Sunday 23/03/80
After arriving at Edinburgh off 55014, I sought gen on what 40s were working in Scotland. Nil. None. Zero. Cheers then. In desperation I headed over to Glasgow:
47707 1230 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Dalmeny, Winchburgh, Falkirk Grahamston
Over at Glasgow Central, I strolled along the platform to identify whatever was at the head of the 1515 to Nottingham. It was some sort of electric loco, but the noises it was making were very unusual. F*** me, it's an 84!
84003 1515 Glasgow Central – Carlisle
This was my first 84 for haulage for 7 years, and needless to say it was very much required. It was whipped up to a maximum of 104 mph, but was clearly not in the best of health, tripping out and losing power. It was failed on arrival at Carlisle, so I didn't get the chance to have it again on the balancing working back into Glasgow. Instead I headed south:
87006 1725 Carlisle – Preston
This loco was also unwell, 10'->20' late. Failed at Preston (that's two electric failures on the trot), so an 86/2 was attached:
86231 1833 Preston – Crewe, 28' late.
86208 2001 Crewe – Birmingham New Street
86253 2106 Birmingham New Street – Crewe, 43' late.
87025 2316 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly, 10' late.
Not one of the WCML's better days for electric performance.

Monday 23/03/81
50014 1600 Plymouth – Paddington via Westbury
86008 2150 Euston – Mossend (Fort William sleeper portion)

Wednesday 23/03/83
There was a 40 out on the Liverpool – Newcastle circuit, so I negotiated a half-day's leave to go and have it:
40027 1235 York – Newcastle
Sadly, things took a turn for the worse on this train. The communication cord was pulled at Tollerton due to an elderly man having a heart attack. We waited there for an ambulance to arrive from York, and the ambulance crew had to trudge across a field to board the train. After some time the now-dead man's body was taken away, covered in a blanket. We got going again, then had a prolonged stop at Darlington as the police dealt with his distraught wife (who had been unable to descend from the train to travel with her husband). A one-hour late arrival in Newcastle was quite good in the circumstances.
I went on a little Metro bash in Newcastle, going Newcastle Central – Monument – Tynemouth – Benton – St James.
Sadly 40027 didn't reappear for the next leg of the diagram, so I had to resort to "Alternative" traction:
47415 1718 Newcastle – Darlington
47412 2146 Darlington – York

Saturday 23/03/85
Stena Normandica 2140 (+ 5 hours) Rosslare - Fishguard
On my arrival at Fishguard Harbour 5 hours later than planned, the "connecting" rail service had long since departed. Fortunately a replacement bus service had been laid on:
Bus Fishguard Harbour – Haverfordwest
47408 0758 Haverfordwest – Carmarthen
I come all the way to West Wales to do some new track, and am met by a Gateshead Alternator duff!
DMU 0930 Carmarthen – Whitland
33028 1015 Whitland – Milford Haven
33028 1117 Milford Haven – Carmarthen
33014 1223 Carmarthen – Llanelli
47509 1313 Llanelli – Fishguard Harbour
47509 1445 Fishguard Harbour – Carmarthen
My first (rail) visit to Fishguard Harbour, and it has to be another EH duff …
Meanwhile, look what's waiting to re-engine us at Carmarthen:
47408 (again) 1548 Carmarthen – Swansea
I decided that was quite enough of West Wales for the time being and got the hell out of town:
43190 + 43172 1645 Swansea – Cardiff Central
33035 1810 Cardiff Central – Bristol Temple Meads
33026 1915 Bristol Temple Meads – Salisbury
This was notionally a through Cardiff – Portsmouth service, but due to engineering work – mainly involving the level crossing at Brockenhurst - there was a change of stock to a 33 + 4TC at Salisbury:
33101 2039 Salisbury – Southampton via Laverstock North Jn (reverse)
Bus 2220 Southampton – Brockenhurst
3005 (4 REP) Brockenhurst – Bournemouth
33106 2329 Bournemouth – Parkestone
33111 2346 Parkestone – Bournemouth

Thursday 23/03/95
Another steam special, another half day off work:
35028 1331 London Waterloo – Southampton Eastern Docks
This was the launch of the Ocean Liner rake of green stock, and was one of the last excursions organised by BR. I had other commitments so couldn’t do the return trip, so headed off home on a Cross Country HST:
43069 + 43097 1648 Southampton – Reading

THURSDAY 23rd MARCH 1978:

7340/7054/7349 Petersfield-Waterloo (08 50 from Portsmouth Harbour)
4630/4662 Waterloo-Clapham Junction (10 34 to Shepperton)
5677/5107 Clapham Junction-Waterloo (10 49 Waterloo-Waterloo via Richmond and Kingston)
33 052 17 33 London Bridge-East Croydon (to East Grinstead. Consist: S3848/4074/3846/3840/34991/13391/4035/3838 Load 8 AB/EH)

33 118 + 416/417 18 54 Waterloo-Woking (Relief to Exeter SD)
7837/7749 Woking-Petersfield (19 20 Waterloo- Portsmouth Harbour)

I can only assume that I had something else to do in London during the day....maybe spotting at other London Terminals?

SATURDAY 23rd MARCH 1985:

I was at this time a guard at Brighton and was rostered to work a return LMR ADEX from Hastings and Eastbourne to Selhurst, on its way back to Shrewsbury:

I was en route from Scotland to London, so naturally enough I diverted via Manchester to cover the 0055 MO Manchester Victoria – York, booked for a 40:
40117 0055 Manchester Victoria – Leeds
At Leeds an unscheduled loco change took place, as there was a loco which required returning to its home depot for attention:
55002 0218 Leeds – York
55002 was only running on one engine, but since the train was only load 2, it was hardly overtaxed! At York, the last Aberdeen – Kings Cross (which was nominally a set down only stop) produced a required steam heat 47, so I snoozed my way back south behind that:
47268 0337 York – Kings Cross via Selby

Tuesday 24/03/81
I was in the Euston – Fort William sleeper …
47462 0422 Mossend – Cowlairs via Gartsherrie, Gartcosh, Springburn
27112 0444 Cowlairs – Glasgow Queen Street
37114 0600 Glasgow Queen Street – Fort William
37014 1024 Fort William – Mallaig
37114 1603 Mallaig – Glasgow Queen Street
47704 2300 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk High

Sunday 24/03/85
More clueless wandering around the Southern:
3005 0001 Bournemouth – Brockenhurst
Bus Brockenhurst – Southampton
7700 0123 Southampton – Waterloo
So my carefully-selected Weymouth – Waterloo loco-hauled overnight service turned out to be a REP + TC followed by a bus, and then a 4VEP. That wasn't quite what I envisaged.
Taxi Waterloo – Victoria
There was just a chance I could salvage something out of the night, if the 0405 Victoria – Ramsgate was something decent:
73138 0405 Victoria – Ramsgate via Sittingbourne, Faversham, Margate
1532 + 1579 0721 Ramsgate – Victoria
73138 was dud, but at least I did manage to score with one of the Gatwicks:
73105 0915 Victoria – Gatwick Airport
47538 1022 Gatwick Airport – Coventry via Clapham Jn, Kensington Olympia, North Pole Jn., Reading
The booked loco change took place at Coventry, but because of more engineering diversions, it was another ETH 47 that took over rather than the usual electric:
47572 1345 Coventry – Crewe via New Street, Cannock, Stafford
87009 1712 Crewe – Glasgow Central

FRIDAY 25th MARCH 1983:

One of my last weekend trips to London to see my then girlfriend....who was soon to become my ex-girlfriend! For some reason the 16 10 ex-Glasgow was a limited consist hauled by a required Roarer. I wasn't complaining!

47015 1805 York – Reading, return ADEX. Route not known – and no sign of this on the 6 Bells Junction website. Can anybody assist? (Train ran through from / to Paddington).

Tuesday 25/03/80
The 1705 Kings Cross – Hull, the Hull Executive, ran non-stop to Newark Northgate, and was very tightly timed. As such it was a favourite of the Deltic bashers.
55005 1705 Kings Cross – Doncaster
I had the opportunity to travel on the train on my way to Doncaster en route to York, so I sat back and enjoyed a typically fine Deltic journey. Fortunately there was somebody on board who was keeping a log:
http://www.napier-chronicles.co.uk/5_25-3-80.htm#log
The consistency of the driving was exemplary.
55018 2021 Doncaster – York
This ran 15' late, due to the failure of the 1800 Kings Cross – Edinburgh HST.

Wednesday 25/03/81
46004 0008 Edinburgh – Newcastle
55010 0341 Newcastle – Edinburgh
As I was heading south to Newcastle, 40101 stormed by on the 2000 Kings Cross – Aberdeen, which it worked as far as Edinburgh. After a pause for refreshment at Haymarket it came out for the next leg of its diagram,
re-engineing the 2315 Kings Cross – Aberdeen at Edinburgh:
40101 0702 Edinburgh – Aberdeen
At Aberdeen I was delighted to learn that 55012 was en route too, and would go back on the 1240 to Edinburgh:
55012 1240 Aberdeen – Dundee
My first Deltic out of Aberdeen. Just north of Dundee, my pet Deltic 55019 stormed by on the 0550 from Kings Cross to Aberdeen. I had to have it! I alighted at Dundee, and was delighted to find 40113 on the 1335 Glasgow Queen Street – Aberdeen.
Now the dilemma. 40113 was due into Aberdeen at 1630. 55019 was due out of Aberdeen at 1630. Should I go through to Aberdeen and risk the dead connection, or play safe and alight at Stonehaven to be sure of getting 55019 (but not having it out of Aberdeen)?
Well 40113 was running well, so I risked it. We came to a halt just outside Aberdeen station at 1627, and stood there as I watched 55019 depart, for us then to roll into the same platform it had vacated. The Aberdeen station staff had platformed some of the overnight sleeper trains early, so there wasn't a spare platform for us to arrive in. I never did have 55019 to Aberdeen. Still, at least I've got a decent exit lined up:
40113 1750 Aberdeen – Dundee, dropping back onto
40148 1949 Dundee – Edinburgh
This train called at Burntisland, as scheduled. (There was once a Control Office at Burntisland, and when it was closed, part of the redundancy agreement was that an express service would call at Burntisland every evening to convey Controllers to their new place of employment for night shift in Edinburgh. The only person I ever saw use this stop was a well-known local crank).
47517 2340 Edinburgh – Carstairs

Saturday 25/03/95
There were some engineering diversions taking place on international services between Germany and Amsterdam, involving the use of the big class 234 Kolomna diesels all the way to Amsterdam. So I had to give it a go …
43172 + 43028 1730 Reading – Paddington
86246 1900 Liverpool Street – Harwich Parkeston Quay
Ferry to Hoek van Holland

Once again bashing on my West Mids travelcard. Haulage from:

87028, 86439, 90007, 86213, 90002, 86438, 90035 and 87029.

Everything was routed via Bescot, a couple of the services via Soho too. Consult your Baker if this is causing confusion!

I'm probably doing a West Midlands Day Ranger tomorrow. In my Baker, half the freight-only lines in the West Midlands are passenger lines now.

This was another return ADEX, and once again the route details are missing. Can anybody assist? Leeds – Oxford – Bournemouth and return.

Thursday 26/03/81
After my exertions of the previous few days, I dossed so soundly all the way from Edinburgh to somewhere south of Birmingham that I never got the electric loco number. All offers gratefully received!
8xxxx 0041 Carstairs – Birmingham New Street
45130 0700 Birmingham New Street – Bristol Temple Meads

I went home for a little snooze, then word reached me of another 40 working out of Kings Cross on the 2015 to Edinburgh …
40173 2015 Kings Cross – Peterborough
55002 2149 Peterborough – Kings Cross
… and home to bed!

I was working late shift, and found out there was a Glasgow – Aberdeen relief running, and it had a 37 allocated to it:

What was presumably a spotting trip to London with, I guess, a Can on the return.

87007 WBQ to Euston

First time I had a "City" 87 for haulage.

Friday 26th March 1982

Early on in my bashing days and a pleasant early Spring run out along a route I was to become mightily familiar with over the next two years.

40074 WBQ to Rhyl, 1D65 17.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40106 Rhyl to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic

074 was the only 40 I had in England, Scotland and Wales. It also had the honour of being my first 40 recorded for haulage. It wasn't far off being my last either.

Saturday 26th March 1983

AC Day. A few cans missing. Don't know what services the Roarers were on...or even where they actually slot in. A bit of guess work...

85040 WBQ to Crewe
87026 Crewe to Preston, 1S53 08.10 Birmingham to Glasgow
87010 Preston to WBQ, 1A35 09.20 Blackpool to Euston
87011 Crewe to Preston, 1S59 09.35 Euston to Inverness
87013 Preston to Crewe, 1M27 11.15 Glasgow to Birmingham
87019 Crewe to Preston, 1S71 14.05 Birmingham to Glasgow
87034 Preston to WBQ, 1A75 14.33 Carlisle to Euston
87027 WBQ to Wigan NW, 1P63 14.00 Euston to Carlisle
85024 Lancaster to Preston

Wednesday 26th March 1986

Home for Easter, I guess...

86231 Wolves to Crewe, 1F** 10.48 Birmingham Int to Liverpool
86249 Crewe to WBQ, 1S39 07.34 Poole to Glasgow/Edinburgh

Tuesday 26th March 1991

47710 Oxford to Paddington, 10.00 Oxford to Paddington
47*** Paddington to Oxford, 21.15 Paddington to Oxford

The reason for this trip is lost in the mists of time, although I do know my wife was 5 months pregnant with our first daughter. It may have been a theatre visit. Still seems odd to have a shove duff outside Scotland.

I attended both days of a diesel weekend at the Great Central. Easy to do when you are within walking distance.

Locos were D5401, D7018, D8098 and D9019. I had a good few runs behind number 19.

Having arrived at Leeds on the return ADEX from Oxford, I had to make my way home to York. A required steam-heat 47 seemed the best on offer:
47222 0040 Leeds – Doncaster
47523 0136 Doncaster – York via Selby
Then after a day in college, it was time for some more.
45022 1706 Leeds – York
47485 1735 York – Leeds
47130 1857 Leeds – York
This was a relief service, on which I had pinned my hopes of getting a 40.
46010 1925 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – York
All four of the afternoon / evening locos were new for haulage.

Tuesday 27/03/79
I turned up at York and bought myself a student return to Newcastle for £4.98p, then settled down behind 55006 on the 2000 Kings Cross – Aberdeen (continued tomorrow).

Thursday 27/03/80
43xxx + 43xxx 1804 York - Kings Cross via Selby
My first run with an HST throughout from York to Kings Cross – and I didn't bother recording the number.
86224 2130 Euston – Crewe

Saturday 27/03/82
There was a schoolboys' international football match at Wembley Stadium, and 40081 was allocated to work the return leg of a charter from Chester forward from Wolverhampton:
85023 1710 Euston – Wolverhampton
40081 1918 Wolverhampton – Shrewsbury – Crewe
The train terminated at Shrewsbury, then ran ECS to Crewe via Chester, Mickle Trafford, Middlewich and Sandbach, which was some pretty good track. Middle road leap at Crewe. 40081 was next allocated to 1G00 the 0407 (Sun) Crewe – Birmingham New Street, but the boiler failed, so it was deallocated.

Wednesday 27/03/85
47706 1530 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk High
37017 1733 Edinburgh – Kings Park FOOTEX via Shotts, Newton
EMU Kings Park – Glasgow Central

Thursday 27/03/86
I had arrived at Aberdeen with 37263 from Glasgow Queen Street, and was hopeful of picking up another 37 on the Inverness – Aberdeen line. Not at first though:
47209 0440 Aberdeen – Elgin
37262 0646 Elgin – Inverness
37261 0832 Inverness – Aberdeen
47716 1105 Aberdeen – Glasgow Queen Street
So a nice numerical sequence, having 37263, 37262 and 37261.

Monday 27/03/95
After a day spent chasing Kolomna diesels across the Netherlands, I did the night boat back to Harwich, then:
86223 0750 Harwich Parkeston Quay – Liverpool Street
… and straight into work at Paddington.

A trip to York. The plan was to return via the ECML to Grantham with Deltic haulage, but they seemed a bit thin on the ground. Only the up and down Flying Scotsman, and two northbound workings were noted with Deltics.

It was pretty strange for us down here when they started appearing on the line.
One of those rumours that ended up turning into reality…
