That’s a great collection and quite ambitious! I will look at this and give a considered response in a few days. Some really scenic routes in Devon.

The 5B (since renumbered 315) used to be, by far, my favourite route in Devon when Stagecoach ran it with double deckers - an immensely pleasant run with fantastic scenery for the entire journey between Exeter and Barnstaple.

Since being transferred to Go Devon Bus (along with a handful of other routes), gone are the double deckers which is genuinely really sad to see. Of course the route itself isn't any different, but I can't imagine the journey is as pleasant as it used to be.

The 75A (since renumbered 317) between Okehampton and Bideford is also a fantastic, incredibly rural route.

Likewise the 346 - really lovely rural route, but was better when it was the 155 operated straight through from Barnstaple to Exeter.

To be honest, Devon is a fantastically beautiful county so there aren't any real duffers there. However, you're going to have to fit in quite a number of days to get all of those in. There are some that are handy links that, IMHO, aren't quite as scenic (like the 155 and X38) whilst the X22 is a handy link if you need it but if you're doing the Exeter 1, then you're probably getting the most scenic bits anyway.

Also, I'd suggest you go to Appledore rather than Westward Ho! - much nicer place to spend an hour though if you're so minded, you can get off at one and walk to the other.

BTW, Sunseeker is apparently being replaced for 2023 by an extended Exmoor Coaster from Minehead to Ilfracombe

It certainly looks an ambitious list!

If you could allow one venture over the border into Somerset, might I suggest the Exmoor Explorer from Lynton to Minehead. You'll already be in Lynton either from Barnstaple or Ilfracombe, and I see from the above poster that the Ilfracombe bus is to be extended to Minehead. I suppose you could alight at County Gate if you're being strict with your boundaries, but its such an excellent route all the way to Minehead.

Then I hope they use their open-top dds all the way, rather than those open-back single deckers!
You need a dd to see over those Devon hedgerows!

Yes, some of these routes will be done this summer, and others will be done next summer, hoping they stay (which I'm sure they will!)

I only wanted to go to Westward Ho! because of the weird place name (having an exclamation mark at the end for a village).

I've done the Exmoor Coaster! It's a fantastic route, and you get to see South Wales (around Cardiff to Bridgend iirc) too!

That's good news! I do hope the route is more frequent too unlike the current SUNSEEKER which was sometimes every hour but mostly every two hours.

It depends what you are trying to do, where you are staying and how the timings work out. Central Devon countryside is nice, but it is the same after several hours. The coast and Exmoor / Dartmoor are the interesting bits or may be routes containing 3 point turns like 20 and 157. I try to take breaks at places of interest in preference to just miles covered. Many of the routes are not frequent (like 3-5 jrns a day) so linking them gets challenging. Recent changes have seen several routes remain, but at reduced frequency for example at Axminster the 30 is every 90mins and 44A every 120mins, when they were both every 60mins.

899 Seaton/Beer - Sidmouth would join 885 to 157 via narrow lanes or 9A as a dd fast on the main road.
99 Taunton- Chard or 20 Taunton-Honiton-Seaton are across the hills on lanes rather than 30 or X22 around the hills on main roads.
The 44A is along the A35/old A30 which is pleasant but unremarkable.

As an aside it's interesting to see buses being renumbered into what, I believe, is something similar to the old Western National numbering scheme - in the sense that North Devon had routes around 300 in NBC days (source: old North Devon timetable from 1982 on Timetable World). It seems to go against the grain of using lower numbers for bus routes since deregulation.

The open back singles are going to Weymouth for the Sunseeker 13 (503).

I would personally not do the 22, I used it in 2021 over the summer between Dawlish Warren and Paignton and return while staying in the area, it seemed to cover just about every road in South Devon, stopping every couple of minutes, there is no real scenery to speak of except between Dawlish and Teignmouth either.

I think painful sums up the 22 and I usually enjoy long routes.

The summer only open top 222 which duplicates the 22 between Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth is well worth it though, it's very relaxing and there is some lovely sea views from the top deck.

When you say 21C Barnstaple to Braunton I presume you will include the further section of the coastal stretch to Saunton, Croyde village, Croyde Beach and possibly on to Georgeham?

I meant the other terminus of the 21C, and yes, the whole route end to end from Barnstaple

I wanted to give this request serious consideration hence the slow response, I was out on a trip on Tuesday (report to follow) and in a board meeting all yesterday. I have done many of these routes and – as said elsewhere – pretty much all of Devon is good – so here goes.

· 1 (Tavistock - Plymouth)
OK, quite decent on the edge of the moors

· 1 (Exeter - Tiverton)
OK in the country sections, the best bit was the long way from Cullompton to Tiverton via Uffculme which has been hived off to the 373 which is better.

· 2 (Newton Abbot - Exeter)
Good, especially the coastal sections

· 3 (Plymouth - Kingsbridge)
Good, passes through some good villages. Continues seamlessly into the 93.

· 6 (Okehampton - Bude),
Attractive rural route with deckers, Holsworthy is an attractive town worth a visit.

· 6A (Exeter - Okehampton)
OK, goes along the ‘old road’ paralleling the A30, not that dramatic

· 7 (Totnes - Exeter)*
OK Totnes to Newton Abbot

· 12 (Newton Abbot - Brixham)
Very busy and frequent route, quite slow but attractive places. Brixham well worth a visit.

· 21 (Ilfracombe - Westward Ho!)
Good. As been suggested before Appledore is a lovely spot and is probably more interesting than Westward Ho! But good if you can manage both to include the exclamation mark!

· 21C (Barnstaple - Georgeham)
Very good beyond Braunton, the area around Croyde Bay is lovely. One suggestion is to walk from Croyde Bay to Woolacombe, takes about an hour, largely along the beach, then see 31 below

· 22 (Dawlish Warren - Paignton)**
Good Dawlish to Babbacombe (edge of Torquay) – worth stopping off here, rather urban after that and goes a long way round.

· 25 (Plymouth City Centre Circular)
Yes – the must-do route in Plymouth, stop off at Barbican and/or the Hoe

· 30 (Taunton - Axminster)
Rather away from the others, bit of a main road run, but OK.

· 34 (Plymouth City Centre - The George Park & Ride)
Royal William Yard is good, also takes in Torpoint, I don’t know beyond that

· 39 (Newton Abbot - Exeter)
Good, Bovey Tracey and Chudleigh are reasonably attractive. If it is the right time of year the 271 links into it at Bovey Tracey and heads into serious Dartmoor at Widecombe in the Moor.

· 44A (Axminster - Exeter)
OK, the towns on route (eg Ottery St Mary) are OK, pleasant rural scenery but not spectacular

· 49 (Plymouth - Heybrook)
I don’t know this one. Maybe combine with the 48 to Wembury, not sure.

· 55 (Exeter - Tiverton)
Busy main road route, Bickleigh is pretty, not much else.

· 57 (Exeter - Exmouth)
Good. Topsham is an attractive village on the route. The train is a good parallel alternative and allows a visit to Lympstone which is lovely.

· 59 (The George Park & Ride - Plymouth City Centre)
Never done this one, looks potentially attractive

· 92 (Dartmouth - Totnes)
Good. Dartmouth is lovely.

· 93 (Kingsbridge - Dartmouth)
Excellent scenery and dramatic along the coastal stretch, runs through with the 3. Used to be reliably deckers but now it isn’t, although some journeys are on schooldays, worth seeing if you can organise to take one of these.

· 94 (Plymouth - Noss Mayo)
Not done this but pleasant countryside. You definitely get to see the sea at Newton Ferrers.

· 118 (Okehampton - Tavistock)
One of the very best – stunning Dartmoor scenery. Absolute must.

· 120 (Paignton - Kingswear)
OK, worth going to Kingswear to take the ferry to/from Dartmouth. Might be better to take the 18 from Brixham to Kingswear, better scenery than the 120 (although 120 is usually deckers)

· 125 (Paignton - Stoke Gabriel)
Attractive but not sure how much, if at all, you see the sea if you aren’t getting off, and two hours is probably too long to spend here. That’s the trouble with some of these rural routes to or near the sea.

· 155 (South Molton - Barnstaple)
OK, quite busy, reasonable villages en route but not spectacular, South Molton is OK

· 157 (Exmouth - Sidmouth)
Scenic, good route. Doesn’t go very near the sea at Budleigh Salterton, maybe worth taking half an hour here (with 357)

· 164 (Totnes - Salcombe)
Gorgeous, spend some time in Salcombe! Maybe even get the ferry across the bay and back again.

· 178 (Okehampton - Newton Abbot)
Attractive route both north and south of Moretonhampstead, reasonable views of Dartmoor hills to the west.

· 219 (Hartland - Bude)
Excellent rural scenery even on the main road.

· 310 (Lynton - Barnstaple)
Very attractive run. Worth walking down to Lynmouth (much less work than walking back up!) – or take the antique cable car.

· 315 (Barnstaple - Exeter)
Was better in Stagecoach days as the 5B, always deckers. Lovely scenery in the middle section, quite open, empty and green

· 319 (Barnstaple - Hartland)
Attractive run, often deckers. Clovelly worth a stop provided you know what to expect…

· 345 (Okehampton - Exeter)
Again was better in Stagecoach days at the 5A with deckers. Also attractive. Hatherleigh is pleasant.

· 346 (Tiverton - South Molton)
Good rural route – yet again was better with Stagecoach deckers as the 155, but pleasant.

· 398 (Dulverton - Tiverton)
Really good rural backwater route. If you can combine it with the 198 on from Dulverton to Minehead that is pretty spectacular on the Exmoor section (esp the journeys via Winsford). Used to be a through route, sadly those days long gone.

· 885 (Beer - Axminster)
Good route. Seaton is OK but Beer is a little gem of a village. All the Axe Valley routes are good but, as suggested in post 7) do try the 899 from Seaton to Beer to Sidmouth, this goes through impossibly narrow lanes and does include views over to the coast in the south.

· X22 (Tiverton - Taunton)
Bit of a main road service but Wellington is OK

· X38 (Plymouth - Exeter)
Another main road service, Ashburton & Buckfastleigh are good but it barely touches the latter.

· Dartmoor Explorer (Exeter - Gunnislake)
Outstanding – absolute must, at least between Moretonhampstead and Tavistock. The section on to Exeter is quite slow but attractive but the Dartmoor bit is spectacular.

· Gold (Plymouth - Paignton)
Busy route, OK, Totnes is a very attractive town.

· Sunseeker (Ilfracombe - Lynton)
Very good. Be interesting if there are deckers on it this year…

OTHERS

31 Ilfracombe to Woolacombe, an attractive area, Woolacombe is good and, as suggested, you can walk there from Croyde Bay.

75, 317 south out of Bideford to Torrington and Okehampton are good, also the 71 and 72 from Barnstaple to Torrington

88 Totnes to Newton Abbot via Ashburton and Buckfastleigh, attractive mid Devon scenery and pleasant towns to stop off in

899 Seaton to Sidmouth – see 885 above

Exmoor Coaster, Minehead to Lynmouth, obviously, stunning scenery, but I know you have done it before.

To dip your toe into Cornwall you could take a 70/70A from Plymouth across the ferry and round the coast to Cremyll, then get a ferry back.

They take more planning but Devon still has a handful of obscure once-a-week services, so if you can tie one of these in somewhere you may well get some even more rural scenery. Some terminate in the middle of nowhere but there are others you can work in such as the 870 on Tuesdays between Crediton and Tiverton.

Have a great time!

I take it the open-top 49B to Babbacombe doesn't exist anymore? ;)

If travelling on service 93 travel from Dartmouth to Kingsbridge as the views are more spectacular, especially after you leave Strete. Sorry to say you will not see the sea from Newton Ferres on the 94. You can walk along the cliff from the 49 to the 48 which is hourly. The 34 in Plymouth will only take you to the ferry on the Devonport side. If you step off the 25 on The Barbican do visit The Dolphin genuine old fashion pub.

· 346 (Tiverton - South Molton)

Really good rural backwater route. If you can combine it with the 198 on from Dulverton to Minehead that is pretty spectacular on the Exmoor section (esp the journeys via Winsford). Used to be a through route, sadly those days long gone.

I forgot to say I'm also doing the 20 from Taunton to Seaton, operated by Dartline Coaches. Is that also good? Forgot the 20 runs a bit in Devon lol

Additonal Open top Enviro deckers have arrived in Somerset for these and have been vinyled this week. These will work alongside the 2 Scania open tops

Thec 20 is OK from Seaton to Honiton but from Honiton to Taunton the Thursday only Dartline 387 is much better.
Worth noting on the 93 that there are still 2 double decker trips a day due to schools so I'd try to pick one if those.
59 from Plymouth uses very narrow roads but views are limited due to hedges.
For very narrow roads the once a week Crockernwell to Okehampton bus is quite the experience.
The 315 when decker was good but on a single is 2.5 hours of your life you won't get back.

The 118 to Tavistock is a MUST, plus Tavistock is really nice

I stand corrected at Newton Ferrers - but can you not see the estuary (I know its not the sea but its still attractive)? But that's the trouble with some of these places, you'll get a glimpse but unless you stop off you won't see much / anything. And if you do stop off you'll be there for hours. I like the idea of getting the 49 to Heybrook Bay and walking along the coast path to Wembury to get the 48 back from there. If you like walking by way of a focused one-direction walk from bus to bus this looks quite a good option. Yes, the 34 does not take you over the ferry, the 70/70A does that.

Having spoken to stagecoach the 122 Hoburne Devon Day (Goodrington nr Paignton) to Babbacombe open top service every 20 minutes will return for 2023. They just haven't officially named the date yet. Lovely journey, only downside is the journey goes direct to the Bus Station in Paignton from Hoburne and not along the seafront at Paignton as Torbay road is closed.

The motor museum at Moretonhampstead (in the old Devon General Garage) is worth a visit. It should be possible to stop off there and continue your journey as there's also the 359 run by Country Bus between M'hampstead and Exeter, which follows the same route as the Dartmoor Explorer and also goes through Dunsford village. And there's also the 173 between M'hampstead and Exeter via Chagford, run by Dartline, but that's only a handful of journeys a day.

Speaking of pubs, there's also the Maritime Inn and the Admiral Macbride nearby both are also great pubs, the latter has live bands on a Saturday.

From the 25 as it sweeps onto Hoe Road, look left as you pass the bottom of Smeaton's Tower and you'll see Drakes Island (which has been urbexed countless times - here's a video of what the island looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvwV7HZmzn0 ) and if its a clear day you may also see the breakwater fort in the distance.

Other routes that you could try as you do get some good views is Filers 301 from Illfracombe to Coombe Martin. There's the 2 between Exeter and Newton Abbott the scenic bit is between Exminster and Teignmouth, especially on a summers evening and there's the circular that runs via Haytor Vale and Becky Falls. Going by the 2021 edition of the Devon bus map it was the 271 however it was renumbered last year to a new number.

I wouldn't linger at Newton Abbot for too long on your travels. From personal experience, it is a horrible place.
When I've been there its been fairly quiet and this was a Saturday night in October (I'm guessing most revellers will have gone to Exeter or Torquay instead). The market (which is next to the "bus station" i.e. Sherbourne Road) seems reasonable plus the Newton Abbott clock tower (that was formerly part of a church) has some connection to William of Orange, there's an information board nearby.

It is registered to start hourly from 2 April and was already reduced to half-hourly last year.
