As far as I know they work anywhere provided the product loaded onto it is valid in that area. For example I regularly scan season tickets loaded onto London North Western Railway, Abellio and Northern ITSO cards well outside the operators area.

I assume its the same for SWR cards, as long as the card has a valid product loaded (for example a season ticket that covers the journey being made) then it would work just fine.

Happy to be corrected if the SWR card is different in some way - its well out of my area!

Late response here, but I would be very interested in your experiences booking tickets to load onto your SWR card. I'm slowly exploring the possibilities myself.

First issue was that the National Rail interactive map that they link to seemed to be seriously out of date -not even covering all the SWR stations where Smartcard ticketing works.

Second is that the range of tickets seems to be limited. Evening Out Singles and returns are not supported.

Railcard discount tickets seem OK. One day Travelcards are too (the reason why I got a Smartcard - to avoid paper ticket failures at TfL gatelines).

I successfully got offered tickets from Basingstoke to Brighton so that covers a journey including SWR and GTR. But previously it failed on Winchester to Didcot (SWR or CrossCountry and GWR)

Be aware that when the app offers you "ticket choice" it will often just say "e-ticket". Tap that and you are likely to be offered a Smartcard version as well as an e-ticket on a phone.

I would like to hear about yours and others' experiences
