Situation

BiL booked a Stiirling to KX 1st advance return

He is booked out on the 15.00 Kx to Stirling today

We arrived at Bracknell at 12.45 to get the 13.00 that would give him plenty of time to get across to KX he purchased a single to Waterloo

The trsin was delayed due to level crossing problems!! and looking at open train times it looked like he would not have enough time to connect at KX

I drove him to Slough where he got the 13.50 to Pad which should get him to KX in time ( via the H+C) Where he bought another ticket to Pad

Now the question

As i type the 13.00 Bracknell train is down 64mins and stuck at Sunningdale behind several earlier services so IF he had stayed on it i would guess he could claim

However as we used a bit of common and in order for him not to pay an additional 142.00 for a single on the 15.27 or later from KX can he reclaim the Bracknell to Waterloo ticket c cost or is it tough luck mate as he never travelled? Any advice on procedure welcomed

Thanks

So in this situation, had you decided to wait for the bracknell train, and therefore got a later train from King's Cross, the ticket for the 15:00 would have been valid on whatever train you ended up getting from King X, since if you're delayed in a previous part of the journey due to train issues, you are always entitled to take the next train for the route you have booked, even when you are on an advance ticket. So in the future, you can just wait for the delayed train, then take a later train from King X at no additional cost, and then claim delay repay from SWR since they caused your delay.

Since you chose to drive to Slough and purchase a new ticket, you are able to obtain a refund for your Bracknell to London ticket (if one was bought) since you chose not to do this journey due to delays, you should claim this through an incomplete journey refund from wherever you bought the ticket (whatever website or app, or if from a TVM, go to a ticket office from the relevant TOC). However, when you then did the journey from Slough to Stirling, no delays were encountered, and you go to Stirling on time, so you won't be able to claim delay repay.

Let me know if anything needs clearing up, as it can get quite confusing

He can get a full refund of the Bracknell ticket, from the original retailer. No admin fee should be charged as it was unused due to service disruption. Had he travelled and been delayed getting yo Kings Cross, he would not have been required to buy a new ticket by LNER as long as sufficient time had been allowed to get to Kings Cross.
