That was a good read. I've done the bus trip from Inverness to Fort William many times on ancient Highland Scottish buses in the 1980s as I lived in Fort William then. What vehicles are Stagecoach using? Did you get the number of the one you had mate?

Didnt get the chance mate but current regular vehicles are Plaxton boddied B7s.

They handle the route well and seam to have the right capacity at this time of year.

I think that during the summer season a similar system as Stagecoach's 555 in the Lakes could be used i.e high spec deckers.

The vehicles they use on the 555 are very good. I was on one of them yesterday but only on the 2A service in Morecambe.

Well I thought that was it for 2016s bashing but as I type this the doors are just being locked on the 06:06 Edinburgh>Plymouth, worked today by a slightly short formed HST. This is a great train and the news that XC want to remove it from this working and allocate all HSTs to Newcastle starting services is depressing to say the least. The fact that XC have once again proved their incapability to get such basic things as reservations and catering provision right today is to my mind further evidence that they quite frankly dont have a clue what theyr doing! Lack of catering is for me today unhelpful as my morning walk from bus to train through the City Centre proved yet again why we should have 24hr lisencing rather than all this late til 4/5am nonsence as the resultant kickout of the clubs rendered useless the few open facilities for getting such basics as coffee or breakfast to anyone in a rush. I also noted that not single tram was moving in the town to scoop up the many punters, a trick missed me thinks. Deprived of even so much as an overpriced cup of Cross Country tea I settled in with the MP3 player to pass the 2h35 to York. I was however interupted on departure from Berwick by none other than the stuardess who said that the muffled PA had been to say no card payments for the trolley, not no trolley at all. Whilst all hastily rekindled hopes of a bacon butty were as hastily dashed again I did have enough coinage for a cuppa which greatly helped things along, as did the brief setting of the world to rights with the TM Ian shortly after. 4 down after NCL but with coach D missing from the formation we got away sharpish and this got me thinking that if this is the sort of performance achievable the Scotrail 5 coach sets will go like sht off a shuvvle when introduced, proving yet again that this 40 plus year oldt technology is vastly superior to the aledgedly innovative and more suitable DMUs that replaced it and, with the acception of 158s woant be missed by many. I wonder if when the HSTs are finally retired by Scotrail if an internally reconfigured voyager fleat will take their place or if newbuilds will be ordered? With electrification jobs falling over seamingly everywhere just now it'll be interesting to see what gets canned for the sake of saving money/helping get already commited projects finished.

Such enjoyable speculation saw the rest of the trip pass off quickly enough and on arrival at York the first job was another hot drink and something to eat before meeting up with the forums very own walking talking version of your favourite ticket pricing system, Yorkie, who was the cattalist behind todays somewhat short notice WY Dayrover outing, also attended by Starmill. The main business of the day was to start at Huddersfield and in order to get in position we headed for the next Cross Country HST, you know, the one with no cheepo advances on it that would have saved me getting up at 4am! This train allows a quick leap at Leeds onto a TPE to Huds but due to a train fault was over 20 late so we instead took the 10:53 TPE which we would have joined at LDS. Off to the bus station on arrival here and after a short wate we joined an internally refurbed First Volvo B7 decker on the express bus to Bradford Interchange. Appologies here but at time of writing I dont have the list of route numbers to hand as I was quite frankly to lazy to take any real notes and am awating a list from Starmill who was mainly responsible for the bus moves today. Interestingly other than a short stretch we avoided the guided busway on the way into Bradford as the roads were empty and lets be honest here the journey will probs have been quicker by avoiding it. I was peckish by this stage and bought food from greggs. The fact the Gavisco came out an hour later reminded why I dont waist money with this chain normally and arnt they chingy these days??? Next up a very very busy 3 car 158 from Bradford to East Garforth, my first shack score today.

The idea here was to return to the Centre of Leeds by bus and I think all participants agreed this was the worst and most boring use of 1h20. A Wright boddied B7RLE was wating at the terminus but had only gone about 600 metres before it failed and we wernt quite quick enough to accept the drivers offer of a non stop ride somewhere before he took the vehicle back to depot so we piled off and over the road for another B7RLE back to the station turning circle first then on into Leeds. Bored and glad to get off we were and now came to the part of the day I'd particularly requested, a trip to Ilkly and back, completing the Triangle and indeed all the Airdale/warphdale lines for coverage. Out we went on a 322 and after a short break and in my case a very nice cup of tea from the station caffay back on a 333 to Forster Square. We then stayed with the same set to Leeds and on arrival strolled over for the 17:50 to the Cross with a certain all over Blue Class 90 in charge. 43094 joined us on this, my first trip on a VTEC refurb MK4, quite impressed I must say. Something like a crazy plus 2 at Westgate for an HST back to leeds where the group briefly seperated with some of us walking and others taking a number 70 bus to the redeveloped area by the dock and Armeries museum where an equally short notice forum meal took place in the quietest Pizza Express Iv ever visited. Crossover also joined us for this and whilst I thank everyone for their company and friendship he deserves special thanks as before driving home he got out his satnav and drove me to my now much anticipated bashers rest, the Kingston Hotel on Kingston Terrace, booked in a rush for by Techniquest the night before, thanks mate!!!!!!

Whilst you wouldnt take your Mum for a luxury break here and some of the tripadvisor eviews make it sound extra grim as a crashpad at the end of a long day its fine. Its not spotlessly clean and no use if alergic to stairs the bedding and towels were fresht, the kettle and power point s worked, the bathroom was warm, shaving and shower water hot and powerful and the bed whilst hard was better IMO than a travelodge. You can pay extra for breakfast but as nobody seamed to be around I checked out, took a cab into town and having visited M and S food and the booking office took my seat on the 2 coach 144 (happy happy me) working the 10:19 to Lancaster for new track between Settle JN and Benthom and my first exkertion on a Pacer on this line. Whilst jointed track and pacer thrash are always guaranteed to make me happy I was at the same time touched with a bit of sadness at the fact that this move and the last bash of the year were in an area lived in and loved by former member 4SRKT who sadly passed away this year. I feel sure he'd have enjoyed the company and the pacing had he been around still. Call me centimental but Im going to dedicate this final outing of 2016 to him. With new and exciting things over the next job was to beat it home before Hogmanay brings Scotland to a standstill so without further fuss it was onto the next Edinburgh bound Pendo for the last lap. Thanks again to all who made this what it was, a lot of fun, and whilst I would rather have avoided another boring 185 and that bus to Leeds the rest was worth every penny and all the effort. 2017 promises to be another interesting year and hopefully a better one in many ways. Thanks all for reading this foalks, more to follow but for now, belated seasons greetings and an early happy new year.

Happy New Year good sir!

An excellent way to see out 2016, and not a problem at all for booking the hotel. To be honest I didn't check TripAdvisor, the photos looked good as did the price and location seemed reasonable too. Very good of Crossover to drive you up there, I hope it wasn't too far out of town! Good news that it will do just nicely for somewhere to crash after a hard day's bashing, might well give it a go myself.

I it makes a good enough bashers rest, as I say the kettle, power sockets and bathroom worked and hot water seamed freely available. If you can overlook the fact many fittings are cheep, the slightly damp smell and the odd cobweb/bit of dust its just grand. It wasnt all theat far out iether and plenty buses but didnt try these as wanted time at the other end to get rations, tickets etc and a decent seat for a nearly 2 hour run.

Oh and cups for coffee were clean and nice bickies.

7th to 14th Jan

I woant post a full report as no real interest worth reading but during Tehniquests anual trip to Scotland post festive season I was able and in some cases willing to aid and assist him in clearing some new and exciting bits and bobs.

Firstly on the 8th, we paid a visit to a very quiet Edinburgh Gateway, a shack score for us both and Im glad to say we gave it a thurror once over including both platforms and the tram stop. Brucy bonus in the shape of a nice 158 to get us there too.

Following day the silly bugger left without his pact lunch so I scuttled off to glasgow to give him it and as he'd said he was planning a session on the subway I joined him for one last ride on a system I use very little and am unlikely to use again before the new trains enter service.

We went for haircuts, boot shopping, drinking and 68 bashing to Inverkeithing on Tuesday, returning to town by bus which included a manky x First Tridant between Inverkeithing station and the Park and Ride.

Wednesday saw us bussing it to the borders on shack scoring duties. My first trip to dunbar since Lothian under the brand of east coast buses took this route over, using Volvos yeeha!
Doing it this way was not only megabucks cheeper but ment our next move on the Perrymans 253 completed this route for me, a nice achievement.

Grycers tip, hop off at the retail area just off the A1 and dive into morrisons for supplies and hot cafay style meals from 8am to 7pm weekdays and reduced hours Sundays, we did and twas fantastic. Also a Mcdonalds and a TL at this location. We took a taxi into town and with BWK finally scored for Tech we settled down to spot and wate for the X Plymouth HST on which a cheep cheep advance had been booked for a luxury run home.

Friday saw a full trip round Fife with 68024 and my mate/neighbour Allan who is also a minor enthusiast, followed by a huge dinner and drinks.

Just noticed that SRPS Railtours have announced a date in May for steam hauled specials on the Forth Circle including the non passenger link from Fife to Alloa so dependant on ching I may well book this when it becomes bookable as its a major bit of the non passenger Scottish Jigsaw fitted into place. Expected to be steam hauled too which is nice.

Talking of kettles I am trying to plot a way to take the Northerm Steam services over the S and C next month too, particularly as theyr on service trains and at regular prices.

Next excitement is now going to be a forum day out doing a circular trip round kent on a 395 as well as the Gravesend Tillbry ferry and C2C back to London. I wasnt able to get a seat on the S and C Kettles but I did have a very enjoyable day out on a run home from the Midlands last week. Searching for advances I put in via Barrow and got a very cheep AP from Crewe changing at Lancaster and Barrow for the 37 hauled 14:37 departure. A very nice waist of an afternoon.

10-12 Feb 2016. Well off we go again. 2017s first propper trip and whilst not long or particularly special it does cross off a number of things on the bucket list and provide badly needed theropy. Badly needed as Im now sadly Wifeless and catless after she decided to move North again and didnt extent the invite to me, not that Id have gone anyway as it holds no attraction. Whilst I respect her decision and feelings it does hurt a lot, more so as she admitted to not being aware of just how much it would hurt. Anyway onwards and maybe upwards, I will post a link at the end of this report that some help would be appreciated with but for now lets get on shall we?

It was proposed a good while back that a forum circular tour round Kent on a 395 would be a rather nice thing to do and the idea soon grew into the above plus the Gravesend Tillbry ferry and a run back to London with C2c. This was duely arranged and I was dead set on going despite the quiet time of year work wise plus the events mentioned abovemeaning money was/still is very tight. Id spent the afternoon keeping a check on the 15:30 off the Cross in the hope of a drop of loco haulage on my positioning move to Glasgow. I was booked on the National express coach to London from there as it was a good bit cheeper than going from Edinburgh and sadly departure time was just a bit to early to make using the XC HST, far and away my favourite EDB GLC train in the book a viable option. I was certainly glad when it reported from Newcastle at about the time it should have done as whilst 91s arnt the most exciting things out there its still a loco in amongst a sea of voyagers and 170s and various classes of unrefurbished sprinters with dodgy seats. Granted theres 334s but the A to B in the evenings is a slow and painful experience and not worth the hassle of Glasgow on a Friday night. Resolving to take the electra if it got in on time and the 900 Citylink if it didnt I headed out into the traffic ridden hell that is Edinburgh on a Friday night. Having reached the East end of Princes Street by 19:45 I checked on the progress of my train and finding it still largely behaving itself I made my way down stairs just in time to observe a very enthusiastic driver departing P20 with the empties from the evenings Fife Circle turn. Onwards to P8via the cashpoint, booking office and of course Burger King and at 20:17 was off. On time arrival at Central and it was out and over to the other side of Gordon Street to the 24hr Newsagent for a bottle of water, pack of bickies and a huge and as I found out later delicioustuna baggette and then into a cab across to Bucannon Bus Station. Not long to wate here before I borded the NX588 service, departing on shedule at 22:30.

Its Scottish half term this week and as I was later to learn much of the rest of the UK was also off so in addition to the usual smattering of students and vaguely insane budget travelers that usually populate overnight NX runs there were also quite a few young families making for a generally friendly atmosphere as we headed off into a grim Scottish night with a snow and ice warning in place for much of the distance to London. Picups at Lockerbie and Penrith woke me briefly and then it was Keel services just after 3am in gently falling snow, followed by a further stop just before the M6 tol at Norton Keyns. Only downside to this was quite a few of the kids didnt really sleap and some were understandably a bit grumpy about this! I dozed again til we dropped off someone at Milton Keynes Coachway and then it was London, as I texte to a couple of people, my happy place! I must remember to email NX and point out just what a fantastic driver we had, just the right mix between safety chritical PSV holder, customer service ambasedor and standup comedian! 20 down at VCS due to weather and lots of weekend roadworks and having decided what I was going to do for a time waisting couple of hours I took a black cab (yes I know very chingy when I could have walked) to Green Park Station.

There has been 1 relatively short, and as I soon found out really rather boring branchline in the way of clearing the Pic line once and for all, that being Uxbridge and so after a 10 minute wate for a through service I was off. The train was vertually empty most of the way and towards the end freezing cold but at 9 minutes to 9 exactly it was done! next job was a run on an S stock set at speed as had been wanting to try this for a while. Despite the fact it was warm, accellerated well and felt cumfy during the faster running I still cant get to really liking these trains but theres no doubt that theyr fit for purpose and will be a good fleat for LU. Due to engineering works the Met was only running to Baker Street and its was nice to have that little bit from the mainline into there ticked off too meaning now I just need Cheshom, Ammershom and Watford to complete this line too. I made a bit of a mistake here as I took the Bakerloo onwards to Charing Cross, totally forgetting that theres no direct access to the NR concourse just now and that taking the Jubilee to London Bridge would really have made much more sense. This cost me my train of choice, the 10:09 Gillingham service meaning I had to take the 10:23 Gravesend via Sidcup terminater instead. I made the booking office clark very happy here as he clearly doesnt sell many BZ6 tickets and enjoyed something different. Turns out that Starmill bought the exact same there 10 minutes after I did so if he happened to get the same chap then he'll iether have been delighted or more likely wondered just why 2 people wanted to go to Gravesend on a cold snowy Saturday!

The reason, had he wanted to know was that this, for some of us anyway was the start point for a Gravesend to gravesend circular trip, via HS1 and for me at least knocking a good chunk of required track on the head whilst providing a quick fix for my HS addiction. Only 2 things id say here that is on the ticket we used about which Il write later we had to change at Ebsfleat and were unsure about opening the barriers but the opperative let us through the first set and the 2nd lot worked fine. Off and runnimg om the main run of the day having collected a good number of forum members in addition to the Gravesend 3, nameyly Me, Starmill and Yorkie and here comes the 2ndthing with tickets, if in a group or solo at least 1 should book online through SET's website and get an itinarry as this was, after some head scratching what made the OBM accept them, having said in a generally unconcerned manner that we were going the long way round! I and indeed everyone I think enjoyed this run a lot and I would gladly do it again and might well do later in the year. 2hrs or so later we all baled at Gravesend with the acception of a few that didnt want to join in the fun of the Gravesend Tillbry FerryC2C moves after. I and a number of others headed on a 5 min walk to the peer and borded streight away. Its 3 quid for a return on this service which seams popular but very much run on a shoestring and perhaps a little unloved. Its certainly a long time since I had an old style Wayfarer issued ticket, once so common!

At the otherside the group split, some wating for the bus to Tilbry town from what still appears in the system as Tilbry riverside and if bought correctly can be covered by a rail ticket. I noticed later that the bus departures are in fact announced at the rail station. You do get a grand (if thats the word) tour of Tilbry, just as well as Im unliekely to return as part of this and after just missing 1 train we got eh next one at 16:27 with the others joining us at a couple of points having done a combination of walking and training as they chose. All off at Limehouse for a DLR bash accept for forum member LRD who was off home and baled at West Ham. The rest of us which was now me, Yorkie, Starmill, BB21 and OxtedL did the DLR to Stratford via Canary Warf then Woolwich via Stratford International, as you do! Starmill then had the mad idea of taking a bus to Welling Station which if Im honest I didnt enjoy with the acception that it made for the days most unusual shack score, the others of course being Uxbridge LU, Ebsfleet Int, Tilbry Riverside/Town and later in the evening Gants Hill LU. It did however provide a bonus 465 in addition to the 1 Id got earlier from CHX and I appreciated this a lot. The 1 in the morning incidentally had been made 2020 compliant, my first such Networker. Starmill and Yorkie had gone ahead chasing a connection at STP and on arrival at Victoria LU the rest of us split and I now headed for the Park Hotell Illford, my now long overdue bashers rest, reached by Victoria and Central Lines and then a cab curtacy of Mayflower whos office is just outside Gants Hill. In the room by 20:45 and warming up with Dads Army on the telly and later my book, plus a delicous Chicken Shish Kebab and Onion rings curtacy of Salamis Kebab and Pizza House who delivered within 35 minutes. I would have given this hotel full marks as it met my needs despite warnings of bad beds from Techniquest who previously has used it but I was far from amused when the hoovering, collecting of dirty cups and rubbish and such started at just before 07:30 on Sunday, wakening this tired basher! Will post this now as its been a fabby outing and nothing interesting now awates accept a day in norm land and a coach journey. Cheers for reading and thanks to Yorkie for his orgonisation of yesturday, Im also glad to have finished the Pic at last!

Despite already knowing the grim news, it's still awful to hear. Having never been in that situation, I'm no expert as a result but always happy to listen and try to help.

Sounds like it was entertaining on the NX run south, and the forum meet sounds like it was most enjoyable. I haven't been on a 395 in a long time and we really must look to do some on that week in June! Just a St Pancras to Ashford and back run suits me but we'll play it by ear.

Hope your NormLand activities are enjoyable, and that the coach north isn't too bad! Shame about the early wakeup in the hotel, in terms of beds perhaps I was just unfortunate!

Iv a good mind to dedicate a morning to simply just wizzing up and down to Shfrod from Stratford. After all, I need my fix!

Thanks due to Lord Quest of Herefordshire as I decided at short notice to extend my Norm Land activities somewhat.
With his help I cobbled together a somewhat obscure return journey to Scotland involving LM, Chilton an VTWC advances and a 2hr fester in Birmingham. Slight withering when discovering last train of the night was a vommiter all the way home from Crewe but it had to be done!

Thanks also due to another forum member who woant be named without his permission but as a result Im going AGA loco bashing next Friday and in fact many moves on this particular jornt will be loco hauled so bit of a big one from that point of view.

The Lowlanders have been pretty solid 92's for the past see while so you should be in luck there. If not on the main run at least on the Carstairs-Edinburgh leg.

Sorry to hear about the marriage going South, hurts like a b***h tbh but man has evolved to deal with pain effectively. And we're all here for you if need be. Chin up lad!

The possible saving grace from the afformentioned vommiter run mentioned above was arriving 10 up at Waverley and being treated to the 92 shunting the sleaper stock around the P7/11 roads. Also a brace of HSTs over on 2/19 and a light engine 68 thrashing through 20 and all in 5 minutes.

A 92 for part of the run would be nice but I have a feeling Il be wanting to get home by then so electrical 92 problems in the Northwest woant be appreciated that night so an 90 or summit would be good.

Many thanks for your support, appreciate that a lot.

Excellent report as ever, look forward to seeing you next week i believe we are on the same trains both to and from Norwich.

I have done a couple of runs in the last few months behind a 92 and not had any issues in the north West, although i know they haven't been 100% reliable.

We are indeed Sir.

If youve jinksed my 92 haulage then you woant be popular!

TBH Id quite like a 90 as with the MK5s due next year I think this may well be one of my last sleaper runs as use it so little these days.

Id also like a final run in a Berth (im on the seats next week) and for that run to be FTW EUS but I somehow doubt Il find the money.

Loved the Lord Quest of Herefordshire comment! I'm still impressed with how little it cost to get you that far at such short notice!

Well jealous of the loco haulage fest you've got going on soon. As for a morning of going up and down from Stratford to Ashford and back, I'm more than keen on that. A few hours spent hunting required 395s on AC power and at all full thrash? Sign me up!

23-24 Feb2017: A bit late to the party? Yes most likely as the overwhelming number of interested persons on the forum have done it already but with the future of both Anglian loco hauled sets only certain til March it was decided a while back that some forum members would take a little trip down that way and whilst the popular thing to do would have been to wate a bit till more could attend and potentially make it a Weekend it was decided that a Bash now or for ever hold your piece atitude would be adopted and the excurtion would go ahead on a weekday when the chance of both wrakes being in service was higher and also to do it as soon as, given that the 170 that had accident dammage cant be long away now and the 37 set has always been a tad precarious in as much as they review it more regularly than other such opperations on the likes of Northern and Scotrail and its well known the 68s will be gone once more DMUs are back in traffic. There is however a part of me that wonders if when one of the LHCs goes if it will be the more modern and powerful 68s that stay in the far distant East which would of course be sad for the 37 fans but opperationally might make more sense? Discuss if desired.

Had I been in a position to plan ahead, and I mean well ahead for this trip then chances are I'd have undertaken the huuuuuuuuuuuge distance to the East of England by air. As it was the whole thing was a bit lastminute.com and things on the day were further complicated by Storm Dorris. It had blown and rained here for the previous 48hrs and I'll admit to thinking that would be it for my bit of the universe but was still prepared for a somewhat disrupted run Londonwards. My booked train was TPE's 12:12, changing at Carlisle into VT's 12:40x Glasgow, the WCML having yet again won the price war! I had intended leaving a bit earlier to pad for disruption but made the mistake of dropping off again after the alarm. I was however at Waverley, reached via a lunch move in Sainsburys at 11:30 to find both main lines bustituted. Predictably the 2 common areas, namely Lockerbie on the West and Reston to Berwick on the East had flooded and whilst efforts were being made to get things moving it hadnt yet happened. I asked the info desk as to whether I should divert off my intended route and he said that once the water was sorted the WCML was more likely to not be such a victim of the storm. With this advice I headed up towards Market Street for the RRB to Carlisle but along with many others was checked just around the P8/9 stairs. It seamed that word had gone out that trains would shortly depart so no further coaches were being loaded.

By this time it was going on 12 Noon and it was noted, thanks to a punter near me that the stock for the TPE service was sitting on P14. I was also aware that the 390 for the 10:51 Euston via Birmingham was already loaded on P9 so was simply a case of seeing what left first. It turned out that the much faster Pendo would be given prioritty, well done Edinburgh Signaling Centre and with the train very full we set off at about 10 past 12. Usual run to Carstairs and with the affected stretch still a good few miles away our driver simply got on with it and thrashed her hard, easing off a fare bit at Lammington and then later through much of Dumfries and Galloway but once the admittedly soggy patch had been past it was once again business as usual and by Gretna JN we were going Ton up and accelerating, I assume to get out of the way of the GSW service which was by the looks of it hot on our heals. The amazing TM Keith had advised all those with connections to anywhere South of Carlisle to remain on the train to Preston where it would today terminate so I settled down to enjoy a good old Pendo run, quite a contrast to my last trip on this line which involved a faulty voyager, yuck. It was noted that the wind was strong but for now at least all seamed well.

This all changed when we reached Lancaster at 20 past 2 and after being sat there for a while were informed that it could potentially be quite a long while longer. The roof of Preston station had given way to the weather and was starting to fall in and now only 2 platforms were available for electric and other long distance service. This of course ment there was a fast building cue of trains behind us and also a stack of Northbound ones trying to get through from the South. The 12:12 TPE xWaverley came and finally went and at about 10 past 4 we were told that this train was to be turned round and would return to Glasgow and that pax should join the train on P5. This turned out to be the 12:51x EDB, formed today of a sardeen condition 221 vice Pendo. I managed to find a nice corner under an Air Conditioner in the shop which put me and other near me in pol position when the Loveley Hayley started dishing out the free cuppas! During this time the train I had arrived on left again for the North and its place was taken by the 12:40x Glasgow. I didnt make the effort to force myself off and catch it though as it was announced to be terminating at Preston which was still trying to keep things moving and where structural engineers were on site assessing dammage. At about quarter to 5, bare in mind I should have been passing Milton Keynes by now, an announcement was made that a fast Euston would shortly depart the adjasent platform. I got off, but as no train was in yet positioned myself between the 2 trains. The cheery guy on the station PA then said that the vommiter would be for Euston, but I opted not to get back on as it was v crouded and I was sure it would go via the Midlands which I believe it did. It was suggested that at 17:25 we would get a Euston direct and whilst that then changed to Preston only I did bord what turned out to be the 13:40 from GLC which left at 17:34 with the TM convinced we would be all stops to Crewe and then non stop to London. Having changed Crew at Preston and got away again in under 3 minutes and with the worst of the storm gone we headed on a very brisk run indeed down to Crewe where many borded and we left just around 7 with the TM giving an arrival time of 25 past 8, a tad optimistic as by the looks of it we were the first X Scotland down the trent valley since the fallen wires, garden furnature, trees, plastic bags etc had been removed and somewhat predictably we lost time with NRE/RTT saying 20:44 then later 20:55 into London.

This presented a problem. I had been ment to go to the London forum meal in Stratford before joining the 21:38 Norwich service with Yorky and Robeech. I was now faced with the almost undoable task of reaching Liverpool Street by 21:30 through a very crouded Euston station and an underground station already crouded by escalater works and which like many in Z1 had closed earlier in the day due to overcrouding. To make it all that little bit more interesting I didnt have my ticket for Norwich, this being held by the group mentioned above. Well I gave it my best, enlisting help of LU staff to speed things along and cheered ever so slightly by the news the inbound was rather late and the others had intersepted it at Stratford so at least my ticket was a tad nearer. I remember looking at the time as doors opened on the S Stock Id borded at Moorgate (grycers tip, the access stairs from the Northern to the interchange escalaters are narrower than normal just now due to refurb work on the station) and thinking there was not a hope. I wasnt however expecting Mojo to be hanging around by the LU entrance and whilst we shot across the concourse he informed me the train was still in and in fact it was another 2 minutes before dispatch took place. I doubt Il ever do an interchange like that again or if I do then it will be noteworthy. Thank god we were in First (hardly dearer than standard) and I was able to relax, aided by a whisky later on and despite being 29 down we did reach Norwich just before Midnight, meaning I could count it as a shack score for Thursday to add to the new track from Stratford onwards. Taxi to hotel reached at 25 past Midnight, meaning the whole thing had taken me 14hrs door to door! i just about had the energy to put things on charge before falling into bed!

To be continued.

Sign me up!

I have a plan for this!

Given the above, are you still envyouse? Im quite impressed I only needed 1 drink after all that!

Sounded like a nasty trip towards Norwich due to that storm (but on the bright side you should get some money back for it from Virgin).

Hopefully the locos were out in force on the Friday

Friday was indeed very enjoyable with the only non loco hauled trains being a 92 stock and 2009 stock LU transfer from LST to EUS. Now thats gotta figure as quite rare in these days of nasty things like Vommiters/170s/other (often unsuitable) DMU's/EMU's.

My accommodation for the night was the Lansden Hotel and conference centre. It gets a hard time on review sites and like many hotels at 46 quid a night is a bit rough round the edges. It does however have a quirky gated lift with metal swing doors on each landing, does a truly amazing breakfast which to someone who hardly ate the day before was an indescribable luxury and most important train buffs are most welcome and given the the breakfast waiter is an X norwich Guard with years of service behind him including the last few in the booking office, the receptionists Husband works at Crown point and another member of staffs partner is a stuard for AGA is hardly a surprise. I'll be using again if in the area and a full review can be found on the accommodation thread. I had ment to reset the alarm for a bit later but when it roused me at half 6 as usual I got up, put on the kettle and took my coffee and rather nice free bickies back to bed and spent an hour or so thanking Virgin and various others for the day before which I felt had been handled very well and with great proffessionalism. I know many others on here and elsewhere dont agree but I have no complaints and in fact much praise. After a shower, shave an general sortout of the bag I headed down for that fantastic breaky at around half 8 and about an hour later was on the concourse of Norwich station, listening to the music of firstly the 68s then later 37s idling. Rob was next to turn up and we took a lazy strol down to the front and bagged a table on which we were joined shortly after by Yorkie and finally, just a minute before departure by Transportphoto who had been delayed getting to the station.

Worth pointing out that all guards and other staff were v friendly and all drivers good performers with thrash a plenty.

First run out was a Great Yarmouth and back, we changed ends at Yarmouth but as the sound effects were not as good from the break we didnt bother afterwards. Caffeen sauced at Norwich before 37419 and 423 took us on another round trip. The plan had been to hop off part way back and use a taxi to reach Cantly for a pub lunch and later connection toward Lowestoft but as no taxis wanted the work we returned to Norwich and ate in the truly excillent Morrisons Cafay instead, before taking the 37s all the way to Lowestoft and back to Brundle for a connection onto the 2nd (68 hauled) set, complete with the luxury of working saloon doors! I failed to write down which 68s were out so any jen would be good. On the way back from Yarmouth we seperated with everyone else piling off at Brundle for a final 37 run but as it was only a plus 8 onto the 19:00 London service I decided that a timely departure on the long journey to Scotland was more important so spent 50 minutes dozing/fiddling with my phone in the waiting room at Norwich instead.

As it happened I woukd have been fine as the 37 duo arrived back 3 up and only a minute after the DVT on the Electra had snorted to a hault on the late running LST terminater. Transport photo rushed passed me saying cheery-o and the rest of us walked the entire length of the MK3 wrake to where the 90 was clicking away nicely and borded the front First Class coach for a relaxing run to London. I must say the AGA MK3s do seam nice in Standard and First is excillent and as for the 90 well whats there to say? It was certainly very vocal. Complimentary hot chock and bickies enjoyed on this stretch and a good chillout after a nice day covering 2 new lines and 3 shacks. 12 down at LST and at the tube ticket hall Yorkie and I left Rob and headed for the Central Line to Oxford Circus where the Victoria took us on to Euston and Kings Cross respectively. I bought a decaf coffee at Euston and settled down to wate for the Lowland sleaper to bord. Quite a few in the Edinburgh seats and anoyingly no buffet due to a fault, this exasibated by a further one with the heating later in the trip meaning it was a very cold and weary basher who arrived on time at Waverleys P8 and headed homewards through the wind and rain, thankful that Id left both heating and hot water switched on. Thankful also that both 92s had worked propperly, no mean feat on this service. Thanks to all who orgonised and participated, these little things mean a lot just now!

An incredible time in Anglia, clearly, once you got there and I have no idea how you managed that connection to Liverpool Street but congratulations on doing it!

The hotel sounds worth a try, especially with former railway crew running the place!

Didn't envy you on your hugely delayed run down the WCML mind, my heavily delayed run was bad enough and you made it to London not long before I got to Manchester!
