In July, a group of nine of us from the US will be taking a Baltic Cruise out of Dover. We will be arriving in Dover the day before the ship leaves. Canterbury is just a short hop from Dover and I might suggest to the group that we pop up there for walk-around and maybe dinner. How far out of the "old town" portion of Canterbury is the train station? Is it a reasonable walking distance?

Yes, the walk from Canterbury East (which is the station you'll arrive at from Dover) to the centre of the old town is about 15 - 20 mins from what I can remember. If you go via St Margaret's Street you'll pass a very good fish and chip shop outside Waterstones bookshop :)

The quickest way to the city centre is via the footbridge (straight in front of the station entrance) and then along the roman wall, which will take you straight to the city centre in 10 - 15 minutes (just outside the bus station), and is signposted all the way there! (this is from canterbury east - I used to use this station everyday when at uni, and for work as well!)

We were in Canterbury on Monday. Lovely city. Lots of places to eat and things to see. The Cathedral is impressive! We drove but Canterbury East is a little out of the centre whereas Canterbury West is only 5 minutes walking distance from the main shopping street.

Thanks for the great info. We've been to Great Britain many times, but mostly in the north where we have good friends. Since we were going to be in Dover, I thought it would be a great opportunity to see Canterbury for the first time. I don't mean to slight Dover (we will see some of it), but Caterbury is a special place.

Canterbury East is closer to the main part of the city though:), true the west station is closer to the main street but that's at the other end of it where there aren't really that many good shops!

Indeed, with regards to Dover I can certainly recommend a visit to the castle and the tunnels underneath.

Apart from the Castle, I don't think there's anything in Dover to keep you there too long. It is somewhat the a*** end of Kent, as Bill Bryson has recounted! I would very strongly agree with visiting Canterbury.

Just to clarigy that if u travel by train from Dover you will travel from Dover Priory station which is located on Folkestone Road to Canterbury East
You may get a fast or slow train
If its a slow train you will stop in some of the villages between including
Kearsney
Shepherds Well
Snowdown (former mining village)
Aylesham ( dump)
Adisham
and Bekesbourne
some of the countryside is rather pretty especially as you come up through the lydden area

Grrr <( (I'm temped to throw something at you for that comment, no offence, but then again I'm technically from Folkestone, so I don't really care :P, which is probably a lot worse!)

Seriously though the station looks better than it used to for the record, it has new seating, a new shelter, and as for the village its self, a couple of new shops have opened up and it has a recently built new health centre and there are plans to build a lot more houses in the village (with more shops as well)

Thanks. I think most all of the group is excited about visiting Canterbury. Being an Episcopalian (the US branch of the Anglican Church), I'm really looking forward to seeing Canterbury Cathedral
