Looking back through the thread I think that means all (601-612) except 720608 have been used in passenger service. Is that correct ?.

I doubt that, the 387s were only ever going to be temporary and were intended to be kept clean and tidy for use with a new operator. The 720s, as far as I'm aware, are permanent. It's just a question of if they still want to keep the mileage down to 'keep them nice' or to reduce the impact of faults while the miles per defect improves.

If they are permanent why have they got GA seat moquette?

They haven't, it's pink not red. It's just the same pattern. Why spend extra money on something when you don't need to?
The seating layout is different from the GA units, which is not something that was true of the 387s Vs their GTR counterparts. The c2c units have 2+2 in the outer parts of each vehicle, meaning you can actually walk through to the next carriage without bashing your shoulders.

Despite the reliability issues, firmer seats and the questionable fit and finish quality, I actually really like travelling on 720s, they're a substantial step up from the 357s. It's amazing what difference a carpeted floor can have for noise, plus the quieter traction package, lack of bang from the VCB or the sometimes quite intense buzzing you got from the auxiliary inverters on Electrostars make them a much more peaceful unit to travel on. If it weren't for the lightweight bogie rattle and the ground rail noise that every line in the UK suffers from, they'd be positively tranquil. Now all they need to do is utilise them to bolster the timetable so that I actually get a seat! :D

Originally they were to be identical as c2c got a good price due to them being a continuation of the same spec and same production lines. At some point though, management changed their mind about a few things and the cost increased as a result.

Correct me if I'm wrong - isn't there supposed to be a powered bogie on the driving cars of 720s? If so, 611 already has a set of traction motors isolated!

Only one of the driving cars, the other is an unpowered trailer AFAIK (DTSLW). Was this the carriage with the accessible loo? If so, that’d explain it.

Whats the purpose of the 5P96-99 runs between Shoeburyness and London? Are these meant to be 720 runs?

Any particular reason why there's only two services in the PM peak? Must admit I thought they'd mostly replace 12 carriage 357 services.

Such a waste of twelve capactious, expensive units. It infuriates me.

I notice there is a distinct sound difference when powering away between the 710 and 345 rolling stock vs the 701 and 720s. Always wondered why that was the case, is it due to the motor formations or different traction packages are used??

The 720 and 701s seem to make this distint high pitch whine that continues for a while as the unit builds up speed where as the 345 and 710s initially do this but then at about 10 to 15mph that fades in to a lower pitch growl.

around 0:08 here the whine changes to a lower pitch gain.

Vs

which the whine seems to continue much longer

Only 345s are different. 710s are broadly the same as 701/720/730s. I suspect it's the same traction package but the frequency curves were changed. Normally that's done for interference prevention reasons.

Ah that would make sense. After all the motors and bogies are same packages.

Has 720608 still not yet entered service? If it has, can anyone supply first day, please? Many thanks

Maybe the clue is in the Ockenden workings at weekends. The 5car 24m sets are similar length to 6car 357. Perhaps they are more efficient at shoulder peak working as single units where a 4car would be insufficient, but 8car is overkill.

If that's true though, why are they not being utilised as such in a timetable change?

The 357's are 4-car sets. for the weekend Ockenden services, the number of passengers from Chafford100 for Lakeside shopping 8-car 357 are really needed. It's a single line, so limited scope for increased frequency.
