Branch line cancellations

Living near the end of a single-track branch (Matlock), I have learned to check RTT for the inbound service before relying on an outbound service. There have been times where the inbound was seriously late (or cancelled) but the outbound service happily showed no disruption until the scheduled time of departure (or later).

Is there any sure-fire way of getting a clear picture of whether the stock is on its way to pick you up?

My confidence in the "check the inbound service" strategy has been shaken by observing RTT for Okehampton this morning. The 0707 arrival from Exeter had been cancelled. Yet the 0725 departure still showed as running. The data for the last trains yesterday give no suggestion that a unit was left at Okehampton overnight - so surely this was an example of someone forgetting to cancel the second leg of the trip?

But no, the 0725 train is reported by RTT as having left Okehampton and then Crediton on time. So presumably the stock did run out to Okehampton, but empty rather than as a passenger service. RTT showed no other movements into Okehampton. This isn't a RTT issue, as Live Departure Boards showed the same.

Are there any other data sources that would show the replacement ECS move?

Or is there some other technique that can allow the passenger planning a trip from a branch line work out whether to head for the station and expect a train, or spot a cancellation and drive straight to a main line station?
