agreed, however unlike many here I had had a soft spot for Northern and could recognize when theyd worked hard to better things for us pax.

As a TOC they were generally enthusiast friendly and some of the best and most genuine customer service iv had on the rails has beeen from them.

When confronted with rising pax numbers in a no groath franchise rather than berry their head in the balast they tried as hard as they could. A pitty they funded some of it with the notorious £80 penalty fakes, dolled out by securitty thugs with about as much rail and ticketing knoladge as my Granny.

I got 2 of these, both in Manchester and both on occasions where Id started at a station with a TVM which aint much good to a blindy and the gripper didnt get to me and eather than listen or take my willingly offered money they did me. 1st time round they were quick to sort it but 2nd time I had to pay and involve various orgonisations including those who represent VI people to get it back

since then however its all been good and whilst Id like to see STM go for good I welcome the promise of longer booking office hours and indeed in some cases introduction of booking offices fullstop.

coming shortly
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
All a bit lastminute but 2 short days on the rails was set up as a result of techniquest extending an action packed weekend off work to include a trip North to bash the diversions in Glasgow caused by the work in around Queen Street Station. Knowing this would involve alot of milage on dreary 170s it was decided that time should also be left for something a bit more interesting too.

Having flown north and Trammed it to Edinburgh Park it was arranged He'd join me there but Red Pen Feever struck and he started chasing winning units around. All went well until 2 of the formentioned dreary 170s held him up on route to Waverley causing him to miss the 15:05 which I had just borded
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
After a short delay however we were finally united on Haymarkets P4 where we stayed to awate the next train to Stirling, 15:36x Waverley and formed much to my surprise of a double 158 consist including the luxury of an Inverness one with declasified first and working Aircon. Until a few weeks ago I hadnt been to STG for ages and my last trip was to visit an old friend and I got turbostars both ways. This time my favourite DMU was simply acting as a positioning move for an Express service from the North which during the works are diverted off the main fast route via Croy and run instead via Cumbernauld, Langloans JN and Coatbridge, rare track indeed. Hopes of another 158 faded when the CIS on P3 said 3 coaches only and when they turned up they were as expected quite full and we set off on time. The non stop workings normally do this journey in half an hour but due to the diversion its booked 51 minutes, the first half of which is spemt getting to Cumbernauld and hanging around for all of 20 seconds to pic up a route conducter for the run to Central. The next bit isnt what youd call fast and if flying solo or if your a norm is a drag but here was the first of several highlights of the bash, rare new required track! With another hard to grab bit of Scotland safeley done we headed for Central and during our run in positioned ourselves at the front doors for the next move.

Arriving 4 up we headed (pausing briefly for a photo) out through the barrier and into Boots for the ever essential cold drinks and deoderant for Tech and then charged off down the escalaters to the Low lEvel where after a short wate a 320 turned up and took us to Partic. Last time we went bashing in Scotland the weather was so bad we welcomed any kind of shelter. Tonight it was mild and pleasent and a pleasure to exit the station for a breather during a nice gap between planned moves which wouldnt have allowed one for another couple of hours. The first one of these involved a 334 2 stops along to Queen Street LL where a short wate on the platform produced a double 170 (one still in Barby) on an Edinburgh service routed via the unusual and again a little hard to get diversion via Springburn. Despite a spirited run once back on the E and G we were 2 down at Croy and due to a passcom activation here also we chose to bale instead of wrisking a tight plus at Falkirk. As it happened this was a great move as all in all the train sat at Croy for 5 or more minutes and once gone left us to enjoy a beutiful quiet evening with only a handful of intendingPax and a few Taxi Drivers for company. Im glad we did this as the next train of the night turned out to be our last as the Gen on RTT proved solid and the service we borded back towards GLQ used the booked route via the new Cowlares section and onwards via Anneysland. Now Im sure we've all had that feeling on a bash where once the new/exciting/interesting bit is over the boddy and mind start to shut down/go into auto mode? Well that happened to us now and as we had books to read, headphones to hide inside and paperwork to do we stayed put on the same unit and let it take us back East where we had a Burger King and a quick bus ride home to finish a productive but rather stamina sapping outing.

A lazy start the following Morning with Bacon and Saussage Sarnies and lots of coffee, finally heading out just before 12. Various ideas were in the melting pot for the Afternoon and the one we ended up picking was a clearing up of unscored borders line shacks starting with Newtongrange, followed by a lengthy wate at Shawfare (seriously Scotrail wy do all your pre recorded information messages sound like theyr recorded after a funeral) and finally Eskbank (Dud for me), all on 158s. techs Central Scotland Interestingly was gripped several times and never questioned despite only being valid to Newcraighall. Coffee sauced from Smiths when we got back and we took it, just for fun onto a Bathgate train for some 334 noise and so I could finally score the new Bathgate station as havnt stopped here since it moved. Back to town to meet my Wife and introduce her to a CL68 on the 17:08 to Inverkeithing where we then returned by 158 to EDB and headed briefly home before going for a Toby Carvery dinner. Sadly for us all but particularly for Tech and our Cat who are inseparable when he stays that was it and as we headed for bed he headed homewards. Sorry its not all that interesting guys but the hearts not in it at the mo, other than when a 68 is involved of course!

Considering you didn't think it was much of a write-up, I enjoyed the read. Always do enjoy seeing the view from a fellow basher's point of view on a trip I've had company on.

The 68 was good fun, but I do hope you can find your mojo again fast. The weekend's adventure sure helped me, and if I can help you get you through it, just shout!

Next big one is a London trip which is semi norm as taking the Wife in 2 weekends time.
Were going First on a pare of freebees from VTWC who finally got to us in the Huuuuuuuuuuuge pile of complaints about the early disruption handling at Lamington, particularly in our case the near constantly changing info on ticket and route validitty and appropriate accommodation of needs relating to my Wifes Guide Dog.

Unsure of the exact order of things but thanks due to Techniquest who has helped greatly orgonising it and in advance to any TFL or other staff on here who we will doubtless come into contact with on our travels.

Before all that however I am hoping to sample a 73 next weekemd, stay tuned for more

Only time I've done bus tours around London, it was with Big Bus Company. It's been years since I did that mind so I don't remember much about it to be honest!

All tickets to/from Dover Priory are valid on HS1 because of the sea wall collapse at Dover. You could then stop and re-start from Ashford ( not sure if legal? but doable)
That may be a cheaper option?

It came to my attention a few weeks ago that a number of forum members were planning a round trip via the Chieften, Citylink and seated sleaper over the bank holiday weekend. Whilst Iv always wanted to ride the Inverness>Fort William coach service it wasnt to be as due to the formentioned bank holiday I was already working Saturday. However the chance to reaquaint myself with a few fellow bashers and introduce myself to a 73/9 was to good to pass up and so whilst I'd promised myself that I wouldnt be visiting the West Highlands (accept finally doing kyle sometime) again for an extended period and that this year I'd be avoiding Bank Holiday travel as much as possible as living where I do its just such hard work both the above resolutions went in the bin and after a normal quiet early sunday at home with the wife and several large coffees I headed for Edinburgh Bus Station and after collecting my reservation borded the 11:00 Citylink 900 which delivered me in a timely and generally unspectacular manner to Glasgow where a connection was made onto the Citylink service to Fort William. Always wanted a shot at this one and whilst the first part of the route is a serious trundle as Glasgow trys hard to stop you leaving once out on the trunk route North you really do feel like your on an adventure and a cumfortable one at that, thanks to West Coast Motors who run this service under contract providing modern Scania coaches which seam to cope well.

Rather hope the 73/9 produces now for you! The noise of the loco will soon tell you, the difference in sound from a 67 is quite significant.

Jealous of the run down the West Highland Line as I have wanted to return there since February 2006. Scary to think that's 10 and a bit years ago!

Despite the drivers efforts we were badly held up by a lot of slow moving traffic, brought on by the holiday weather no doubt and it wasnt til the last 45 minutes or so that any appreciable time could be clawed back, not good if anyone onboard happened to be travel sic or have a fobia of fareground rides in general and rollercosters in particular. To start with I wasnt amused iether as Id just dosed off but when realising what was going on I reawoke and settled down to enjoy the A82 as I did on my previous trip last year. Another downside to being late was that just after leaving Glasgow I'd had a call from Yorkie to say that he along with Crossover, Starmill and BB21 were planning to walk to Corpach before getting the train back and that if on time I could jump aboard the Mallaig bound unit and join them out there. Sure enough the 156 was in but with 3 minutes I wasnt going to make it and as the weather was so nice (will it always be sunny when I come here)? I strolled along to the end of the bus stands and sat on the ground to chill and enjoy it. Sadly this was short lived as the rain started and unsure how long it'd last I made my way to the station and took a far less cumfy seat in the wating area for the fester before the others returned. As Im hoping for a 73/9 to haul us south the sound of a skip starting up was disapointing but it buggered off somewhere, any ideas foalks? Replies of any kind welcome, the rest will be posted later.

Apart from the bus being late, sounds like a good time so far! Looks like it's 67009 that was at Fort Bill today with no 73/9s so it doesn't look promising :(

Fishquin is correct, the beast that is 67009 did indeed haul us home, turned out what I heard was her coupling onto the stock and shortly after the ETS was connected. Shortly after this, the others minus BB21 who had left at Inverness, anxious to not be late for work on Monday arrived on the 156.

Whilst a couple of us stayed at the station the others rushed off to Morrisons for certain comestibles that the buffet couldn't supply and when they returned we boarded the IC Swallow liveried seated car with a Virgin Liveried lounge buffet behind.

Away on time with a driver Yorkie recognised and who lived up to all the praise given to him.

B late leaving Corrour due to many many pre booked bed customers all piling off the short platform through pleb class towards the beds, meaning vestibule veg had to shift. We all spent quite a bit of time if not with heads out but certainly near the droplights as the seats were, to put it bluntly, a bit warm. All in all a great evening of speed, clag, thrash and good company.

others left at Glasgow and after witnessing the departure I gave in to the tiredness that had been clawing at me and nodded off, awaking with a start as we came to rest in princes street gardens for 5 minutes before finally coming to rest on P19 8 down. A few minutes holdup til doors were unlocked but then it was off home in a taxi having had a good day including a new citylink route. Thanks all, shame about the 73 but fun had for sure

It was certainly a lively journey behind 67009! As mentioned, we were a few down at Corrour due to an unusually large passenger flow (there were bags going in through various droplights and some luggage got carted down from the guards van to the beds once fully platformed at Rannoch) and also lost a bit of time at Ardlui - I can only guess there was an issue obtaining the token as we drew forward about 20m or so (over the course of a few small shunts) before we got the TPWS Off indication. Thus at Crianlarich we were reported 5L but by Garelochhead we were some 4E, giving the driver a chance to get his Thermos refilled :D

As Im hoping for a 73/9 to haul us south the sound of a skip starting up was disapointing but it buggered off somewhere, any ideas foalks? Replies of any kind welcome, the rest will be posted later.

When we arrived it was in the sidings near Morrisons, so I guess it drew forward over the junction and set back into the platform as required ready for boarding, which is probably what you heard

Thanks once again to all for company and whatnot on this trip and creddit where die to all crew involved with what must have been a pritty tough Sunday evening aboard

4th-6th June

Less than 2 days and off we go again for another trip down the WCML, destination London Baby! I say we as the Wifes joining me too and whilst there will doubtless be some transport action of one sort or another this is more of a City Break than a bashing trip, and all thanks to VTWC who finally at the start of May got in touch following a lengthy email of comment, complaint and not a little sarcasm sent following what was quite frankly my worst rail farse for a number of years during the Lammington disruption which was not in itself virgins fault but quite a bit of the poor and ever changing information on ticket validitty or lack of same on alternative routes most certainly was and whilst we accepted that we traveled South on only the second day of normal service post Newyear the fact that the info online when I left the house just after 5 was as out of date as a pre Beaching Timetable by the time I reached the station 40 minutes later was shocking and made worse by the failure to solve much of the confusion when we returned home 2 days later. Add to this a number of shortcomings in the replacement bus department in terms of what was going where, whos tickets were/wernt valid, was there enough space for all pax, luggage and in my Wifes case assistance dog and the small trivialitty of no heating on the coach on a cold damp winter morning and you have a pritty grim situation which actually made the actual delay minutes seam minor even though they wernt. Anyhow to cut a long story short despite the innitial email going into my junkmail folder I am now the proud owner of 2 Complimentary First Class returns from Carlisle to Euston with only a short change inbetween it and home in both directions. All be it in standard  I woant be posting this all in a oner as may well need to pop back for any on the go advice during the trip and thanks to those here and elsewhere on the forum for all assistance so far with particular thanks to Techniquest for everything and to those who have replied to my Railcard Travelcard discount querie.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I understand your frustration regarding Lamington.

I booked a 1st Class Advance Glasgow - York via Appleby for February back in November for my partner's birthday on the 13:40 GLC - London Euston via Trent Valley Railway, changing at Carlisle onto the 14:55 Leeds service. This was before the Lamington Viaduct collapse.

I revised the plans to depart on the 12:22 GLC - CAR via Kilmarnock shuttle, so as to pick up the Leeds service at CAR. Then the Eden Brows landslip happened.

Revised plans again to pick up the 13:37 (or thereabouts) EUS service, changing at Preston and Manchester Oxford Road. There was no way both myself and my partner were going to use replacement buses, due to her mobility issues.

We still arrived at York at the intended time, however, it meant that my partner missed out on the Settle & Carlisle line, which was the whole purpose of going outward that way and returning via Newcastle and Edinburgh a few days later.

I didn't really do much, but glad you appreciated it. A decent time in London will do you the world of good, as will a nice run in First Class. Jealous of that!

Whilst there was a temptation to iether book on the direct Edinburgh>Euston or on the faster service from Glasgow I stuck with the usual transfer at Carlisle as it almost certainly avoids voyagers and definatly keeps us clear of the mid evening anti climax that would have been GLC and a slow trundle back East on Monday. 10 past 8 on Saturday Morning therefor saw us ready to go on the Manchester bound TPE, my first trip with them since franchise change in April and with a little more legroom both due to the Wife deciding to leav the dog at home this time, owing to the unsuitability of much of the Underground for the poor boy and also as it was rather busy on this service and whilst Im happy to stand the Mrs has foot troubles also so they put us in the almost empty First Class meaning our entire run today was in FC. Off pritty much on time with the Border City reached at 09:30. 16 minutes here and would normally have had a Ritazza coffee but not today as I hoped thered be plenty of said beverage going free aboard the 09:46 to London. Train arrived early giving us plenty of time to get on and settled. Half way to Penrith Bananna and an Itallian style breakfast cake, similar in texture and taist to a hot cross bun were delivered, v nice but if you dont like Saltanas etcthen you woant enjoy. tea and coffee followed 10 minutes later and these were followed by the grip, just too late to stop any freeloaders getting a snack 'lol' Thankfully none of those aboard that we know of and we settled down to doze and read as Cumbria gave way to Lankashire and so on. Crew change at Preston and a pack containing baked cheezy bites, mini chocky fingers and a filled roll which I hadnt eaten yet when I wrote this were delivered. Its a mark of how often I use slower stopping trains on this line that the novalty factor of being non stop Warrington London still hasnt warn off. Its a lot of fun. The roll turned out to be egg with a hint of mild cheez, yummy and the reappearance of the drinks trolley finished things off nicely. The journey continues prity much as before with Euston arrival being on time at 1308.

Off to the Underground where they are doing a great job of croud management during the escalater works. Euston has one of the smaller ticket halls of a busy Z1 hub and I can well see the need for measures such as the 1 way system at the cross to help people avoid it. No service at Euston Square wasnt helping matters iether and with all this it was some time til we were moving again on the Victoria Line towards Green Park where we changed to the jubilee 1 stop to Westminster. Here we exited towards the peer and bought our tickets which I think were good value for a 3 hour trip with Thames River Services to the Thames flood barrier, something thats been on my bucket list for many years. whilst aimed mainly at visiters it was nice to notice many locals using the service particularly on the return leg as a fast run along the river. Also pleasing was the Wifes reaction to hear Big Ben striking in real life after so many recordings. Departure was prompt at half 2 with live commantary provided humourously by one of the crew who informed us he was not a guide but mearly a crewmember, a nice touch and I think it made many appreciate it more. An hours run took us along with the outgoing tide to Greenwich with 1 picup stop at St Catherines. Many left the boat at Greenwich with some bording for the hours trip down and through the truly vital flood defences. I woant give you all a history lesson here but seriously this is worth it guys and recommended. The boat filled again at Greenwich for the trip to the City now running against the tide with both engines going hard and the boat handling the conditions very well. Westminster reached on time and onto a D Stock opperated service towards embankment for the Northern to Charing Cross. Before we did anything else we decided to go to Burger King, good idea we thought but what wasnt such a good one was to eat in as by the time we'd had a filling feed the tiredness had kicked in and our planned next move was scrapped in favour of repositioning to Victoria and then on by Southern to East Croydon where we were booked into the easy hotel. I dont know for sure but I think I may have just had my first 387 as dont think 377/6s go to Brighton do they? Once checked in we had a fight with the aircon (and lost, it was better the second night) and literally fell into bed after a long but fantastic day.

Day 2 saw us intentionally sleap in a bit but when we did wake we were too hot from the off partly due to the non working aircon and partly due to the sun which despite our blind being down was so hot it was coming through. Its nice to have it and we enjoyed it later when not indoors lol. Showered and out by 10:46 and off to the station where I bought a paper travelcard as the plan was to do our own thing for part of today and I was going further. A long cue and a couple of cansilations (due to a shortage of available traincrew) later and we were victoria bound once again on quite a busy service but nothing compared to the hundrads piling onto brighton services. At the tube ticket hall we split up, she bound for the natural history museum and me for family visiting. We joined forces again at Charing Cross at 18:55, she approaching from embankment on the Northern and myself from the Bakerloo. Up stairs to the booking office for 2 CDRs to Gravesend and onto the 19:22. Are yess, networker bashing, complete with working air vents, open hoppers and some suit talking crap into his phone all the way to Sidcup, excillent and a lot of fun as always. On time into the terminal platform at Gravesend and over the footbridge for the evenings main event, the 20:42 High Speed working to St Pancakes. Its been nearly a year since my last fix (I got addicted some years ago) and the Wife having listened to me and watched a youtube vidio wanted to try it. Usual slow trundle up to Ebsfleet where the grip sold us our upgrades and we departed bang on for our charge up HS1 which as ever didnt disappoint and Im glad to say the Mrs is now also hooked. At STP the 21:11 Thameslink service was 15 down which suited us as the next 2 were canx and despite everyone claiming this station is fit for the 21st century it will never be complete for me and doubtless many others with bags, children, wheelchairs or not much time till they find a way of including a direct lift from Southeasten to TL, for the unknowing thats top to bottom. More Electrostar Ironingboard action on the run through the core and Suburbia back to ECR, I suspect Ive just finished a few bits of track here as now done this once in both directions, maybe someone could advise? Having been too hot all day to eat we were both now hungry and happy to pay the chingy prices in whistlestop (still open at gone 22:00 and staffed by a fantastic pakistani chap) for a sarny and snacks which we ate in our hotelroom before once again falling gratefully into bed, tired after fantastic weather and lots of fun.

Glad to read of an excellent time, I'll try to bear that in mind for future reference about the Thames Barrier cruise, as it sounds fun. What was the ching?

The Thameslink Stagger's route is booked to be STP-Blackfriars-Elephant and Castle-Herne Hill-Streatham-Norwood Junction-ECR from memory.

Glad to hear the wife loved HS1 too, good excuse to go to London again just for some 395 thrash! I need to get on a 395 again myself, it's been far too long!
