I have reached the point where I need to seriously consider using a cloud storage platform to store / backup my numerous photos but I find the information on which is the best platform to use confusing.

I was wondering what platform other forum members use / would recommend?

At the moment most of my images are stored as JPEG files and are held either on my current laptop, external drives or CD's. I would like to be able to combine them all into one storage location and be able to easily cross reference / search etc without having to put multiple copies of one image into numerous named files.

thanks.

Google Photos. I've used it for years, it automatically backs up from my phone and PC (via Google Backup and Sync). You can search and sort into albums. It may be a bit of a faff when initially starting off but any service will be.

They've recently changed the free storage options, so check what the limits are

I prefer Microsoft's OneDrive myself, far better then Google but then again that's personal preference.

I think you should consider whether you really want to be pulling things from cloud storage all the time.
In reality I find them all to be a bit slow and if you have more than a few gigabytes it's not cheap.

My advice would be:
  • Buy a large external USB hard drive. You can get multi-terabyte ones for well under £100 now which should be sufficient for thousands and thousands of photos. Put all your photos on there.
  • Use a suitable piece of software for managing them. Personally I highly recommend DigiKam, which is a free piece of software for Windows, Linux and Mac computers. It allows you to assign tags, a title and a description to every photo in your collection, and it keeps track of all of your photos so that you can easily search through them by any of that data.
  • If you want your photos to be available in the cloud then back up that external storage medium to whatever cloud storage provider works best for you. All of the major providers have a piece of software which will keep these things automatically backed up, but a company which specialises specifically in backups is BackBlaze, which offers unlimited storage for US$60 per year.
This is a bit more complex to set up but I vastly prefer the result to be honest.
