40 001 being shut" - I don't know which one was powering then!!
25069 Bangor to WBQ, 1J31 The Bangor

It’s dragging time!
I was in Birmingham at the time but didn't turn out that day. Looks like I missed out on some fun.

16th October 1993

A day at Peak Rail.

Haulage from 45135, 20048 (carrying number 2014), D2128 and D100. This included a couple of runs with the Peaks double headed.

Somewhere up thread are a couple of phots from the day,, including the CoBo, which 'worked' a demonstration freight..

During the long break at Torrenieri, the majority of the passengers were taken by coaches to the annual mushroom and chestnut festival in a nearby village for a slap-up lunch of several courses. As my wife and I had been to that the previous year, we decided to join the train crew for lunch in the village restaurant near the station and a merry time was had by all.....although of course the train crew had to limit their wine consumption! We then spent the night in the beautiful city of Siena, before starting to head back to England via Milano the following day.

40058 1815 Kings Cross – Huddersfield via Doncaster, Hare Park, Wakefield Kirkgate, Mirfield
This was a returning charter for the Huddersfield Round Table.
47565 2133 Huddersfield – Manchester Victoria
This was delayed 5 minutes by the brake pipes becoming uncoupled as the train entered Huddersfield station.
86214 2330 Manchester Piccadilly – Birmingham New Street via Crewe, Wolverhampton, Bescot, Aston.
Aah, the good old Manchester – Gatwick overnight. A decent doss, and a different route every week, thanks to Saturday night engineering blocks …
(Sunday 18/10/81)
86xxx 0207 Birmingham New Street – Willesden WN34 signal
* Possibly piloted by a class 25 from Bletchley – too dossed out to notice *
47221 04xx Willesden WN34 Signal – Gatwick Airport, via Acton Canal Wharf, Kew East Jn., Brixton, East Croydon. 90’ late into Gatwick Airport.

Wednesday 17/10/84
Emerging at New Street from my sleeper overnight from Glasgow, I was heading for Reading, but didn’t need to be there until early afternoon, so I determined to have some fun on the way:
50032 0645 Birmingham New Street – Paddington via Solihull, High Wycombe
73123 1000 Victoria – Gatwick Airport
73138 1035 Gatwick Airport – Victoria
43132 + 43124 1245 Paddington – Reading
Once my appointment in Reading was over, I headed home to York on the through train from Portsmouth:
47474 1545 Reading – Birmingham New Street via Coventry
At New Street, instead of the expected 47/4, a 31/4 was waiting to re-engine:
31426 1755 Birmingham New Street – York via Sheffield, Moorthorpe, Viaduct, Leeds

Monday 17/10/88
After an event-filled day on the Birmingham – Nuneaton drags, I had headed north on the Fort William sleepers:
37404 0347 Mossend – Glasgow Queen Street via Stirling
37410 0550 Glasgow Queen Street – Fort William, with severe Monday Morning slipping in Queen Street tunnel
37402 1005 Fort William – Mallaig
37402 1230 Mallaig – Fort William
37410 1445 Fort William – Garelochhead
37401 1733 Garelochhead – Tyndrum Upper
Walk to Tyndrum Lower
37406 1912 Tyndrum Lower – Arrochar & Tarbet
37423 + 37422 1957 Arrochar & Tarbet – Crianlarich
37405 2036 Crianlarich – Glasgow Queen Street
37410 2305 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling
So eight different class 37/4s in the course of the day, which was 100% 37/4 hauled (after arrival at Mossend).

Sunday 17/10/93 – a day with a couple of Standard Tanks in South-West Wales
43008 + 43149 0830 Reading – Newport
37422 1050 Newport – Swansea
80079 + 80080 1230 Swansea – Pembroke Dock via Carmarthen
80079 + 80080 1630 Pembroke Dock – Swansea via Carmarthen, 51’ late.
37422 2015 Swansea – Newport

Tuesday 17/10/00
I was flying from Stansted to Basel for a business meeting:
43xxx + 43176 0749 Reading – Paddington
317 670 Liverpool Street – Stansted Airport
Meanwhile, once I was safely airborne, the 1210 Kings Cross – Leeds derailed at Hatfield, beginning the end of the unloved Railtrack, and precipitating a state of total paralysis over the UK rail network for many months to come.

It's entirely possible I was on The Bangor that day, but I'll probably never know now unless my missing books turn up. I loved that diagram which I would normally pick up at Bank Quay at twenty past eight in the morning. If I was late out or on an off peak ticket, the move would be the diagram two hours later and pick up the Bangor on its way back to Manchester. That second diagram was less reliably a 40.

27th April 1983...

See posts #529 to #532...

I joined @CW2 and 40057 at Warrington and went to Bangor and back. Did the exact same move with the same loco the following day. Would have been after a day of 6th form.

I had to read that twice. What a convoluted route! (Streatham or Crystal Palace?)

I didn't record whether Streatham or Crystal Palace - I was probably a bit sleepy at the time!
That train took a different route every week, or so it seemed. There were so many variants of diversions / draggings on the LM as well as on the Southern. That and the benefit of Mk 1 compos made for a good entertaining and comfortable overnight.

Thanks! I almost threw away my moves book a few years ago when I had lost interest but my wife thankfully persuaded me not to.

Unfortunately I threw all mine away thinking at the time I would never look at them again. I'm really regretting that decision now. :(

Stupidly I disposed of all my records pre-1983 as well; Now I have no idea why ! But I do have those from 83 onwards, thankfully. Hence:

The Leeds Division had a very strong programme of excursions by special trains, and today’s one was from York to Folkestone and Dover:
47255 06xx York – Dover Priory via Leeds, ECML, Canonbury, Stratford, North London Line
After a few hours in Dover it was time to come home, but 47255’s boiler wouldn’t start.
47255 17xx Dover Priory – Leicester
We took a different route on the way back, via Willesden, Dudding Hill, and the Midland Main Line to Leicester, where steaming 45044 was waiting to take over:
45044 20xx Leicester – York via Toton, Beighton Jn, Leeds
OK, so the motive power was nothing much to get excited about, but plenty of new track for me to enjoy, and a fair bit of spotting achieved too.

Saturday 18/10/80
86227 1340 Euston – Birmingham International
86249 1600 Birmingham International – Birmingham New Street
40117 1843 Birmingham New Street – York via Derby, Sheffield, Pontefract
40117 was working a Motor Show additional. I wasn’t sure whether it was starting from International or New Street, hence the alighting at International in the first place.

Thursday 18/10/84
At this time I had wife + flat in York and I’d just started work in Glasgow Control, living in a bedsit in Hillhead. I was working late shift, so there wasn’t much choice of traction to get me to work on time:
43xxx + 43048 0947 York – Edinburgh
47703 1330 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
I was working a 1500 – 2300 shift. Part of my role was to provide meal break relief to the train running section controllers, so for 30 minutes at a time, I got to understand how each area worked, and to deal with any issues arising. On this day thankfully I wasn’t involved when the up Fort William Sleepers loco 37081 failed at Rannoch. The result was a 2-hour delay whilst big NB 37147 was taken off a freight and sent to rescue the sleepers. Moreover the train was running via Queen Street Low Level to try to recoup some lost time, so after work I made my way to the station to pick up my prize:
37147 (2333) Glasgow Queen Street (LL) – Mossend via Sunnyside Jn
The rest of the night was a bit “canny” (and not in a good sense):
(Friday 19/10/84)
86230 00xx Mossend – Carlisle
This had severe wheelspin departing from Motherwell on load 15, and nearly became gapped in the neutral section.
86259 0346 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
Of course this loco lives on today, often to be seen working railtours on the WCML.

Tuesday 18/10/88
47544 0002 Stirling – Perth
Perth station shunt by 08712
47635 0110 Perth – Inverness
37416 0655 Inverness – Kyle of Lochalsh
37416 1128 Kyle of Lochalsh – Inverness
The 1415 / 1430 Perth – Edinburgh was often a good bet for a pilot loco from Inverness to Perth. Not today, unfortunately:
47542 1415 Inverness – Perth
47702 1647 Perth – Glasgow Queen Street
My ratio of Sulzer : EE was getting seriously overloaded in favour of Sulzer today, so I had to have another burst on the WHL to even things up:
37405 1834 Glasgow Queen Street – Crianlarich
37408 2036 Crianlarich – Glasgow Queen Street

Sunday 18/10/92
A day of diversions on the Gatwick Express services:
43025 + 43033 0747 Reading – Paddington
73202 0900 Victoria – Gatwick Airport via Balham, Carshalton, Horsham
73212 1020 Gatwick Airport – Victoria via Horsham, Carshalton, Balham
43087 + 43140 1230 Paddington – Reading

Another of those pub evenings in Cheltenham, with the joys of the Syphon(s) banking the overnight on the way back. Must have been a tram to get there then:

45128 Cheltenham - New St 1S19
47287 Lickey Banker 1S19

No, not a typo - a Duff doing the banking. Not impressed!

(As an aside, 37287 had by this time become 37414, working from Inverness.)

On my way home from college in Harrogate:
47549 1620 Harrogate – Leeds
46048 1707 Leeds – York

Sunday 19/10/80
55014 0258 York – Kings Cross via Selby, Joint Lines, Peterborough, Cambridge.
2 hours late.

Monday 19/10/81
37092 1654 Liverpool Street – Cambridge, 15’ late.
47117 1832 Cambridge – Liverpool Street
The return trip ran 30’ late due to some issue at Stansted, where on the Down road 37047 had failed and was being assisted forward by 37173.

Wednesday 19/10/88
37405 1204 Glasgow Queen Street – Dumbarton Central
EMU Dumbarton Central – Airdrie – Partick - Glasgow Central Low Level
47519 1425 Glasgow Central – Preston
There was a shortage of serviceable electric locos in Scotland, so this ETH 47 was turned out on a Euston service. It did well to lose only 25 minutes as far as Preston, where it was replaced by 86402:
86402 1715 Preston – Crewe

Saturday 19/10/91
This day presented a clash of dates: in the UK there were steam workings from Cambridge to Kings Lynn in connection with the NSE Rail Day, whilst over in Germany there were several days of Plandampf on the Berlin – Magdeburg line. I worked out a way in which I could cover it all:
43028 + 43030 0601 Reading – Paddington
47808 0745 Kings Cross – Cambridge (Charter), re-engineing to:
70000 0930 Cambridge – Kings Lynn
34027 (running as 34072) 1140 Kings Lynn – Cambridge
317 356 Cambridge – Kings Cross
47521 1502 Paddington – Reading
… home to pick up my bags for my trip to Germany, and then …
47807 1804 Reading – Gatwick Airport via Willesden South West Sidings, Kensington Olympia, Clapham Jn, East Croydon
… then off to Berlin for more steam!

Saturday 19/10/96
Another steam special, this time a Cardiff – Hastings special with steam from Kensington Olympia:
47522 0832 Reading – Kensington Olympia via Acton Main Line, South West Sidings
828 1011 Kensington Olympia – Hastings via Brixton, East Croydon, Redhill, Tonbridge, Ashford
828 1616 Hastings – Kensington Olympia via Battle, Tonbridge, Orpington
47522 1913 Kensington Olympia – Reading via South West Sidings, Acton Main Line
The circular nature of the itinerary around the south-eastern corner of England involved a fair chunk of new steam track for me.

This was my first and so far only visit to Llangollen - I'd like to go back.

I know how you feel there, I've not been for years and I would like to see what it's like there now. Still need to do the new bit of track on that extension! I don't even know what the Llangollen gang use any more, when I went it was 20142, 46010, 37240, 37901 and something else, a 47 I believe.

Definitely a job for 2022!

Leander was turned on the triangle at Leeds, and Compound 1000 was added as pilot for the run to York via Harrogate.

Four Deltics 55010/014/015/022 noted on York Depot (by then the entire class was allocated to York). 1000 was detached from 5690 and it moved off to the Museum/Depot area. Then after a short stay at York it was back to Carnforth behind 5690.

“Leander Enterprise” railtour

This ran from Derby to York via Carnforth. We joined the train at Long Eaton.

An interesting tour - Leander is still very much active, but the Midland Compound hasn't worked on the main line for decades. 83001 is a pretty attractive choice too.

Meanwhile, this is what I was up to:

Friday 20/10/78
I was living with my sister in York, but my parents still lived in Reading. I took the opportunity of a school trip to London by minibus to duck out and visit my parents:
50027 1530 Paddington – Reading

Sunday 20/10/85
37117 1608 Glasgow Central – Edinburgh via Shotts
This was the 0959 from Liverpool, with a portion to both Glasgow Central and Edinburgh. After running via the G&SW to Glasgow Central, it then split in the platform, with a portion running via Shotts to Edinburgh, giving a once-per-week chance for a loco-hauled service via Shotts – and in this case producing an NB 37 for good measure. On arrival at Edinburgh 37117 was failed due to a defective speedometer, so another required NB 37 was turned out for the next leg of the diagram:
37030 1810 Edinburgh – Carstairs
86245 1850 Carstairs – Carlisle
87007 1946 Carlisle – Lockerbie
86255 1946 Lockerbie – Carstairs
47xxx 2124 Carstairs – Edinburgh
47527 2325 Edinburgh – Inverness via Stirling, Perth (Sleeper)
27066 pilot 0110 (21/10/85) Perth - Dalwhinnie

Saturday 20/10/90
There were some engineering blockades in the North West, resulting in various short term alterations and diversions:
47805 0950 Reading – Coventry
86426 1120 Coventry – Stafford
90016 1255 Stafford – Crewe
155 317 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly
56035 1426 Manchester Victoria – Liverpool Lime Street
I don’t remember what prompted the appearance of a 56 on a Victoria – Lime Street service – it wasn’t football related - but I wasn’t complaining.
90016 1610 Liverpool Lime Street – Runcorn
37408 + 37691 1629 Runcorn – Liverpool Lime Street
31132 1707 Liverpool Lime Street – Wigan North Western via St Helens Jn
47974 1734 Wigan North Western – Crewe
This was scheduled to be diverted, but the engineering work had been cancelled at the last minute because of an OHLE workers dispute, so we ran main line under the wires.
Thence 155 329 Crewe – Abergavenny.

20/10/1990 was one of the Network North West days with several service trains hauled / piloted by freight locomotives

Details of all the workings are on here
https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/ (sorry you will have to look up the date as I can only link to the main site)

My moves that day were
37422 Barrow in Furness to Chorley
26025 / 31434 Chorley to Lancaster
56035 / 31413 Lancaster to Manchester Victoria
155317 Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe
37691 / 37408 Crewe to Liverpool Lime Street
31132 Liverpool Lime Street to Preston
142xxx Preston to Barrow in Furness

Not a huge amount but quality over quantity. Was a late start on the 09:08 ex Barrow for the 37 as it trumped a 142!! For the first time I did a couple of the same moves as @CW2

Ah yes, that makes sense - and explains the appearance of a pair of 37s as well. I missed out on 26025 though - shame.

Having arrived at Inverness off the sleeper, I was up and about bright and early, hoping for a pair of Type 2s on the Aberdeen road. It produced:
26038 + 27055 0502 Inverness – Aberdeen
47461 0730 Aberdeen – Dundee
27001 0930 Dundee – Edinburgh
27014 1115 Edinburgh – Inverkeithing
27207 1136 Inverkeithing – Edinburgh
47715 1230 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
… and back to work the afternoon shift …

Thursday 21/10/99
Paddington reopened this morning, after the Ladbroke Grove crash. I had a meeting in Doncaster to attend. Naturally I chose the train with a class 90 on it:
43171 + 43133 0744 Reading – Paddington
90021 0910 Kings Cross – Doncaster
91004 1535 Doncaster – Kings Cross
43xxx + 43035 1803 Paddington – Reading

Unfortunately I recorded my tram moves in a different notebook, which now appears to have been lost.

SUNDAY 21st OCTOBER 2007:

After our first night in Bamberg, we were off to spend the day following the 'Zoigl'. For the uniniated - which I was until being told to follow our gruppenfuehrer on this particular morning - certain remote villages in North-Eastern Franconia, close to the Czech border, have a communal brewery in which a special beer is made every autumn and is then transferred to fermenting vessels to mature in various houses in the village. When the beer is ready to drink, the householder hangs a 'zoigl' - a wooden 'Star of David' sign over the front door - and all and sundry come in to drink the beer in the family's front room, for a very modest fee. This is a very convivial occasion - even if you don't speak German - and, as you can imagine, after several houses in several villages strung out along the meandering single track branch line with its two-hourly service, things tended to become a wee bit blurred - not to mention the queue for the toilet on the single car railbuses! This is what I managed to record:

RE 3005, 09 41 Bamberg Hbf-Hof: 612 0xx/612 5xx + 612 093/612 593 + 612 036/612 536
Vogtlandbahn 86559, 11 48 Hof-Windischeschenbach: VT 24
Vogtlandbahn 86xxx, xx xx Windischeschenbach-Neumarkt: VT 18
Vogtlandbahn 86xxx, xx xx Neumarkt-Weiden: VT 24
RE xxxx, xx xx Weiden-Nuernberg Hbf: ??? ??? (Hic!)
RE xxxx, xx xx Nuernberg Hbf-Bamberg Hbf: 146 243

.....and so to bed! (Hic!)

After visiting my parents in Reading, it’s time to go home to York, with the best available traction:
50019 1606 Reading – Paddington
55008 1800 Kings Cross – York

Monday 22/10/79
A quick trip home from University:
55007 2015 Kings Cross – York, 10’ late, running on one engine only.

Thursday 22/10/81
A 37 bash on the Cambridge line:
37034 1005 Liverpool Street – Newport
37036 1104 Newport – Harlow Town
37089 1132 Harlow Town – Cambridge
37034 1244 Cambridge – Harlow Town
37036 1332 Harlow Town – Cambridge
37084 1444 Cambridge – Liverpool Street

Saturday 22/10/83
I had worked a week of nights in Leeds Control, and Friday night / Saturday morning threw up some problems for the traction controller covering the Leeds area. There was some form of national demonstration taking place in London, and a couple of relief trains had been laid on. In addition, there were a couple of reliefs to the West Country. Of course, everything was booked to be worked by “HQ Control Spare class 47/4, Control to Provide”, whereas in reality the cupboard was bare. The result was that a couple of steam heat class 37s working in on freights to the Leeds area got snaffled on arrival and put to passenger use. I needed one of them – 37180 – for haulage, and was hopeful that it would be turned out onto one of the reliefs to the West Country, it being a Western boilered loco. Alas, the order the incoming freights arrived in meant that 37180 ended up working a later relief to Kings Cross (which a couple of my mates were pleased to have), whereas I was happy enough with a long mileage run off 37099:
37099 0940 Leeds – Bristol Temple Meads via Cudworth, Sheffield, Birmingham New Street
The train was going through to Plymouth, but the 37 was removed at Bristol in favour of something Sulzery, so I alighted too.
50005 1404 Bristol Temple Meads – Bristol Parkway
50047 1441 Bristol Parkway – Plymouth
Incidentally I never did get 37180 for haulage. It was refurbished as 37886, and was torched before I got even close to having it, whereas 37099 lives on to this day, working for Colas.
Thursday 22/10/92
We had a team building weekend in Llandudno, to which our families were also invited, so after work we all piled aboard the 1703 Euston – Holyhead …
43173 + 43181 1703 Euston – Llandudno Junction
DMU Llandudno Junction - Llandudno
