9th March 1985

An event to mark 150 years of the Tyne Valley line was being held at Hexham. A special train was therefore organised with something a bit different on the front:

92220 Newcastle - Hexham 1G40
31191 Stock shunt at Hexham 1G40

I didn't want to fester for the return, so took a unit back to Newcastle.

The only time I've had a kettle on the main line in England.

I've found a page with some phots of the event.

9th March 1991

86102 New St - Watford Junction

Watford 1 Newcastle 2

Unit back to Brum

55006 2204 Bradford Exchange – Leeds
DMU Leeds – York

Saturday 10/03/79
55019 1711 York – Doncaster via Selby
47525 1836 Doncaster – York via Selby, 15’ late.

Monday 10/03/80
I was on my way back to London after a long weekend in Scotland.
86230 0041 Carstairs – Crewe
I had intended doing the Inverness – Euston overnight forward from Crewe, but I overdossed and missed it. So I improvised, starting by boarding the 0603 Crewe – Cardiff and going back to sleep again …
25220 0603 Crewe – Shrewsbury
47463 0740 Shrewsbury – Wolverhampton
86245 0846 Wolverhampton – Birmingham New Street
85020 0958 Birmingham New Street – Coventry
87032 1043 Coventry – Birmingham New Street
My class 50 machine was waiting at New Street:
50018 1325 Birmingham New Street – Paddington via Solihull, Reading.
We did Reading to Paddington (36 miles) in 24 minutes, arriving 11’ early, and beating the HST scheduled timings.
As I went home to Harringay via Kings Cross, I spied another class 40 about to depart:
40084 1635 Kings Cross – Stevenage
EMU Stevenage – Harringay

Tuesday 10/03/81
I had seen my pet class 40, 40069, work from Kings Cross to Cleethorpes and return today, and amazingly it stuck to diagram. Its next working was the 2000 Kings Cross – Aberdeen:
40069 2000 Kings Cross – Newcastle via Selby
6’ late start, waiting loco -> 20’ late, station overtime -> 14’ late, time regained by loco.
(Wednesday 11/03/81)
On arrival at Newcastle, I stepped straight off my 40 machine – 40069 – and onto my Deltic machine – 55019 – for the return journey:
55019 0115 Newcastle – Kings Cross via Selby
A perfect overnight for me. I was in Newcastle for fewer than 5 minutes that night,

Saturday 10/03/84
After a day at Inverness, now it was time for the West Highland Line:
37027 0550 Glasgow Queen Street – Tulloch
27001 banker to Cowlairs
37184 0915 Tulloch – Arrochar & Tarbet
37043 1111 Arrochar & Tarbet – Fort William
37175 1415 Fort William – Helensburgh Upper
37184 1736 Helensburgh Upper – Bridge of Orchy
37027 1911 Bridge of Orchy – Glasgow Queen Street
47xxx 2225 Glasgow Queen Street – Mossend via Stirling
I got myself a sleeper berth, and dossed out very soundly, so I didn’t get the class 47 number.

Sunday 10/03/85
47017 0400 Perth – Inverness
26041 + 26034 0805 Inverness – Invershin
I alighted from the Lairg Papers at Invershin to walk down to the Invershin Hotel, and feast on a breakfast of kippers. Splendid!
26034 + 26041 1106 Invershin – Inverness
After that, it was just Duffs all the way …
47274 1252 Inverness – Aberdeen
47707 1530 Aberdeen – Edinburgh
47703 1830 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Grahamston

My goodness that is quicker than anything loco hauled in the RPS database. The record for loco-hauled being 47624, 25mins, 15 seconds on the 10.35 Oxford-Paddington, 15/6/85. The perfect run, by the sounds of it. Do you have a detailed log? The RPS would be keen to add it to their archive.

I'll have a delve in the boxes under the bed to see if I have any more details.

EDIT:

I've taken a look at my original notes, but there are no detailed timings. There is only the comment that we arrived 11' early, and did it from Reading in 24 minutes. It was a load 7 cross-country set.
Sorry I can't provide more data.

I think you were a few months ahead of me arriving in Glasgow Control.

My official start date was the Monday, 12th March 1984, on the Friday trip I found a B&B near Hillhead Subway station to stay in for the first few days, before relocating to a bedsit near Queens Park. All a long time ago now.....

Sunday 10th March 1985

I was at Leeds Control, but there was a reorganisation and my job was abolished. I hung on as supernumerary for a few weeks whilst job-hunting. My interview in Glasgow was 28 June 1984, and when I went into Leeds Control on 12/07/84 (commuting to work on the Scarborough Spa Express!) I was greeted by all the staff wearing black arm bands. "Who has died?" I asked. "Nobody - this is in memory of one of our colleagues who has been exiled to the Frozen North - you've got the job in Glasgow Control" said the DCC. So the following day I set off to Glasgow and - like you - find myself a bedsit in Hillhead. The Grade "C" job was 2-shifted, 0700 - 1500 and 1500 - 2300, so I had the choice of living in central Glasgow, or finding somewhere that I could commute from which matched the earliest start / latest finish times. Gourock was the answer, and I moved into a seafront flat there on 01/11/84, my first step on the property-owning ladder.

TGV 4505 EC 9247, 12 45 Paris Lyon-Milano Porta Garibaldi

Overnight in Milano, dining in a rather good and very economical Italian restaurant run by a Chinese family!

SATURDAY 10th MARCH 2015:

A quick day trip to Arezzo on our Tuscan branch line....loco-hauled on the outward journey and EMU on the return:

E464 880 R 6167, 10 56 Pratovecchio Stia-Arezzo
ETT 24 R 1184, 17 17 Arezzo-Pratovecchio Stia

E464 880 was built for Trasporto Ferroviario Toscano (Tuscan Rail Transport) in 2009....tagged onto the end of a massive order of over 700 classmates for Trenitalia. It came with a three car 'Vivalto' double-deck push-pull set, but loco and stock were swapped with Trenitalia in 2017 for a brand new 'Jazz' five car articulated EMU.

Thanks for looking. I commuted from Reading in the 1980s whilst working at Paddington. I regret not timing my morning commutes on the both HST and loco-hauled services, especially first thing in the morning, but feel sure I had some sparkling runs. The first up HST with a clear road all the way to the blocks at Paddington could be quite exhilarating, especially waiting for the first major brake application at Old Oak. Would have been interesting to see the log of your run as it looks as though the performance was exceptional.

Yes, I too commuted from Reading to Paddington over a number of years. Once Paddington was resignalled and ATP installed, the opportunity to overspeed was blocked, so the fastest runs predate that.

31127 16xx York – Rotherham Masborough via Cudworth
31293 1759 Rotherham Masborough – Leeds via Viaduct
40081 1907 Leeds – York
The 1800 Manchester Victoria – Newcastle was 40023 as far as Leeds, where it was removed, no heat, and swiftly replaced by 40081. Approaching York, the driver left the braking too late, then made an emergency application which brought us to an undignified halt right across Holgate Junction.

Thursday 11/03/82
The Bakerloo Line ran peak hour services through to Watford Junction, but was about to be cut back permanently to only run to/from Harrow & Wealdstone, so I had to do it whilst there was still a chance:
Bakerloo Line, Paddington – Watford Junction
86101 1839 Watford Junction – Euston

Friday 11/03/83
Another trip to Ireland in the offing:
45144 2023 York – Manchester Victoria
47466 2240 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead

Sunday 11/03/84
I was in the Fort William sleepers …
86248 00xx Mossend – Euston via Golborne Jn, Newton le Willows, Winwick Jn
This might have been dragged from Crewe to Stafford, but I was dossing soundly in my nice Mk 3 sleeper. Can anybody help?
50016 0850 Paddington – Birmingham New Street via Solihull
50016 1420 Birmingham New Street – Exeter St Davids via Hartlebury, Gloucester, Bristol
50049 (+50007) 1825 Exeter St Davids – Yeovil Jn
50049 and 50007 were coupled in multiple and both running, but – as was sometimes the case with 50s – the multi working didn’t function correctly, so 50007 never took power.
50023 1929 Yeovil Jn – Exeter St Davids
45148 piloting 43177 + 43034 2051 Exeter St Davids – Plymouth
This was the 1240 Edinburgh – Plymouth. 43034 wasn’t powering so 45148 had been added as a pilot to get it over the South Devon Banks.

Monday 11/03/85
An evening trip out from Glasgow:

37017 1850 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street

Due to a shortage of units a loco hauled train was running on the Derby to Crewe service. Derby seemed to be scraping the bottom of the barrel in using a RTC Duff.

Crewe works used to send locos fresh out of the works on a test run on the North Wales Coast on Wednesdays. Sometimes this was a 56. Armed with cheap March tickets, me and a mate tried our luck...

86422 New St - Crewe 1S61
47709 (+47441) Crewe - Holyhead 1D43

Well that wasn't quite what we were hoping for!

We had time for a pint before heading back to Brum...

47424 Holyhead - Crewe 1A78
47501 Crewe - New St 1V99

Well at least I put my yellow pen to use. The only time I've been to Holyhead, and how many others have been there behind a Shove-Duff?

11th March 1989

Sometimes having no gen can be useful.

I turned up at King's Cross to head north assuming that 91s were already operating on services to Leeds, so I was not surprised to see a Mark 4 set in the platform, and baled on. The guard then announced that this was the inaugural service, and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time...

It was bound to happen eventually!
I guess - like me - you were avoiding the strike days which were prevalent on BR, causing total network lockdowns for several days at a time.
It'll be interesting to see if our paths cross in Ireland too ...

11/03/1978 33107+8TC working the BR (SR) Crosstown IV Repeat railtour to Chessington Goods, Bricklayers Arms and North Woolwich amongst the meanderings. Highlight for me was running direct from North Woolwich to Liverpool Street via Stratford Southern Junction.

11/03/1981 55022 RSG 1L22 2300 Kings Cross to Bradford Interchange between London and Peterborough.

11/03/1983 08113 0705 St Blazey to Wenford Bridge from Bodmin General and Wenford Bridge to St Blazey in a cosy brake van. Highlight of this trip was being chased out of a field at Wenford Bridge by a stampeding herd of cows.

Same day found me trundling down to Par Harbour in 08945 from St Blazey shed then returning to the sidings behind st Blazey station.

I then boarded 37274 at St Blazey station for the run to Fowey on a freight from Goonbarrow to watch the china clay unloading before catching the empties back to Par.

Fun and games over it was back to Plymouth via a side trip to Looe in the forlorn hope of stowing away for on the ECS over the link later. Negotiations failed 47553 was the power from Liskeard on 1B61 Penzance to Bristol.

I wasn’t due in college at Harrogate until late morning, so I went on a little spin first:
47461 0910 York – Darlington
47416 0940 Darlington – York
This ran 25’ late, so the connecting DMU for Harrogate went without me …
Later that day:
31158 1853 York – Darlington, 20’ late
47426 1934 Darlington – York, 15’ late.

Wednesday 12/03/80
81011 1723 Euston – Bletchley
86212 1806 Bletchley – Euston
A required 81 on the Master Cobbler, how could I refuse?

Saturday 12/03/83
121 + 130 0830 Dublin Connolly – Sligo
130 + 121 1325 Sligo – Dublin Connolly
080 1745 Dublin Heuston – Limerick via Limerick Jn avoiding line.

Monday 12/03/84
Returning to York from a visit to my parents in Plymouth, naturally I chose a train with a 50 on it.
50013 1000 Plymouth – Gloucester (Parcels Platform) via Weston Super Mare
Sadly 50013 was not in the best of health, and the driver decided – quite correctly – that it was unlikely to make it up the Lickey, so we diverted into Gloucester for an unscheduled loco change, which took place in the parcels platform, not the main station.
45150 1410 Gloucester (parcels platform) – Birmingham New Street
86103 1455 Birmingham New Street – Crewe
87016 1619 Crewe – Warrington Bank Quay
47603 1709 Warrington Bank Quay – York
Just about enough time in York to dump my bags then straight back out for a night shift:
45120 2023 York – Leeds

Tuesday 12/03/85
By late afternoon they were often struggling to provide ETH 47s for the Carstairs – Edinburgh portions. Today there was a 37 allocated:
86102 1520 Glasgow Central – Carstairs
37106 1604 Carstairs – Edinburgh
47711 1700 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High

Thursday 12/03/92
It is Cheltenham Gold Cup week, and there is a 37/4 + stock working vice DMU on the Swindon – Gloucester services. I negotiate an early exit from work, and set off to have it:
43144 + 43031 1515 Paddington – Swindon
150 254 Swindon – Gloucester
37430 1754 Gloucester – Swindon
43141 + 43175 1853 Swindon – Reading

Well that's a pretty good way of moving house, as far as the traction is concerned.

Thursday 13th March 1986. Another of my occasional football related European tours, this time in the Northern latitudes, tis posting covers the full trip hence is quite long!.

The main purpose of this trip was to attend a football match, but it stretched to nine days to encompass another consideration of being able to see the northern latitudes in real snow (rather than the leftover snow previously encountered in early summer visits), and setting out just a week before the spring equinox there would be a good amount of daylight in which to enjoy such views, and finally, having previously travelled by train on all but one of the routes planned to be covered on this trip – also both of the ferry routes and the Narvik bus - to travel on one of the routes in Finland I had not been on previously although this was dependant on other elements the outline plan coming together. Unfortunately, I have no detail of the locomotives which worked the various legs, and with the timetable of the day long gone, the times shown are actually taken from the April 1987 Thomas Cook timetable available on ‘Timetable World’ as being the closest match so may have some minor variances from the ‘actual’. And finally, apologies for missing accents from various place names.

Thursday 13th March 1986
Fly Aberdeen to Stavanger with Air UK, the first of the then two daily flights on this route.
Bus to town centre
13.40 Stavanger to Oslo S

Friday 14th March 1986
After a night in a hotel in Oslo, then securing seat and sleeper reservations for later in the day and some sightseeing
14.30 Oslo to Trondheim
22.55 Trondheim to Fauske

Saturday 15th March 1986
As on previous occasions when using the northwards overnight train from Trondheim, I rose from my sleeper berth well ahead of the approach to and crossing of the Arctic Circle where the snow was abundant, and I was now north of the Arctic Circle for a sixth time.
09.40 Bus Fauske to Narvik – initially I found this journey a little alarming as the bus sped along roads covered with hard packed snow. I was re-assured however at the first refreshment or ferry stop when I noticed the length of the studs in the tyres which were providing the grip.
15.35 Narvik to Kiruna – before boarding this train I had telephoned ahead (how many of us have used a public phone box in Narvik?) to secure a hotel bed in Kiruna to avoid the risk of ‘no room at the inn’ in seriously sub zero overnight temperatures, as otherwise I would have insufficient time to cover the ‘required route’ in Finland.

Sunday 16th March 1986
09.10 Kiruna to Boden
14.30 Boden to Haparanda – my recollection is a more modern bogie single railcar was provided rather than the 4 wheel railbus type from previous trips
16.50 Haparanda to Tornio – a five minute journey but crossing into the next time zone it arrives at 17.55 (Finnish time), and this on one of the old faithful 4 wheel railbuses
18.40 Tornio to Kemi
19.50 Kemi to Riihimaki – I was able to purchase a sleeper berth on the train

Monday 17th March 1986
08.23 Riihimaki to Parikkala
12.10 Parikkala to Savonlinna – the first leg of my ‘new’ route, which if I recall correctly was a loco and two coaches
13.30 Savonlinna to Pieksamaki – to complete my ‘new’ route, another ‘railbus’
15.30 Pieksamaki to Turku Harbour, and after less than 28 hours in Finland it was time to cross the Baltic Sea
21.30 Turku to Stockholm – Silja Line Ferry – cabin purchased before boarding

Tuesday 18th March 1986
Taxi to Central station (just 40 minutes between ship arrival and train departure)
07.40 Stockholm C to Storlien
17.10 bus – operated by NSB - Storlein to Trondheim (a previous trip on this route had been by train)
22.30 Trondheim to Oslo S – another night in NSB sleeping car

Wednesday 19th March 1986
07.40 Oslo S to Gothenburg
Stepping off the train in Gothenburg I saw the surprised look on the face of another Aberdeen fan I recognised previous European trips, although I knew he was sufficiently well connected to have travelled on the team charter flight but I had not previously been aware of his interest in railways. IFK Gothenburg 0 Aberdeen 0 – European Cup quarter final second leg. My second visit to the Ullevi Stadium, but sadly without the glory of the 1983 visit. On the face of it 0-0 away from home sounds a good result but unfortunately the first leg – played in much more wintry conditions two weeks previously had ended 2-2 meaning the Swedes progressed under the ‘away goals rule’.
Now I wanted to get to Oslo in time to catch the morning train to Bergen so I headed south!
21.50 Gothenburg to Halmstad. At Halmstad the seated coaches were detached, one sleeper and one couchette from Oslo continued to Hamburg (to be combined with a portion from Stockholm at Helsingborg). The previous year when I travelled on this train from Oslo to Hamburg, as we departed Oslo I had purchased my cheapest ever beer in Norway from the German Sleeping Car attendant as standard DB pricing applied.

Thursday 20th March 1986
00.41 Halmstad to Oslo S – on boarding I was able to purchase a couchette berth on this Copenhagen to Oslo train. This train did not call in Gothenburg at that time, hence my diversion via Halmstad, the southernmost point on the trip.
07.30 Oslo S to Bergen

Friday 21st March 1986
After a night in a hotel in Bergen
07.45 ‘Fast Ferry’ Bergen to Stavanger
Bus to Airport
Stavanger to Aberdeen on the afternoon Air UK flight

My trip over this route was in September 1985, which I will detail at the appropriate time. I recall that alighting from the Swedish train at the border, I overheard some passengers say they were going for a wander as the Finnish train did not depart for over an hour, luckily for them I was able to tell them of the hour's time difference and that the Finnish train was about to go !
