Looking at how delayed the South Wales Metro project seems to be getting; would it have been a better idea to have just have battery trains that could charge at terminal stations (or perhaps a few miles on the route that was electrified to top it up), rather than bothering with all this discontinuous electrification?

That would be a grand idea other Mr Martin ;)
The infrastructure to do so is certainly on its way with the Coventry VLR and it would make more sense.

How much of the delay is down to electrification and how much is down to the reinstatement of several sections of double track on all three branches north of Pontypridd, decades after the previous double track was singled? You need that double track either way.

I seem to recall that the amount of electrification has already been reduced to match revised battery capability.
