An easement exists where a child season ticket of a month or longer can continue to be used up to 4 months after the holder's 16th birthday.

This is stated on the Season Tickets page of NRE, and while I will take a photocopy of it with me on my travels, are there any other sources that could be quoted (and more reliable than NRE...;))?

Not that I am aware of, but then staff should know about it, and it should be noted that the expiry date of the season ticket must be within four months of the 16th birthday.

That is entirely reliable. As long as the season ticket starts before the 16th birthday and is continuous up to (the maximum of) 4 months after the 16th birthday it will be valid at the child rate.
