Best travel mug for work?

Anyone got a good recommendation for a travel mug?

I'm assuming as a driver I'll need something with a fairly solid lid so I don't spill it all over the cab. o_O Anything else I need to think about?

If this sounds like an odd thing to ask - I used to work in a call centre and they banned regular mugs on desks so you had to bring in something with a lid. I did ask if they needed me to use a sippy cup for cold drinks, but it didn't go down well.

My company doesn't specify what we can or can't use for a mug and I've used open topped mugs without an problem. Depending on what you'll be driving you would have to think about where your mug will be placed (does the cab have cup holders?) - if it's on the desk near controls then a lid is a must. For the last few years I've been using a thermal mug with a tight lid and sippy hole that I bought in Morrisons for about £5. It keeps tea and coffee hot for a good few hours and is easily the best one I've had.

Occasionally your employer might supply you with a branded insulated mug or water bottle as a promotional freebie but over the years I've never found these to be of great lasting quality.

I just use a relatively cheap insulated cup that is leakproof when sealed (because I like to stick it in my bag and bring out later when I feel like a drink).

Don't overthink it, don't buy something hugely expensive as you'll probably lose it and just pick something you like.

There are plenty of drivers who rock up to trains with nothing more than a normal coffee mug

I like the Contigo Byron. You can get them from Tesco and Asda. You can usually get them for about £10 if you are patient and wait for deals.

For example, the blue & silver, black and red ones are £10.12 on Amazon. Postage is extra unless you have Amazon Prime or spend £35 or more.

They have a rubber gasket which usually gives a good seal. Sometimes the seal can get dislodged, so its a good idea to shake the mug upside down over a sink when you have filled it up, to test for dribbles. The insulation is pretty good. It keeps a cup of coffee pleasantly hot for 4 hours, and warm for a while longer.

I've invested in a Ninja Thirsti. It's robust, completely watertight and keeps coffee hot for 8 hours, cold drinks cold for longer and even fizzy drinks carbonated though I've never tried it.

The large 700 ml is £35 but it's worth it, I've bought a number of £15-20 cups that have never lasted.

A standard cup from first class is all I tend to use, usually with a plastic lid. I just can’t be bothered with the extra weight/washing up of a thermal cup - I can see that would be more useful on the freight or on passenger ops without a galley.

Asda do a simple thermal travel mug, with a watertight seal, for about £3.
Keeps hot things hot, cold things cold and robust enough to withstand a few knocks on the floor and bangs about in a cab.

I have tried a ridiculous amount of travel mugs over the years, and by far the best was the Bru Travel Mug.

It’s around £22 so more expensive than other options, however, I would say it’s well worth it.

It’s a ceramic lined mug so no weird stainless steel taste, completely leakproof with the lid closed, it has a 360 degree drinkable lid and can be open and closed one handed. The last two are particularly handy for using on the go.

Also comes in different size and colour options, and it’s been designed to fit in all conventional sized cup holders.

I bought a 1 litre Stanley flask and wee enamel mug. Having the ability to have a hot cup of tea at any time during the shift has been a game changer for me.

I have a Yeti travel mug which come in a whole variety of different colours and sizes: bit pricey but well worth the investment if you like a sturdy cup with plenty of capacity, that keeps your brew warm for ages, easy to clean, with a well-fitting lid that rarely leaks. Can’t recommend highly enough!

I also use Stanley flasks for hot water and milk both of which I also swear by.

It’s perfectly sized to fit in a standard cup holder.

I went for it in high visibility yellow so it stands out and I don’t leave it in the cab. :E

£1.25 paper cup from cafe every day refilled 5-6 times then thrown away.

Over several decades, losing mugs & flasks once a week at one point, so now go with disposables.

Thanks everyone. I was looking at the Yeti Rambler but wasn't sure it was worth £30. However, I was swayed and got a Rambler bottle with a Hotshot lid. Got a bright pink one, so it's not so easy to lose/forget.

I use one from Ikea.
It’s pretty solid and tea and coffee is still warm after 4 hours.

(Search travel mug online, it’s the 2nd one down. I also keep my milk in the £3.50p bottle below the flask).

Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel Mug. Keeps things warm for hours especially after a quick preheat with some hot water. Never leaked on me either.

'The Mighty Mug' available from Amazon. Has a suction pad on the bottom, so there's no danger of it being knocked over.
