Err, I'd sorely love to know too - I know you can book Edinburgh - Inverness via Aberdeen and get an Edinburgh - Inverness fare. I don't know if that is actually allowed, however.

The consensus from an earlier thread Glasgow - Inverness ticket valid via Aberdeen suggested that travel via Aberdeen or via Perth were both acceptable.

So if I am starting at Berwick, can I travel out via Perth and back via Aberdeen?
I think that for most or all internal Scottish journeys to Inverness from the south of Scotland there will be 'via Aviemore' or 'any permitted' options. Aberdeen is a permitted route to Inverness providing that the ticket is not specifically 'via Aviemore'. I'm not sure what tickets are available from Berwick, but if it's routed 'any permitted' then you're fine.

Yes. The calculation is:
Routeing Points for Berwick-upon-Tweed are Edinburgh and Newcastle. The fares check shows that Edinburgh is the appropriate RP for a Berwick-upon-Tweed - Inverness journey.
Inverness is a Routeing Point.
Permitted routes Edinburgh - Inverness are on maps EI or IS.
Map IS allows travel via Aberdeen or Aviemore.

Edinburgh - Inverness has route Aviemore and route Any Permitted.
Dunbar - Inverness has route Aviemore only.
Berwick-upon-Tweed - Inverness has route Any Permitted only.
