Passing through Cheam for the first time, I noticed the massive space between the two platforms, which isn't apparent elsewhere between Epsom and Sutton.

I'm assuming there was an island platform, was this used to overtake stoppers in the past or for terminating services?

In the last month or so several yellow paint marks have appeared on the exact centre lines of the former Cheam loops; are they putting the loops back in or something?

The re-instatement of the 'fast' lines at Cheam was mooted some time ago as a means of allowing any possible Bognor (or similar) trains to be re-introduced and overtake suburban workings. The use of the Epsom route as a diversionary one for the coast has also been discussed so it is possible that the centre roads will be re-instated.

Or it may be a Tesco's!

Is there anywhere else this could be done? It's not a huge margin for overtaking!

Tesco Express, no doubt?

NR's official information, in the relevant RUS, is completely against either reason for running trains that way, i.e. whether for normal services or diversions. They certainly haven't said anything positive about reinstatement of fast lines.

No inward paths to London , thanks to extra Metro services over the years. Loops taken out on resignallng circa 1984 , all "fast" services diverted off the Horsham road to servce the "Eldorado'" of Gatwick and East Croydon) (as locals used to say) ..

Reinstatement of fasts via Sutton and Epsom to the coast would be a very good idea. Wasn't it one of Southern's aspirations at one time?

Well, there must be a reason of some sort for those yellow markings being painted onto the ballast on the old formations mustn't there?

might be that they are really short of storage space and they see that as a potential option! sidings seem to be being re-laid in other places
