21 years ago, give or take a couple of days, the first ever episode of Channel 4's new sitcom aired. Since then, it's become known for being one of the greatest TV comedies of all time, and one of the most consistently funny. Its name? Father Ted.

So what do members here think of Father Ted? Do they like it, do they not? What are their favourite episodes/quotes? Anything else related to Ted, Dougal, Fr. Jack and Mrs Doyle? Feel free to post it here.

Thanks to Father Ted I can't walk past a lingerie section and not think about how it compares to Ireland's biggest lingerie section

For those who've never seen it, here's a brief synopsis:

Father Ted Crilly (Dermot Morgan) has been banished to a remote, wind-battered island off Ireland's west coast due to an incident never fully hear about ("the money was just resting in my account!"). Forced to live in the island's parochial house along with Father Dougal McGuire (Ardal O' Hanlon), a young and naive priest who's not the sharpest crayon in the box, Father Jack Hackett (the late Frank Kelly), a grizzled, alcoholic elderly priest who is never sober and only ever utters four words ("Drink!" "Fe*k!" "Arse!" "Girls!"), and their eccentric, tea-obsessed housekeeper Mrs Doyle (Pauline McLynn).

Thanks for the link.

Yes 1000 - quality, not quantity :)

I like to think of mine as qualitative not quantitive too, but yours are probably more worthwhile than mine - though I started this thread, and if I've got people thinking about a classic of situation comedy, then that's good enough for me.

It's ironic that 'damn you, swear filter' wasn't itself blocked by the swear filter. :P

The fact we like the Frothmass special is amazing as we both *****ing hate Frothmass!

Also rather enjoy there antics with the raffle prize car and the number 11 will never be the same again.

My Wife says if Mrs Doil ever needs a home for a teamaster then send it on.

Wonder which TOC will introduce such a device on a trolley or self service?

It was good to see that Irish television felt that the time was right to launch this programme to bring a certain comic aspect to the state religion as this then led to the later making of the film in 2002, directed by Peter Mullen, "The Magdalen Sisters", which then brought home to Eire what happened in their homes for young women.

Has anyone seen 'The Passion Of St. Tibbulus', and is it some sort of nudy film.

And bishop how is the son, yes, how is the son of god and the world of religion :D

And shall we ring him now or shall we watch it again.

It's was a brilliant three series & one Christmas special! :D

Favourite episodes; those involving kicking Bishop Brennan up the a**e, Speed 3, and the going to America episodes.

Don't reckon myself entitled to vote: I basically don't watch television, and have only ever seen one episode of Father Ted. Am not Catholic or Irish -- but consider self not totally ignorant of either of those scenes. I have to admit to finding the episode that I saw, IMO one of the daftest and most un-funny supposed television comedy offerings, that have ever come my way -- and that's saying a lot.

Sorry to be a Scrooge !

Father Dougal: 'God, Ted, I heard about those cults. Everyone dressing in black and saying our Lord's gonna come back and judge us all!'
Father Ted: 'No... No, Dougal, that's us. That's Catholicism.'
