Could anyone tell me if Burton to alfreton is valid via chesterfield? i need to get to Alfreton tomorrow and all journeys shown on Trainline app go via Nottingham, and the 1st arrival at Alfreton is 13.34, but i can get there earlier via Chesterfield, would i need to pay extra to go that way? thanks in advance.

Burton: Derby, LTV, Notts, Tamworth
Alfreton: Chesterfield, Derby, Loughbourough, Notts.

Since they share a routeing point only the shortest route (+3 miles) or a direct train is valid. I doubt it's valid especially since NRES suggests you need more than one ticket when specifying via Chesterfield

edit: Eagle shows it is valid below :)

Burton and Alfreton share routeing points (Derby and Nottingham) so the shortest route in length is valid, plus or minus three miles.

Via Nottingham is 45 mi 16 ch.

Via Chesterfield is 45 mi 25 ch.

Therefore I suggest that the route via Chesterfield is valid on an Any Permitted ticket.

I don't know the answer to your question on validity, but if you're prepared to go via Chesterfield both ways then you can do the whole trip significantly cheaper by buying a Derbyshire Wayfarer, which is valid from Burton to Chesterfield (in fact all the way to Sheffield) and from Chesterfield to Alfreton and costs £10.50, compared to the BUT-ALF day return at £17.10. However it isn't valid via Nottingham (it doesn't cover the bit between Langley Mill and Long Eaton).

You can't buy these online or from ticket machines but they're available from the ticket office at Burton (assuming it's open on Sunday mornings).

There's a bus every half hour from Derby Corporation Street to Alfreton starting at 0925 and taking about 50 minutes.

Is that any help?

I think it's £5 for an all day ticket

Wayfarer would also cover that bus (and you're still in pocket compared to a bus ticket plus BUT-DBY return), so you could go one way by train via Chesterfield and the other way by bus if that works out better.

Also note that the bus stop on Corporation street is about ten mins or so walk from Derby station (or get a bus from the rail to the bus station).

No it doesn't (unless the train is exceptionally diverted via Toton). Nottingham to Sheffield trains turn off the line to Derby/Leicester at Lenton Junction, just west of Nottingham.
Agreed. I have deleted the earlier post.

I thought that some of the Nottingham - Attenborough Jn - Toton - Alfreton trains called at Beeston. They don't!

Eagle has demonstrated above that Burton - Alfreton via Chesterfield is not more than 3 miles longer than the shortest route. It is therefore a Permitted Route.
