Have left it far too late to get advanced tickets for easter but can anyone find a good way to bring the cost down by splitting etc for the following:
Travel is for 2 adults, sadly the only railcard is an Annual Gold card (so might apply to part of the journey).
Basingstoke to Lancaster (willing to go via London or Birmingham and via Manchester if necessary).
We can't travel until after 13:00 on Friday 6th and return sometime (preferably afternoon) on Tuesday 10th.

There's some decent-priced (£27pp STD/£37pp 1st) Advance tickets available for LAN-EUS on the return leg. These could be coupled with "saver half" tickets (Off-Peak Singles) if bought on the Virgin website. Then all that remains is to get an Off-Peak Return from BSK to London using the Gold Card.

Thanks calc7. Went with that. Was still ridiculous at £137 for two people (wish they would hurry up rolling out the Two Together RailCard) but at least i am moving back north soon.

Not as good as calc7's suggestion but if you don't like going in and out of London try these splits which should be around £100 if any advances are left:

Basingstoke - Oxford or Bicester Town
Oxford or Bicester North - Birmingham
Birmingham - Lancaster

Don't forget their gold card discount is available until Banbury, which can be a good place to split.

Where is the gold card to? Assuming London for a moment then we may only need to look for fares from Reading depending on the routing of the season.

I would suggest using gold card to London if applicable and gold card discount to somewhere like Long Buckley on the network card boundary and go from there with any extra tickets.
