Hi all hope you are all well.

Hopefully this is in the correct section! I am starting training with southern and will be based in Barnham once out on the rails. I had the induction yesterday and it seems to be once booked on the drivers than travel elsewhere to start their service. (Chichester was the example given) and they state alot of people use taxis.

Anyways, I'm about to apply for my 3 parking permits so wondering if anyone else here is Barnham based and could recommend the best stations to get parking. I'm guessing I will be able to catch trains to where I'm going so this will realy only be needed for if I'm one the first or last service of the day.

Or are taxis the best bet? Do the company reimburse for any taxis used?

Thanks in advance

Crew taxis are booked and diagrammed (and paid for) by the company. You make your way to your depot and everything else is taken care of. (Some TOCs have local agreements where the business pays to pick you up from home to the depot too)

Your parking should be based around the stations you are likely to use to commute into work or for leisure journeys.

Being based at Barnham I would suggest Barnham and Littlehampton. Depending on where you live Bognor Regis might be a wise idea, so you could head straight home from there rather than pass / taxi back to Barnham to pick your car up.

Aahhh OK that's makes sense!! Thankyou! Yeah so I know Barnham Little Hampton and I think west Worthing is all one permit. So il get that and I guess Chichester... just unsure about the 3rd. I know three bridges is the end of the barnham core route but how often il finish/start there I guess is slim.

I would suggest Three Bridges is not required as the business is responsible for getting you from your home depot to your train, and to get you back to your home depot at the end of your shift. Like I say, depending on where you live it might be mutually beneficial to strategically park your car somewhere else but don’t feel like you have to. My knowledge of GTR Southern workings is limited, but I know a lot of the units are berthed (stored) overnight at Bognor and Littlehampton which is why I suggested those places. Without being nosey may I ask what the closest large station to you is, and is there a closer small station / halt? It would make sense to pick those stations (if you live away from Barnham) to enable you to drive to the station and commute in by train (however this depends on your start and finish times on that particular day, no point parking at Chichester on a late shift if there’s then no trains scheduled for you to travel back on to collect your car etc)

Thank you this is all very informative that's reassuring that taxis are arranged by work. I'm sure il find out more this week.

So my closest big station is brighton but that one we can't get parking for (im guessing its taken up by brightkn staff) Barnham also includes Littlehampton and one of the worthing stations so that's a must. My 2nd I'm thinking my home station which is Horsham. Just unsure about the 3rd permit, Bognor sounds like a good shout though. It's more of a dilemma than I was expecting

Just to be clear if your last train was due to be worked at three bridges for example, unless there was no trains available or engineering work it would most likely be diagrammed to pass back to Barnham on a train, they won't taxi you back to the depot during normal hours.
You will always be digrammed to finish at your home depot but not all of your trains will finish at Barnham so if it works out better to finish somewhere else and you can get home quicker by parking your car somewhere then you can do that but until you see the diagrams you won't know where that will be unfortunately. Horsham may be a good shout of its your closest but then it will depend on where your finishing that day, If you're first train starts at Barnham but you finish at horsham you could park your car at horsham and get the train down to Barnham for your first start depending on the times but like I say without knowing the diagrams for that depot it's hard to say. If you park at horsham they won't get you a taxi to Barnham.

If they park at Horsham and are booked to taxi back to Barnham the taxi will be provided by the business (if no “pass” trains are available) however a simple courtesy call to the resource manager to cancel the taxi goes down well.

Agreed with all the other parts of your post.

Good luck with the training!

I’m not sure who you’ve been talking to but it’s time for a reset!
You'll book on at Barnham and book off at Barnham! It’s that simple.
If you need to go to Littlehampton or Bognor for your 1st train then the company will supply the taxi! If you finish there and there’s no trains then they’ll get you a taxi!
Barnham, Littlehampton and Bognor is 1 choice for permits! I’d suggest you also get a permit for your nearest station if you’re planning on getting the train into work! If not then go for somewhere you’ll use a lot like Chichester or arundel for free parking purposes!
ps….. you won’t get a permit for Three Bridges! I know staff that are based there and they can’t even get it!

Just seen you’re Horsham as location! It’s worth getting that on the permit! You don’t have to have a 3rd choice and at the moment some managers are scrutinising people’s choices and asking why you need it!

That’s pretty much what myself and the other responder were saying.
