I've found a scam, using First Class single tickets
What is the cheapest First Class single fare that anyone can find?

I suspect, but have not checked, that Twickenham to St Margarets are the cheapest on SWT (and North Sheen to Twickenham?), as the Annual is the cheapest that gives you the free (First Class?) tickets from SWT. However I can't find any First fare now!

try edinburgh to haymarket ( edb to hay )
£2.20 single

according to NRES, there are no 1st class fares between twickenham and st margarets (twi to smg ) - annual 2nd class season is £256

ryde esplanade to ryde pier head annual is cheaper at £196

is this "the cheapest 1st class single priced by SWT" or is it the cheapest 1st class single anywhere on railtrack ?

Blimey a two minute journey time
trainsfares.co.uk shows that trains serving this route do not have First Class

The cheapest I can find so far is :
Edinburgh Waverley - Haymarket at £2.20 single

Within the last year, refurbishment of the 158s has led to FC on the Southampton local services.

I suspect the cheaper of these would probably be SOA-SWG as it is the shortest journey time between two stations in that area.

EDIT: at a check that is £2.70 single - for a 2-3 minute journey!!

Leeds to Wakefield Westgate always used to be about £2 too but can't check it at the exact second.

No fares being produced in Avantix, but Liverpool Lime Street to Liverpool South Parkway, (operated by London Midland & soon, TPE and EMT). offer 1st class accomodation. SDS is £2, but really couldn't see them even getting to checking tickets there in the space of 10mins.

You've almost got it there
Purchase a First Class ticket for that day, but don't use it for travelling
You can then get access to any First Class lounge for that day
It would appear FSR have caught on to this and now only allow you access once per day at each station
It is certainly much cheaper for a relaxing tea or coffee when there isn't going to be much to see for a while, along with some WiFi access for the entire day

But no trains have FC along that route do they?

They certainly did have FC, as Barry Doe and I communed about this...the FC Annual was around £280. From memory the FC would be on the Reading trains and perhaps on the 450s [still]? National Rail quotes £3.00 FC Single Twickers to Richmond or Feltham.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Soton Airport Pkway to Swaythling seems to be £2.70 FC Single?

Ah yes, had some strange feeling that 455s only did Twickers - Richmond for some reason which of course isn't true.

I wonder if they would accept that at some First Class lounges !
It doesn't say you have to be travelling to or from that stations, only that you must be hold a valid First Class ticket

I can't seem to found an Annual FC (Gold Card) for that route...does that mean that there isn't one? I have no idea why anyone would in fact want one as I gather that it's not a SWT route so you can't get the free tickets.

On that subject, I think they appear to have this unwelcoming approach (probrably for a good reason to stop random people walking in) but couldn't they just not let you in even if you had a genuine ticket because of this 'show your ticket to a camera' system, you wouldn't know if it was simply not responding to you or there was someone iside actually looking at your ticket thinking '£1.10, get lost!' and not letting you in. I wish it was a barrier like system which looked only for First class tickets rather than a camera system.

As far as I can work out, you only need one that is valid for that day and has NOT been used for travel or its at the final destination
It really will be interesting to see if I can use one for Exeter in Aberdeen
Certainly works out nice and cheap for a round of tea, biscuits, and some WiFi access whilst in the station area

Random thought: you could pay £2.20 for a free cup of tea EDB-GLQ, provided you also had this ticket. That would save you around... -70p?

I think the Exeter one would be more worthwhile

Has anyone *tried* this scam? I suspect it won't work, or a "reserve the right to refuse entry" clause will be used to stop access.

When I attempted to use my non-MML Annual Gold Card (1st Class) to access the lounge at St Pancras International, I was very nearly refused on the grounds "it's not valid at any of our stations... but I will let you in this time".

I got a grantham-leeds FC single for £9.45 with a YP railcard. IIRC the grantham-wakefield and Grantham-Leeds singles are the same price, so technically that makes Wakefield-Leeds (having changed at wakefield from Grantham) free.

How do you get a 1st class ticket with a YP?

You can't get discounted tickets, except Advance tickets on a YP.

You didn't think he got a First Day/First Open ticket from Grantham to Leeds for £9.45 as that would be amazing value!!
