I have an Annual Gold Card (annual Z1-5 Travelcard) and am looking to travel in a couple of weeks from Central London to Southend Airport (one-way) at about 6pm.

A super off peak single from Boundary Z5 to Southend Airport costs £7.90. However, an any time day single from Boundary Z5 to Southend Stations costs £6.45. Is there anything to stop me using the latter for the journey, ending the journey at Southend Airport?

AFAIK Southend Airport is not a member of the Southend stations group.

That's true but it's not a problem (assuming that the OP going via Wickford and is heading towards Southend Victoria which is a a member of Southend stations (fares) group.)

And airport is beyond the town

Not if you're heading to Southend Victoria from the Wickford direction. ( That is both a mapped route and the shortest route from Liverpool street to Southend Victoria.) For completeness, the BZ5 - Southend Stations is route: Any Permitted.

I would come from Wickford direction. This being the case, right to think a BoJ at Southend Airport on a B Z5-Southend Stations would be perfectly permitted?

That is correct. It's illogical to assume you'd be coming from the other direction without saying so.

The anomaly appears to be created by the pricing of the Boundary Zone 5 ticket being in line with the cheaper of the two routes to Southend proper.

Cue a "Via Pitsea" routing appearing on the BZ - Southend stations fares :(

(Or something else which will restrict their use to the C2C route with a higher "Via Wickford" fare appearing for GA services)
