Apologies if this been covered before.

I travel form Basingstoke to Z1 some days a week. I buy a ticket for Basingstoke to Waterloo and then use my Oyster card for the Z1 travel.

I see there are yellow Oyster card points at Basingstoke station. Can I use my Oyster card at Basingstoke for the Basingstoke to Waterloo journey as well?

I don't have any travel cards or season tickets, all my travel is pay as you go.

TIA

Duncan

Welcome to the forum :)

These are not Oyster readers.

No.

In order to "integrate" (*cough*) public transport in this country, we have separate non-integrated schemes which are not compatible with each other, and any passengers who make genuine mistakes regarding this lack of compatibility may be liable to be charged a Penalty Fare.

See http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/integrated%20bus-rail%20smart%20ticketing%20initiative%20launched.aspx

The new pilot involves a small number of South West Trains season ticket holders travelling between Basingstoke and any smartcard enabled station outside the London area.

No, you cannot.

They are not oyster card readers, they are ITSO readers, which are intended for use with smartcards issued by individual franchises, such as Southern's key smartcard.
SWT also do a smartcard, although details seem to be a bit thin on the ground, and I think that it will only be offered to some season ticket holders.

Edit: Too slow, See Yorkie's better answer.

Thanks Guys - that explains why I can't find any info about it.
They could at least have made them look different.

Maybe one day. :(

In a few years you'll probably be able to use them to validate pre-paid products for a through journey from Basingstoke to Zone 1, but whether this will actually be any cheaper is unknown.

I am not convinced we will ever see true 'Pay As You Go' availability, without any need to pre-load any product/ticket onto a card, for your whole journey.

They are very different, and I doubt anyone without presumptions would easily mistake them for Oyster readers. In addition, if you do attempt to touch in with an Oyster card, it will not be accepted and send out a warning sound. That said, they could have used a different colour for the target area to differentiate it a bit more.

As for "one day", you may have a heck of a wait I reckon. The industry (and the DfT for that matter) are not known for doing things promptly and if so, not often to a good standard.
