Can anybody advise on the best splits

Saturday 18th October Rishton to Stevenage departing about 08:30 returning about 17:30. No railcars. Don't want advance tickets as I might be returning later or departing earlier.

Can't really get any savings without changing onto the slow GN train at Peterborough. And to get that to save a significant sum seems to involve splitting at: Hebden Bridge, Wakefield, Doncaster and Peterborough for the best deal (or that's the best I can do using the most 'obvious' splitting points). But does it save enough to justify it? I wouldn't say so.

The through 'not via London' ticket appears to offer the best value for Saturday leisure travel, whether it's the cheapest or others can do better is another matter. That said the ability to go via London is only about £9 extra and I might be tempted by that, or if I find myself waiting a significant period of time at Stevenage might do a change of route excess to effectively increase the frequency of the return service

How about:

Rishton-Manchester Piccadilly (via Darwen) £9.50
Manchester Piccadilly-London Zones 1-6 Saturday Travelcard £39.80
Boundary Zone 6-Stevenage Super Off Peak Day Return £7.50

Total £56.80

The Saturday Travelcard is quota controlled and is 'booked train only' on the outward leg but any train on the return. I would book this as soon as possible.

You can also get a Saturday Travelcard from Preston costing £49.30, more expensive but gives more journey options.
