One problem that no one has mentioned is that extra trains either through the Hope Valley or Buxton are going to hit the bottleneck of Stockport?!

The Midland used to run via Guide Bridge, Hyde and Romiley to pick up the route via Millers Dale at Chinley, it didn't hit Stockport at any point - this was before the line through Bredbury was built.

The later expresses such as The Palatine and Midland Pullman used to run from Central and Cheadle Heath, via what is now the freight only line from Navigation Road to Hazel Grove High Level Junction (pre-Hazel Grove chord). These then went through Disley Tunnel and New Mills South Junction towards Chinley.

Hope Valley expresses only started to run via Stockport in 1986 when the Hazel Grove chord was built, until then they all went via Romiley. AFAIK Buxton services always went that way.

It seems that the year 1840 (mentioned specifically in two of these articles) seems to be a definate date. There must be a method of establishing which Acts of Parliament were placed upon the statute book at that time.

Are you referring to LNWR Buxton services or Midland Buxton services, and don't forget Stockport Tiviot Dale where the M60 now runs.

I don't think the Midland ever ran through services into Buxton, they just called at Millers Dale where a shuttle ran into Buxton (Midland). LNWR Buxton services always went via Edgeley and Hazel Grove.

I don't know much about Stockport Tiviot Dale, other than it was a stop between St Pancras and Liverpool Central; the lines around Manchester at the time are mind boggling and it's taken me a while to get this far

I am sure that Manchester Central station had something to do with services to Stockport Tiviot Dale station.

You make it sound like a small station, when it most certainly was not. Many forum members will view your assumption of this station as being a stop on the St. Pancras to Liverpool Central route as totally ignoring the routes outward from Manchester Central station to many places that passed through this station.

Would any forum members like to develop my posting in order to assist Lampshade in his knowledge of this area.

Here's a few photo's I took of Manchester Central in early 1981. It was actually a mirror image of St Pancras minus the hotel. It has to be admitted though that it was understandable BR were keen to get rid of if only to save on maintaining it.

I'm not suggesting that at all, I'm just pointing out that my knowledge of Tiviot Dale is somewhat limited :|

The Midland route had direct trains from Manchester to Buxton.
About 5 or 6 a day. I have been checking some books from "Scenes from the Past" series published by Foxline.
"Stockport ISBN 1-870119-00-2"
"Buxton ISBN 1-870119-01-0"
"Railway from Buxton ISBN 1-870119-06-1"
"Midland Route from Manchester Part one ISBN1-870119-20-7"
the Railway from Buxton book has a time table from 1957.

These two sites are worth a look:-

http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/b/buxton/index.shtml

and there are some images from the Foxline books.

The problem here is that there are not two established routes which provide cross-Pennine services as do the Calder Valley line and the Huddersfield line to the north of this area that serve West Yorkshire.

The Hope Valley route has many problems, some of which are revealed in the letter in the "thumbnail" sketch in the posting prior to this one. Cross Pennine rail links were cut with the closing of the Woodhead tunnel. Does anyone remember the justification given by the Transport Minister at that time?

I would like to hear what dggar has to report from the meeting on 25th May at Buxton.

The report is now available,
