Looking at this fare:

Is it valid to Whitehaven via both Barrow and Carlisle? It looks like it is from a few NRE searches but I would like to be sure, if I use it I'd like to go one way on the outward and the other on the return.

Yes, that's completely fine - mapped on LM. Either way, Carlisle (and Lancaster) are valild destination/origin routing points.

All mapped routes are symmetrical in terms of the maps available between routeing points. (I guess it's theoretically possible that for some journeys the NFM64 fares check could result in an asymmetry but I've never seen that - I've not checked the general case.)
