In my head 'North X' means it's a separate settlement, whereas 'X North' is just the most northerly station of a settlement.

For example; West Malling and East Malling stations are located in separate villages. But Maidstone West and Maidstone East are both located in the same settlement of Maidstone.

Obviously this isn't a hard and fast rule, but seems to work in most cases.

Your rule works very well on the basis that there are lots of places where N/S/E/W look like prefixes - but really they aren't, like East Grinstead (no West Grinstead :P) or North Road.

East Garforth, North Llanrwst, South Bank and Allens West are some examples that create a problem in both senses. As far as stations go, there are actually quite a lot.

At the risk of a "whoosh", there is a West Grinstead, although it is some miles distant from East Grinstead. It even had a station on the Shoreham-Christ's Hospital line: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Grinstead_railway_station

The Station is in Chesterton, why not just call in Chesterton?

Boring name, nothing fancy ;)

(Ah, it was indeed the originally proposed name, I was trying to remember.)

Continuing the tradition from HS1, plus the consistent implementation (St Pancras and St Pancras International vs Stratford and Stratford International), what about Cambridge International? ;)

It wasn't quite a rubber stamp- the use of the old network rail access track as a cycle & foot access parallel to Cowley Road is in as a condition (the plans had a 2.5m wide shared use footway along side the road with uncontrolled crossings, not suitable!)

Cambridge Parkway, because...parkway stations.

You would need to add North ready for when Cambridge South Parkway opens at Addenbrookes. Another hurdle recently cleared for this station after East/West plans moved up a gear.

Probably not a good idea having two stations that would come out as "Cambridge [blah] Parkway" on the PA and only have three letters different on departure screens.

Best stick to good plain old North & South. Anyway it's just as much an Interchange :| Just leave the fancy cr*p like For Addenbrookes Hospital or For The Science Park to the platform signs.

Must say that the construction of the station at Chesterton is making a very dull train drive a bit more interesting. Activity around the site is starting to accelerate.

Near where the above once stood
Hi.

I think we all know how the name will be decided.
There will be a big expensive council consultation over a period of months. Then at the end of it all, the boss will let his daughter give it a daft name! ;)

Is this new station on the main line North of the existing Station on the way to Ely etc?

Will the present station still remain open or will all services only use the new station?

Yes, will be built in the old Chesterton sidings and where the old St Ives line veered off

All trains will stop at both

Cambridge Parkway, because...parkway stations.

But its not a parkway as the idea of it is to make life easier for those going to the science park not to park your car and go into Cambridge by train

Whilst the planning permission for the buildings was only signed off the other week, coming through on the train today the building of the platforms is quite advanced already- sorry, no photos!

Cambridge Hawking (Science Park)
then....
Cambridge (Main) for current Cambridge station
would be my idea if it hadn't been named
People seem to have an idea of where they want to go in places
Oh. And complete the trio with Cambridge South for Kings Cross in the south

Cambridge South/Addenbrookes is a real proposed station (hopefully to be delivered as part of E-W rail)

Cambridge South? Why not call it Trumpington? That I believe is about where it will be.

I think it's most likely to be about 1km east of Trumpington, so as to be on the existing railway. This would allow London trains to call there as well as being the most likely route for East West Rail trains.
