Ignoring changes due to engineering works how many TOCs run virtually normal weekday services on the various Monday bank holidays? I can't see many people catching 04:45 LNER from Newcastle to Peterborough, the 04:50 TPE Newcastle to Liverpool or the 05:00 Greater Anglia Norwich to London Liverpool Street. Avanti's first services on the other hand are much later than a normal weekday. It doesn't look like there is much logic in the services operated.

Most long distance TOCs operate weekday times and have done for some years (in ye olden days there was a peculiar arrow-tail symbol for BHX services, the peak Executive/Pullmans etc). Regional Railways successors likewise.
London and SE routes have gradually moved from Sunday to Saturday services.

Today, Avanti seem to have cut a handful of early services in England (it's not a BH in Scotland anyway) but that may be due to engineering work at Euston.

LNER used to bin off the Scotsman along with a couple of others aimed mostly at Business travel - but it seems today the Scotsman is actually running!

Think it’s just easier to leave crew/unit diagrams as booked regardless of whether certain trains carry anybody. The first Sheringham service (05:12 ex-Norwich/06:18 return) carried 4 and 10 passengers respectively this morning. Thats more than I’d usually expect on a Bank Holiday.

Generally any services which run as AM/PM Peak Extras (on top of the normal clockface service) probably won't run at most TOC's

I remember NYD 2016 when TPE decided to run an 0708 Newcastle to Liverpool. I think about three of us were on board, one of whom was a bedraggled reveller. No other TOC was mad enough to run before 9 but for some reason TPE were keen

I have noticed at Reading that GWR run pretty much a Mon-Fri service, yet the Elizabeth line runs a Saturday service This causes long gaps in service to Slough which is not served by GWR in the morning peak, meanwhile the Elizabeth Line is only half hourly on its Saturday timetable

Haha yes I’ve seen similar so many times. Only annoying thing is being at work when I could’ve been cut out early or stayed in bed.

Plenty of people do work bank holidays, at my workplace you can even choose to work it and take an alternative day off instead if you so desire!

I've also done quite a bit of leisure travel before where it can be nice to complete the outward journey as early as possible then make a full day out of things at the destination, it does amaze me sometimes how much you can pack into a single day when you put your mind to it!

Leeds - Manchester Airport overnight services are always amusing in that you have some passengers looking forward to getting home to their bed in Huddersfield after a night on the town whilst some passengers are looking forward to their exotic holiday somewhere :D

Merseyrail operates a Saturday service on Bank Holidays, which is similar to the normal Monday to Friday timetable, minus the peak extras.

Yesterday I checked the passenger train frequency at Finsbury Park between 10am-11am and it was the exact same as last Friday!

Most places around London & SE tend to run a Saturday timetable without peak extras.

So that means between 1000-1600, you'd probably not notice the difference to a Monday-Friday.

The Scoti do not enjoy a late August bank holiday. Plus it is the end of the festival

Surely today wasn't a Bank Holiday in Scotland.
Even if it was, ScotRail would’ve run a full timetable.

Only Xmas Day and New Year’s Day, when there is no service, and 2nd January, which is something between a Saturday or Sunday service depending on the route, and with a mid-morning start, do they alter timetables.
