On RTT there appears to be an ECS move from Wembley LMD to Bristol Barton Mill and back, under the headcodes 5C65 and 3M65. Does anyone know the purposes of these moves, perhaps as driver training?

These movements have been happening for several months, for TPWS4 fitment and ATP removal as @Slug1 mentioned. Class 168s were similarly going to Crewe for these modifications although I believe that work has now been completed.

Seemed to be 2 Chiltern units at Bristol today, so appears this work is still continuing, unless they are now coming back for something else.

Fairly sure a set of four mk4s is also at Bristol, but no idea why

Chilterns 168s will be going to Crewe, for the Forseable future as part of its upgrade programme for 168s, 168003 is there at present. Other 168s will follow, for a full refurbishment, and various other improvements ie WiFi, plug sockets, basically 168s are having a full refurbishment, but 165 are having as well as mentioned above at Bristol, a very basic spruce up, to last a few years or so until the new units arrive. As informed by a few Chiltern staff the other day. When asking out of interest.

There’s been 2 Chiltern units at Barton Hill for several weeks now (don’t know whether they’ve always been the same two, but they don’t seem to move much!)

They switch over every few weeks ish. 039 & 013 are the ones currently there, 035 & 003 have just come back.
Only 4 left to do now though, 001, 002, 030 & 036

Quick work!

Dare I say, unlike the concurrent ETCS fitments on the East Coast Main Line.

Does anybody know if 165004 going to fixed?
Is that the unit that was earmarked as a candidate for Porterbrook’s ”HybridFlex” Angel’s hybrid conversion?

No, beacsue the 165s are owned by Angel...

Whoops; yes you’re right. Especially embarrassing as I know the fleet engineer…

One two-car Turbo set, No 165004, has been out of service since 2020 for a hybrid conversion in conjunction with owner Angel Trains, electric vehicles specialist Magtec and maintenance company Loram. This work is yet to be completed.

Which new units are arriving? Are chiltern replacing the 165s?

Not, at the moment, but soon with new units to replace the 165 by around 2030, however that aside, not confirmed by any means at all, mentioned in another threads ie 175 and Mk5 possible for replacement fir some of the worst 165, but take with a pinch of salt, discussion and tender with Dft still ongoing.
However as mentioned above, 165 fully replaced around 2030 by a newer fleet, ie tenders and discussion ongoing with Prospective builders.
In due course 165, having a basic refurbishment plus Atp removal and Tpws modifications.

So an order for new Diesel trains is in the pipeline.....

Wonder if there will be bi modes, for use on services via Amersham. But this would mean having a specific fleet for that route.

What really is needed, is electrification of at least part of the route

If the new units are bi-mode they will be diesel / battery hybrid. Certainly not third rail compatible.
