Interesting, I never remember the Poole XCs being diverted up the Direct in the 80s (and I lived close to, albeit not within walking distance of, the Direct at the time). Admittedly I rarely used, or observed, the railway on Sundays. Did it happen often?

Was that a personal mission or representing your then employer?

A personal mission. My employer at that time was BR Southern Region, Central Division and I was a guard based at Brighton.

Not sure....as I was living/working on the Isle of Wight at that time and didn't go to the mainland all that often. On this occasion I was en route to Heathrow Airport - via the Woking Airlink coach service - to catch a flight to Rome, where my parents were living at the time. I had advance gen that a Woking driver with whom I was very friendly (now long since retired and passed away) was working the diverted 1E63 from Havant to Reading.

# Got on this train after 33108, it moved along the platform and stopped (way before 0155 departure), got gripped and was chucked off as told ticket not valid before 9am! Jumped back on 33108!
## Walked onto Salisbury station eating Fish and Chips and saw this in the middle island platform, realised it was required and ran down the subway and made it with 0 seconds to spare!! 50047 was withdrawn a few days later, if i hadn't have made it i wouldn't have had it!
### Great way to finish the rover - 33015 was on this late running Exeter-Waterloo service

So today I used one of my "free" days on the KWVR. Haulage from Standard 4 75078 and non-standard Gronk D0226.

Taff Vale 85 also put in an appearance, having a test run double heading with the 4, but I stuck with the diesel.

Between trains I had time for a pint in the Old Parcels Office at Keighley. Landlord and Saltaire Blonde on the hand pumps; I chose the former. Plenty in there not observing a Good Friday fast and tucking in to their lunch.

All that, plus glorious sunshine. I thought it was meant to rain on Bank Holidays?

Even more likely with two bank holidays so close together. Don't know what on earth is going on with this weather.

Unfortunately I didn't record the name of the ferry and was unable to obtain the numbers of the locos which shunted us on and off it at VSG and Messina, but they were the ex-USA Army Transportation Corps Whitcomb-built class D143 centre-cab locos which were brought to Italy at the time of the 1943 Allied invasion during World War 2.
