Wasn't sure where to put this one.....

One of the most interesting parts of the BBC website for me is/was the 'On This Day' section. I went back to it today having not viewed it for a few years now and all playable media seems to have gone, it just gives a 404 error. An example can be found when you click the 'Play Video' button on the following page:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/october/4/newsid_2486000/2486817.stm

Does anyone know if the good old BBC have removed this content completely or is just redirecting incorrectly? Is there anyone 'techy' enough to notice anything in the source of the pages that might point to this content still existing?

From memory, video content for On This Day was hosted in RealMedia format, which is practically obsolete these days. It wouldn't surprise me if the BBC had decommissioned an old streaming server somewhere, with OTD not really getting enough traffic for anyone to notice.

It might have been removed as part of the website cuts they've been ordered to make recently?

On This Day was got rid of archived years ago, must be best part of a decade ago, which meant the pages stayed as they were, but nobody was to work on them or maintain them.

It's just one site in the great list of useful sites the BBC used to have before it was naughty of them for doing things that people wanted.

Have you checked Youtube to see if they have the video on there?
