The Aberdeen sleeper’s scheduled departure from York was approximately 2330 but unsurprisingly it was gone midnight before it left with a single Class 31. I presume it didn’t get any further than Newcastle. Taking Deltic 8 to London, I headed over to Paddington with the plan for a quick return trip to Reading. 50011 was required, however it was first stop Swindon which meant I would have to return by an HST. It also meant that I would only have a short amount of time to get back to Kings Cross before the 1220 departure to York. At the time I thought I was fortunate that the HST arrived into Paddington on time and that I managed to catch the 1220 with a few minutes to spare. I later found out that day that if I had missed the train I would have been in prime position to catch the 1305 to Cleethorpes which today was Deltic hauled. Cleethorpes with a Deltic had eluded me thus far and I found that this would become a difficult destination for me behind a Deltic.

My regular evening Deltic bash was a return trip from York to Newark. I had already seen No.6 earlier in the day on its outward leg to Liverpool, so I had a welcome change of a return journey to Newcastle. At this time the 2030 to KX wasn’t booked a Deltic so I was extremely happy to have a Deltic out and back.

The 2255 Newcastle-Kings Cross was a sleeper only service between Newcastle and Doncaster where seating accommodation was added from the 0050 Leeds portion. I sneaked into the front BG between York and Doncaster, where I was then able to move into the seating accommodation; I don’t think anyone noticed me! Later in the day I believed that there was a large number of Deltics in London and thought that the 1305 to Cleethorpes had a good chance of being one. I waited at Newark only to be disappointed to see a 47 on the service to Cleethorpes. Only another hour to wait to pick up the 1405 service to York!

Trip taking my 7 year old son to see the delights of London, turned into the delights of Nottingham. Visited St.Pancras and there was a Millwall footex with a 45 on the front. On the barrier they were selling return tickets for £5, so couldnt resist. As son was with me I had no trouble convincing the BTP at Nottingham that we were visiting the city and not the football.

This was the third time that I travelled on the 0114 to Milford, unfortunately for the first time a class 47 snook in at Swansea instead of the preferred class 37. I was also bowled by a class 46 on my return from Pontypool, I had been expecting the booked class 25. Later in the day 50032 expired just south of Gloucester. I was a little disappointed but unsurprised by the rescue loco 46036. Coincidentally the previous time I’d had this loco for haulage it had failed on me, however that is a story for another day.
