Me and a mate are planning on doing the round robin thing.

Chester-Blaenau ffestiniog-Porthmadog, no stopping in any town on the way there.

But on the way back, can anyone recomend a cool town to spend 2 hours in till the next train comes, between Porthmadog and Welshpool.
i know there is a nice chippy in Newtown, lol.

I agree. You can do worse than Machynlleth - the town is not toof ar from the station either.

Yes, as others have said Machynlleth is a good place to rest awhile! Depending on the time of day you are there you have the choice of various eateries from the cafe on the station itself (very good) to a sandwich shop near the clock tower (not tried it). There are 2 or 3 cafes on Heol Maengwyn. All on the left as you walk away from the clock towards Newtown. Traditional fare, soup and roll, pie and mash that sort of thing although one of them is vegetarian. (not tried any of those either.) There is a kebab shop and also a chippy where you can eat in. (this is on the right almost opposite Spar and the kebab shop. Best chippy of all is Hennagens but that is also the furthest walk from the station. A few pubs too. Best of the lot are The Skinners (between the station and the clock) and the White Lion (on the right just past the clock). Both of these do food too but a little more expensive.
Enjoy.

Shame you said no to the coast, there is a lovely fish and chip shop in Aberdovey. Nice views across the estuary towards Ynyslas and Borth, and it's nice to walk along the beach a little in the sea air.

Or, if you're feeling energetic, get off at Tywyn and walk along the beach to Aberdovey!

Barmouth is very nice. You could go to the beach. There is a chippy across the road from the railway line on the inland side after the crossing. There are plenty of cafes and pubs in town (and also a big co-op next to station).

After your lunch you can walk through town, then across Barmouth Bridge, and re-join the next train at Morfa Mawddach.

The reason I wanted to get on the Aber-Shrews line really quick was because I think the last 2 trains from pwllheli terminate at Machynlleth after a certain time.

Yes the last 2 trains (the 2nd one only running on Friday) have no connections. But the last train from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury has a connecting service from Coast Line.

The Powysland Museum in Welshpool is excellent (next to the canal lock near the station). Nice shops up the hill, good views from the top with the Welshpool & Llanfair terminus just beyond. The Old Station has a good cafe and railway model shop.

Welshpool is def a good option. Check our Powis Castle with spectacular views and fantastic architecture. Well worth the visit.
