The title says it all really, says on Direct.gov.uk that a birth cert works, but if someone goes to the desk at Newcastle with one, will they be sold a RC or given a load of excuses?

The railcard site says that at a station your birth certificate is acceptable

There is a 10% off online offer at the moment - but you do need passport or DL online

I was never asked for any proof of age when purchasing my first railcard at Bristol Temple Meads in 2008. Once you have the photocard, then no more ID is required for each subsequent renewal.

I provided my birth certificate only at Potters Bar and the guy said 'oh you don't need that I can see you're not lying' :D - then again Potters Bar seem to be the friendliest ticket office at least by FCC standards :)

A birth certificate is fine for station issued Railcards. What isn't acceptable is a marriage certificate (with a different surname name on it) which I got offered as proof of age yesterday.

Don't they write your DOB on the rail card anymore? Someone who is obviously under 18 may not need to prove their age but don't they need their DOB recorded to prevent them in the future renewing when they are 26?

I think it's written on the photocard.
