Hey! It's a bit last minute but I'm looking at heading to Newcastle on the 10th. Is there any decent place en route to split? Have a railcard, and looking to travel to arrive there at 12/1pm or so.

Single, Day Return or Open Return?

Splitting and Derby and Sheffield is always worth checking out especially with XC's blanket peak restrictions

Have you checked out any of the previous threads for this journey?

Have you tried http://trainscanbecheaper.info/ ?

The term "open return" can be confusing as it used to refer to a ticket type "Open Return" which was valid out and return within a month on any train (this became out within 5 days, return within a month and was renamed "Anytime") but some booking engines now use it to mean any 'walk-up' (ie, not "Advance") ticket.

But if you can return the same day, then you can make use of multiple Off Peak Day Returns (CDRs). Advance tickets will be cheaper, if there are any left, if you can be tied to specific trains.
