The McGill’s 901 between Glasgow and Largs offers some excellent views across the Firth of Clyde towards the mountains of Argyll and Arran. Running every 30 mins from the centre of Glasgow it’s also a fairly easy one to do.

Just a shame the Snake Pass doesn't have a bus anymore...
To be fair, there hadn't been one for quite a while before Hulleys tried it. There used to be a bus from the Manchester direction which ended up at Strines but I have no idea when that last operated.

I can't see anyone taking it on at the moment as there are several sections of bad subsidence and talk of it being closed for an extended period to effect repairs.

58- Peak District: Macclesfield-Buxton
On Sundays, this route extends to Chatsworth House via Monyash and Bakewell, which is also scenic.
Looking back at a 1988 timetable, the 58 on Saturday and Sunday appears to be operated from the Chesterfield side. On Saturdays you got two round trips to Macclesfield, but on Sunday it started from Barrow Hill and there was a connection in Macclesfield for Jodrell Bank and Tatton Park!

I don’t think anyone has mentioned the B3 between Hebden Bridge and Keighley. Up out of Hebden and then over the tops to Oxenhope, then through Haworth and down into Keighley. Lovely views over Hardcastle Crags and then the moors

Just don’t try and do it this summer, the council are closing the road for six weeks or so

I think that connection at Macclesfield would've been on a Sunday for one of Cheshire County Council's Summer Sunday services, the X24 which East Midland ran from Glossop to Macclesfield and Tatton Park.

Just spotted the typo in my original, it was on Sunday you got the connection to Tatton Park. It was on the X24 but it isn't clear where this started from as it's not listed in the timetable. If it was Glossop then presumably it didn't run via Buxton as that isn't listed as an intermediate stop.

Looking back at the old timetables also shows what running times used to be possible. There is a Rotherham to Manchester Airport service which is timed for 15 minutes from Hollingworth to Stockport bus station!

Actually at #5 and #10, although I appreciate those are getting a long way back now.

Still a shame the double-deckers are no more, although it was the last route on which you wanted to find you'd been allocated a Gardner/Voith Olympian.:frown:

The X24 started at Glossop and then ran via the old E24 route from New Mills to Macclesfield and then on to Tatton Park. There was also a 57 from Macclefield which I assume went to Buxton and possibly on down to Ashbourne.

For 1989 Cheshire County Council had 3 cross Cheshire services - X59 Hooton, Chester, Macclesfield to Buxton - X60 Bollington, Macclesfield, Northwich, Chester, Zoo to Parkgate, and the X61 which ran from Ashton, Hyde, Stockport to Knutsford and Macc for Tatton Park, Styal, Jodrell Bank etc.

Yep. Been closed since last Monday 2nd June 2025. Collapsed culverts on the main A6033 road over the top, from Hebden Bridge to/from Oxenhope. Road due to be closed for ~7 weeks.

Did the DalesBus 875/876 around a month ago, the views North of Ilkley had be glued to the windows. Especially climbing out of Cray towards Aysgarth as you leave Wharfedale and enter Wensleydale. If starting from West Yorkshire or York, its a long route but I'd definitely recommend it!

The X47’s journies between Llandrindod and Aberystwyth use the A44 from Llangurig, over the Cambrian mountain pass by Plylimon/Pumlumon.

The X75 from Newtown/Caersws (starts Shrewsbury) leaves the route of the Cambrian main line to follow the Severn/former Manchester-Milford railway and connects at Llangurig.

There’s a bus in Newton Abbot run by CountryBus that runs to Tavistock. 171, goes up to Moretonhampstead then across to Princetown then down to Tavistock, takes about 1hr 30 to get there but on a nice day some gorgeous views.

Here on the Isle of Man we're spoiled for choice really.

My favourite is probably the X3, the peak-time express bus between Douglas and Ramsey via the Mountain Road. Fantastic, especially when a double decker is on. The 'normal' 3 and the 5 from Ramsey to Peel are also pretty scenic journeys, again especially with a double decker.

Up in the north east there are plenty to choose from too. Nobody has mentioned the 689 from Hexham to Consett yet but that journey is spectacular. The 764 from Wolsingham to Consett too. There's quite a few really spectacular services in upper Weardale and upper Tynedale but not easily ticked off, unfortunately.

Very true on both those. Similarly, the Hexham to Allenheads and to Bellingham are also delightful

And now with service to Kielder on Saturdays - timed to connect at Bellingham with the service from Hexham. I've not had a chance to do it yet but imagine it is pretty impressive.

The Mountain Road seems like fun with no speed limits, most likely limited to the vehicles speed limit.:E

Only been to the Isle of Man once and we actually went on the afternoon express between Douglas and Ramsay. At Ramsay, the weather wasn't fine, but in Douglas it started to rain and by the time we were up on the mountain road it was so bad we couldn't see a thing!!! We did do the journey from Peel to Curraghs Wildlife Park and that was really nice.

Could also add the 171's sister route, the 172, which also operates between Newton Abbot and Tavistock, but goes via Ashburton and Dartmeet, rather than Moretonhampstead. (@tram21, both these routes are in Devon, not Cornwall).
A couple other routes in Devon (around Dartmoor) may be worth mentioning:
  • Stagecoach 118 (Mon-Sun, including Public Holidays), Okehampton - Tavistock. Highlights include views of the open moor (at various points), views of Meldon Viaduct (on the former Southern Railway route from Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton, Tavistock and Bere Alston), Lydford Castle and Gorge, and views of Brentor Church (high up on Brent Tor)
  • Country Bus 271 'Haytor Hoppa' (Summer Saturdays only), Newton Abbot - Bovey Tracey - Widecombe-in-the-Moor - Bovey Tracey - Newton Abbot circular. Highlights include views of Haytor and Hound Tor, a beautiful view down into Widecombe, Kitty Jay's Grave and Manaton.

@RELL6L The Clitheroe - Settle bus goes on to horton in Ribblesdale. But there are some extended breaks in Settle

581 Settle - Kirkby Lonsdale. Actually the 580/581/81 all the way from Skipton to Lancaster isnt bad.
Keighley Bus 57 from Bradford to Kly over the tops.
75 skipton - Malham-Settle summer saturdays only. Bus stop at Malham Tarn!
Its complicated but you can go all round the Isle of Arran by bus. Google Stagecoach-Arran for a pdf Arran bus timetable.
Oldham - Huddersfield.
Keighley-Skipton-ilkley-Keighley is quite nice. 62, 64, 66
Buses alone Morecambe Promenade between Morecambe and Bare give nice views across Morecambe Bay. 100's are frequent but there are other routes including an infrequent 755 to Bowness on Windermere.
Burnley bus M4. between Laneshaw Bridge and Crosshills. If you stay on you get a scenic tour round Airedale Hospital but i dont think that is what this thread is about!!!

One around there I've always fancied doing but never got round to is the 7 - Todmorden to Bacup/Rossendale over the hills. It does look like it becomes a suburban slog after Bacup, though I'm sure a relatively scenic one!

Yes, it's superb on a fine, clear Summer's day - or Winter's day for that matter. I often use it to reach the East Lancashire Railway from Calderdale.

The 'suburban slog' as you describe it between Bacup and Rawtenstall is a fascinating journey along a steep sided valley with remains of old railway lines and substantial quarry workings high on the surrounding hills. A great journey especially on a double-decker which the 7 usually is during the week as it serves a school in Todmorden.

Whilst I’m not claiming it’s the scenic, I was pleasantly surprised by Transdev’s 2A from Blackburn to Chorley recently

I agree - I did the Bacup to Todmorden (8) just before Covid and it was a lovely run even on a winter's afternoon. Even on a Saturday, it was a B7TL/Gemini

I’ll have to give that a go.
I’m intending to spend a day bus bashing in the general Burnley area in September. I’ve never done that route.

The 85 (and the twice daily extentions of the 6) in County Durham is reasonably scenic (on the section between Cockfield and Barnard Castle.) Beautiful view of Cockfield fell and the Gaunless Valley, and a couple of rural villages along the way. Its just a shame that the first half of the route is nowhere near as scenic! (From Bishop Auckland)

302 from Helensburgh to Carrick Castle. Runs alongside Loch Lomond to Tarbet, alongside Loch Long for a couple of miles near Arrochar, then over the Rest and Be Thankful pass, then on single track roads down to and alongside Loch Goil.
