The Class 22000s are newer than the 168s, which presumably improves the business case for the retrofit (longer prospective service life).
Both have long enough prospective service life to make the business case work, except one has it guaranteed the other doesn't!

The Turbostars as a whole surely have a long life ahead of them

Chiltern is unlikely to be electrified for 10/20 years, and there are plenty of older DMUs which they can replace if cascaded

168218 taking 168321 back, nothing has been done to 321 so im confused as to why it couldn't come back on its own
Possibly acting as "insurance" in case 321 were to fail en route, given it couldn't be rescued by a Pendolino, Voyager, or Desiro due to incompatible couplers (168s are fitted with BSI couplers, whereas the others all use Dellner couplers.)
