Hi,

Does anyone know the cause of the serious line-side fire on the WCML South between Milton Keynes Central and Watford Junction which closed all lines late afternoon into early evening on Saturday, 10th June 2023.

Many thanks.

Steve.

It was a fire outside the boundary fence at Bourne End. Emergency isolation for fire brigade to extinguish and dampen down. They requested 60mins.

I believe it was a point motor overheated and caught fire near Hemel

I’ve never experienced a point motor catch fire on it’s own. They are all protected with both fuses and either overload relay cut-outs or 7.5 second timer relays (that cut power after 7.5 seconds).

Plus, conventional point motors have clutches that will slip if the motor stalls due to an obstruction. RCPL (clamp locks) have an over pressure release valve.

Motors will catch fire if operated after maintenance staff have spraying certain types of contact cleaner from aerosol cans on the commutator…
