Buying a travelcard how far into the future?

I wanted to buy an annual travelcard before the end of the year, however I will be out of the UK for a few weeks in December.

If i went to a London Overground ticket office and asked for one, would i be able to get one to start at the start of January? How far ahead can i push the start date?

I don't know about paper travelcards, but using Oyster online I can order travelcards to start on November 8th today, so it looks like a month in advance.

I should be clear that its a travelcard onto an oyster.

In that case just order it online, you don't need to go to a ticket office.

What about the gold card? How would i get that?
