hi folks,

I did see there was a thread on getting to Budapest didn't want to take over that as a slightly different query. I'm on a stag do in Budapest week on Saturday. I'm hoping for a quick bash/spot for a few hours on the Monday, if I've recovered from the weekend !!

Does anyone have any tips for tickets, ie is there a rover ticket available in the local area. Any stations you can bash locos in between ,over a short distance ?

If not where are the best stations to go spotting locos?

And more importantly anyone recommend any decent ale bars !:o
Any help much appreciated..

Don't miss the facade of Keleti Pu (one of the main stations), statues of James Watt and George Stephenson.

Pointer Pub chain is good for cheap beer, there are 5 of them, they're quite english. There are also a number of Irish pubs, but I'd only recommend Jack Doyle's and Beckett's. Another english pub is John Bull which isn't bad and I'd also recommend Fregatt

also, don't miss M1 metro line. One of the first in the world, after London, Istanbul & New York

Great city visited for the third or fourth time last Autumn. Lots of transport interest as mentioned. Line M4 only opened last year and is a complete contrast to the narrow bodied line M1.

See the attached link for fare prices, the 24/72 hour travel cards are good value, don't purchase the Budapest Card unless you want the extra touristy stuff.

Can be purchased from machines as well as ticket offices and the airport. But beware of some of the unsavoury characters that hang around some of the touristy stations and ticket machines.

Enjoy

Airport line itself has plenty of loco hauled trains which you can do between airport and Nyugati, two-three intermediate stops. Weekdays nearly everything is hauled, on weekends some of the stopping trains are Flirt carts however. Its probably the easiest place to have a play on trains, there are 2-4tph with push/pull electrics going out of the high numbered platforms via Zuglo plus a few semi-fasts which you are valid on. Just watch out for the Debrecen ICs which are only formed of aircon coaches - these are compulsory res.

Out of Deli its easy to spin around on engines to/from Kelenfold. Keleti isn't as easy for haulage but has loads of hauled trains and worth a look if you have time.

Plenty MAV phots here, many in and around Budapest. https://87015aewn.wordpress.com/category/euro-nedding/hungary/

Its a great city, you can't really go wrong for trains or beer!

Wonderful city. Can recommend the Children's Railway if only for the curiosity value

For Hungarian craft beer, i'd recommend Eleszto off tuzolto utca near Corvin-negyed on line M3 , Lehuto on hollo utca in the centre or Szimpla Kert on Kazincsky Utca, also in the central area.

Hopfanatic on Hunyadi ter near vorosmarty utca (M1) had some great beers last year but it may be shut down?

Pivo on the back streets near Nyugati station has some good beers too, but as you might expect from the name they are Czech beers rather than Hungarian.

Enjoy, it's a great city :)

Note that Deli Station is presently closed for engineering work. Some trains that were to have started there are cancelled , others are starting from Keleti or Kelenfold.

Definitely the 'childrens railway'. A fascinating bit of history of the Communist version of the Hitler Youth. They were trained to run essential services such as railways in the event of war with the west.

BTW M2 & M3 (at least in the centre) are a nuclear bunker complex. Same goes for Prague, Kiev, Erevan & Bucharest (although the latter is very dodgy)

Thanks for all the advice folks. Saw quite a few trains and lots of fantastic looking trams. Went to some fantastic bars, ended up in a micro brewery in the city centre.

Glad you enjoyed it. May I ask, what was the micro brewery in Budapest called? I'm going back in August, if it's a new one i'd like to try it :)
