Even if there is some fraud by people touching out early, that would probably be outweighed by maximum fares incurred by people forgetting to tap out and not bothering to ask for a refund. Most passengers travel on urban buses around Brighton and Crawley where there is little difference between the lowest and highest fare (£2.50 vs £1.70 in Crawley, £2.60 vs £2 in Brighton), so the scope for fraud is small on these routes.
It should be noted that it is cheaper to get a day ticket on mobile than using tap on tap off for day tickets as tap on tap off is charged the same as cash fares, although if you are not sure if you need a day ticket then contactless makes sense as you can take advantage of capping. Also, 60 minute tickets are still only available on mobile. You might have thought that they could offer unlimited tap ons in 60 minutes for the same fare.
In addition, KeyGo (where valid) is cheaper than contactless in most cases.
