-- Newport does seem to be getting a lot of stick in this thread. ".

Generally based on people's experiences.
Part of a night out in Newport appears to involve having a punch up somewhere along the way.
Every time I've been there have altercations between people in pubs - full blown brawls a couple of times.
My undying image of the town was of a tawdry bint remonstrating and pushing a bouncer outside the Wetherspoons by the station because they wouldn't let her in - nothing unremarkable about that apart from the fact she had a toddler she was dragging around by the hand and she didn't notice the child chewing on the pile of dog ends she had just dragged it through.

Mmm -- not nice !

There comes to mind the traditional daft song -- with dozens of verses -- supposedly about the prominent 19th-century industrialist Crawshay Bailey, and his large family and their odd doings; one verse of same:

Crawshay Bailey's brother Rupert
He played stand-off-half for Newport;
When they played against Llanelli,
Someone kicked him in the belly.

Re this stuff, it's maybe a case of "there's nothing new..."
