Hi IanPooleTrains,
Thanks for telling me. I was just wondering if I would get a chance to see it in this livery, now I think I will!
It's a shame that we won't be able to see Bittern actually with the name and number as Bittern's again, but hopefully she willl continue to run after the Overhall.

Thanks for the help,

Jacob :D

They could've just just painted it as blue as 4464, but I think the chap wanted it to represent one of those that were used on the Coronation.

Why did the owner of the A4 decide to change the name & also to keep it looking like that for 3 years..?

Maybe after it's overhaul it will be re-named after another long gone A4 loco.

I heard it might have been to do with the New Zealand Earthquke as it changed to 4492 a few weeks after it happend. But that was just a rumour and I'm not 100% sure if it's true. I hope it does not get renamed to another A4, Although I do love that A4s I would prefer it back to Bittern, I don't mind which livery.

I think it would have been better still as Bittern! I don't agree with locos been renumbered and renamed for long periods of time and for no special events or reason.

I wonder why it is allways Bittern getting re-numbered and named and why it's not Union of South Africa or one of the others. Okay, Mallard is not going to be renamed and numbered, neither is Sir Nigal as that one is quite special aswell but why not Union of South Africa? :?

"Bittern" does seem to be suffering from a long term identity crisis.

"Union of South Africa" did wear the "Osprey" nameplates that it would have carried if it had not become part of the Coronation series of engines for a short period in 1990.

It's also interesting to note that the original 4492 "Dominion of New Zealand" was punatively allocated the name "Bittern" if it too had not become part of the five A4s dedicated to working the Coronation.

So Union of South Africa has been renamed once, but I think that rename is okay as Union of South Africa starter her life as 'Ospray didn't she?

As mentioned in my post above, indeed she did, though I don't think that she ever left the paint shop with the Osprey nameplates affixed, before she emerged to the public as "Union of South Africa".

Most of the Commonwealth locos had diffrent names before being named to the Comenwealth Collection. I'm not sure how long they went by these names for though.

"Union of South Africa" carried its' originally intended "Osprey" 'plates from 17th April 1937 until 28th June 1937, but it never left the paint shop while in this guise; 4489 "Dominion of Canada" was the only one of the quintet to be seen in public wearing it's pre-Coronation name, "Woodcock", from April 1937 until 15th June 1937.

As for the other three, they never physically carried names other than those of the Coronation series, although they did have bird names allocated to them.

That is also intresting about Dominon of Canada being the only one to carry it's orignal name. I think it's good that the Comonwealth locos were named with a diffrent name before becoming a Comonwealth loco, as the first names were transfered onto diffrent, newly built A4s. If it was not for the Comonwealth locos, their may have only been 30
A4s, not 35.

There's a lot of huffing and puffing in steam preservation circles about Bittern's present guise as Dominion of New Zealand, but it wasn't just the A4s that changed identities. Many engines gained or lost names, numbers and liveries over the years. It's nice that we've got enough steam locos to indulge this harmless fantasy.

Hi Tiny Tim,
You have got a good point there, locos were swapped names, numbers and sometimes got the names removed. I think the BR standard 7MT Brittanias had there names removed, or thats what it says in a steam DVD I have got.

in the closing years of steam, many locos had their nameplates removed, partly to deter erm..souvenir hunters. Very few MN WC/BB had their plates during the final few months of steam Waterloo - Weymouth/ salisbury
