Hey everyone, I'm close to a job in rail and I'm looking to really boost my knowledge of the industry as a whole (as I'm new to it all).

I've looked in my library and on amazon and there are plenty of books on the history of rail, trainspotting stuff and books on trains themselves but nothing like what I'm after.

I'm sort of after a book like 'modern rail industry for dummies'

Can anyone recommend a book or a different resource that can help me?

Thanks

Can't say I have read it but have glanced at it but Principles of Railway Operations by John Glover may be helpful. Depends what role you are taking on.

There's a really good book called "experience" it's by you and will teach you all you need to know. The basics will be covered when you join most jobs, time will fill in the blanks!

as said by others, for basic knowledge just read through the forums or do basic searches on the net, for job specific knowledge again look at the forums and net, but ultimately doing the job is the best way to learn

the search button above is your friend.

what is your job role likely to be ?

Completely agree, this forum and searching old topics going back years have me a fair idea of the recruitment aspects.

For a general overview of frontline operations, watch that BBC documentary, the railway I think it was called, for a (slightly dramatised) idea of day to day fun and games. It's all on ewetube I think.

Currently on Quest, if you have Sky Anytime, you can download all 6 episodes. Not that I've done that, obviously....

Get a job on a Hertage railway, volunteer get amongst it all my friend, you'll learn nothing by reading books.
